Frogger: The Great Quest

Postby I_AM » Tue Feb 28, 2006 9:27 pm

Downloaded and unpacked fine, when I try to run it the screen goes fullscreen and black for a moment, then closes.
I use Windows 2000. I tried compatability mode but made no difference.
Any suggestion ?

I've tried XP before, didn't like it. XP is also NT based, Win2k reports as "Windows NT 5.0", and XP as "Windows NT 5.1".
A game like this I think it very unlikely there will be any patches for it.
Odd that is should have problem just on 2K.
Nevermind, I'm not _that_ desperate to play it ;\ Thanks for replying anyway.

I know that but like i said Virtual PC is good for old games becoz it can only emulate S3trio Svga video card and Vmware is good for newer games hey i can even run X3 on it  well is slow as hell has only 10 fps but it runs and can fool Starforce :P ,

Hi I_AM,

i am also using Win2k ;) and my recommendations for these MSDOS
games are:

- VMWare
In my opinion the best solution but the prob is: its not freeware.

- DosBox/Abandonloader in conjunction with VDMSound for newer sound
cards
prob: sometimes sound goes async and its not running that smooth.
Some games are not supported.

- installing Microsofts ACT 3.0 (Application Compatibility Toolkit)
-> search after
Code: Select all
act30pkg.exe
for Win2k.
Info: ATC 4.0 is for XP only!
To make a long story short, its installed on my system but i do
encounter better DOS compatibility so far. Duno what i did wrong...

I am still looking after a more handy solution to this odd Win2k/WinXP DOS problem.Replacing some dlls of the DOS kernel for example would be a cool solution. But i dont know which files and what effect the have on system stability. Many of those DOS games arent running on Win2k and WinXP at all...Rayman games for ex.

I will die and get burried with my Win2k

A vast of games from 2003 and back were designed for win 98, it would be better that you used win98, trust me the games will work better with it. And Hey I_AM thank you for The Gift! I've waited that game for years, from the year 2000 when i began to download games :D

I already have qemu, DosBox, VDMSound, and the Ms ACT. I've tried both VPC and VMware, but currently using qemu which is free.
I believe the ACT is for old Windows stuff and needs a specific patch for any application/game, rather than being a generic fix of any kind. I've met it before because somebody made a patch with it to support some Star Wars X-Wing game (forget which exactly).
I noticed there's a Windows binary download of WINE, but it seems to be only for testing purposes, rather than a possibility to add better compatibility with some older Windows games.
