I've noticed that a couple things have been fixed, like some of the topics not updating themselves. But I've noticed that when you open an ongoing thread it opens to the first post rather than the most recent post. Is that the default?

That's default behavior. As-is now, clicking on the topic title will display the first unread post/last page in the thread. If you want to go to the last post, click the (small) icon next to the poster name in the "Last Post" column in the thread list.

I don't know, I never really use the direct topic link much, I'm a sucker for those little icon links.

It's the same board software, so unless they had a design change or the previous forum had a hack installed, it probably was the same on the old board.

You do know that you can adjust this in the User control panel.

Its available by Board preferences by Edit display options by Display post order direction

Maybe it had been adjusted previously in the former board format.
