Dungeon Keeper was a big change from the standard strategy games of the day. Instead of playing a good or misunderstood side, you were downright evil. You wanted to turn the world into living hell. This change of tone, and the subsequent change of gameplay to match, made it a very unusual addition to the world of RTS games. Not many other games have picked up the torch in regards to this, but the impact that was felt upon release was tremendous, and Dungeon Keeper is still highly regarded. It revolves around a dungeon keeper who seeks to turn the world above into a literal hell. In order to do this, he must kill all of the heroes in a particular area to deprive the townsfolk of protection, which then gives him free reign to expand upwards. You play this dungeon keeper, and this desire to corrupt the world above manifests itself as your campaign. You must use your gold to build a fortress and weapons to attack. As well as being able to rotate the 3D view, and control the light source, you can enter the direct viewpoints of your men, to see life through their eyes (one character's mode goes into black and white for this). The storyline is minimal at best, but manages to be incredibly funny and endearing, despite the fact that you are brutally murdering hundreds of innocents. Dungeon Keeper Gold contained the original game, Deeper Dungeons, the 3D patches, a game editor, and a desktop theme pack.
