Duke Nukem Apogee Software, Ltd. 1991

Based on the same game engine as Crystal Caves, this is the very first part of Duke Nukem series. In the free shareware Episode 1: Shrapnel City, Duke fights Dr. Proton, an evil genius who created robot army to conquer the world. The second episode Mission: Moonbase, available when the game is purchased, has Duke sent to the moon to hunt the evil genius he didn't manage to kill in the first episode. Also, in Episode 3: Trapped in the Future, Evil genius sends Duke to the future, without any means of return. Meanwhile he creates his out future by conquering the galaxy. Duke must stop his plans, but first he has to escape from the "future". The main objective of the game is to get to the exit of each level, while destroying enemies and collecting points. The game was notable in its time because of its smart level design which allows very fast gameplay. Additionally, it allows many objects onscreen to be shot: obstacles, as well as enemies, can be destroyed by gunfire. Besides points, some collectibles include health powerups, gun powerups, and some inventory items with special abilities. At the end of every level (with the exception of the last level in each episode), the player can receive up to seven 10,000 point bonuses, earned by making certain achievements in the level, such as destroying all cameras.
