LOKI: HEROES OF MYTHOLOGY (2007 RPG) is an action/RPG in the Titan Quest / Diablo / Torchlight mold. Despite being released in 2007, the game nowadays (circa 2015) has virtually no support for it at all. Some of the reason for this lack of support is the absence of a modding scene for the game. I have read that Cyanide Studio, which developed the game, considered modding a form of cheating and so made it difficult for people to mod the game. They made modding difficult by encrypting the files that contained the game information, XML files, into XMD files. Eventually, someone wrote a program that decrypted XMD files into regular ol' XML files and could also re-encrypt these XML files back into XMD files. This program is commonly referred to as the "XMD Decryptor / Encryptor" or "XMD Decryptor." While widespread back in 2007 when the program debuted, it is now very difficult to find this program as a lot of the sites that used to host the file either no longer exist or no longer host the file.
However, I have managed to find the file (I hope) to spare others from the minutes / hours / decades of searching. I can not vouch that this is the program itself for I have not installed Loki yet to test it out.
Some caveats:
- A lot of people claim that the program in general, and not necessarily from the link provided, gives out virus warnings. The creator of the program has replied that these are "false positives." As the creator replied to these allegations back when the program was readily accessible from his own blog, this rebuttal would likely have some credibility but, from 3rd-party websites, the validity of that rebuttal can not be known. Consider yourself warned.
- There have been allegations that, if the game is patched all of the way up to v1.0.8.3 (which seems to be the final version available), that this program no longer works. Again, I have no idea if this is true or not. Again, consider yourself warned.
- Supposedly, there is another program out on the internet that can perform the same function, called "xmd2xml." I haven't found that program yet but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Happy hunting.
So, with all of that being written, if you have a hunkering for some modern-day LOKI modding but have never found the XMD Decryptor / Encryptor program, the link is (supposedly) below. Rejoice.
