A question i have with C&C:TFD & post-SR1 LOK games  Topic is solved

Postby Fighter4575 » Wed Mar 29, 2017 3:05 pm

Ok, now i have heard that there is an anti-piracy tactic in Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge and where all of your units are destroyed minutes after starting the campaign. So, is this present in the C&C: The First Decade version of the game (and expansion pack)?
Also, i have heard that there are crashes in the GOG versions of all of the Legacy of Kain games which came out after Soul Reaver 1. One of which i experienced in the intro cinematic (the one in game, where Raziel meets Moebius) of Soul Reaver 2 and i have heard that this problem is also present in GOG versions of Blood Omen 2 and Defiance (not confirmed, though). I have installed the old GOG versions of SR2 (from a torrent site since MEGA hasn't fixed the bandwidth quota problem). So, is this present only in old GOG versions of the games (they could have been fixed in the new versions)? Also, does this happen in the original CD versions of the games or not? I do know the solutions of this crash problem (compatibility mode, changing CPU cores) though but i would still like to know. And lastly, if this problem is also present in Blood Omen 2 and Defiance?

First time I'm hearing on RA2 + Yuri doing such lulz. Only one anon elsewhere stated that it doesn't happen on TFD (SafeDisc 4 instead of 2 on the initial retail releases) Me thinks the DRM validity detection re-adaptation was simply too timewasting and silly, and therefore that hindrance was just removed, or at least disabled, although it's EA we're talking, notorious compat-breakers overprotective of their jewgolds (firmly believing though they had to draw the line regarding the issue 'cause dude, it's DirectDraw during the advent of Vista & 7 :omg: )! For support regarding TFD in its entirety try your luck here...
Also I had no issues with both SR1 & SR2 (both GOG versions, 8.1 host Compaq crap), so I don't believe you would with those, dunno about BO2 (beat it long ago on me olde XP SP2, no knowledge on later systems' compat, sorry :( ) & Defiance though due to different engines. As for the bandwidth quota get MegaDownloader, that one ain't getting fixed, ever (it's a free-user restriction "feature") :x

Lets do this like this :
> Mega 3gig daily quota only happens though browsers ... Jdowload2 goes around that
>RA2 and Yuri had its own version of Fade , you had to replace on Allied CD1 setup_allied.exe before installation and then run a keygen .. this was on vanilla 1.0, but after server maintenance and patches ... a random key and a simple cracked exe surfaced
> all Kain games work , but all of them are pre 64bit and work only on OS that have a 32bit stub and where build on Directx8c (you have to install DX8C and Dx9 on win10 to make those game work ...or use a DxWnd with Dx8/Dx9 emulation) , you can force push them and they work ... only problematic was Soul Reaver 2 but after you patched it to 1.02 and added the Vista fix that added Dx9 compatibility ... it worked fine http://ps2wide.net/pc.html#sr2
> the new GOG versions of all Five Kain games only have those patches pre-installed ... and some have DX8c or Dx9 files/installations

Ok, i am going to give my replies in a list.

1. "First time I'm hearing on RA2 + Yuri doing such lulz". Wait, so does this happen on certain pirated copies of the games because i remember seeing this anti-piracy tactic on WatchMojo's list of anti-piracy tactics (complete with footage for proof) and i am starting to believe that the TFD versions don't have this tactic (the support page doesn't mention this but there are patches for the games included there so maybe those fix the issue). I will let you know when i finally download the DVD ISO of TFD (Disc 1).

2.About LOK - The old GOG version of SR2 i have installed has been patched to 1.02 (since the widescreen patch you installed works) but here are my issues with the game (forgot to mention those). The crashing problem i mentioned only happened when i added the CpuCount line in the target line of the shortcut. This didn't happen when i played it in sr2.exe (default on installation folder). Now, the real issue, for some reason it overheats my laptop and shuts it down in 5 minutes, which shouldn't be happening because this came out in 2001. For proof that this is a problem with the game, i play games in Power Saver mode (yes, even DOS games) and i tried this with GTA:SA with everything set to low and i can play it for 2 hours (not bad) and same with Psychonauts (though i don't know for how long i can play that though) and those games came out in 2005. So, how come i can't play a game from 2001 for more than 5 minutes, yet i can play games from 2005 just fine? Oh, and while i did max out SR2 when this issue happened (twice), the game runs at smooth 60 FPS. So, is this a issue with compatibility since i can play two games from 2005 for more than 5 minutes and SR2 runs at 60 fps with everything maxed out.

Also, while i haven't tried SR1 yet (i have it installed for days), i am pretty sure it can run fine.

The tactic (which should now be considered an issue IMO) is also reported of happening with legit retail and newer digital copies (reported by more than one anon, there also exist a MP-only special portable build made for a site that is to circumvent the issue on online play, nothing that a little :google: + Wayback Machine can't recover me thinks) but as said before, only one anon reported the state on TFD so we'd appreciate on reporting how yer experiment went, :thanks: for that :D
As for SR2 I'm baffled and dunno how yer case can be handled, could give a few tips but not sure of being any effective (for example Power Saver for gaming, even moderate one, is akin to footshooting), grab from hgdagon's DL and report back. And also good luck BTW :hi:

I have fixed the overheating issue of SR2 (don't worry, even i was baffled when that happened. Seriously, how in the Elder God's name is that even possible?!? :x ). I changed the compatibility mode to XP SP2, disabled Antialias and maxed out texture filtering. The game worked smoothly without overheating and shutting down but the crashing issue is still there. I have heard that there are two solutions to this: changing compatibility mode to an even older OS like Win 95 or changing CPU core affinity.

So, which compatibility mode do i have to set to fix this or atleast tell me how to change CPU cores (i actually don't know how to do that, so maybe it is better you tell me that)?

For the little time I had the game installed I can't help ye on the matter, left everything default (nothing compat, or anything else) and it worked flawlessly. Kill antivirus, get external fan and/or try hfric's wrapper solution, dunno any better rly, sry m8 :(

I was able to fix the crashing issue too. I just set the compatibility mode to Vista (as in the original) and i didn't experience any crashes. In other words, SR2 works properly now.

I will not make a new post about the issues i may encounter with C&C: TFD, Blood Omen 2 and Defiance. I will post them here if i encounter them.
