genre distribution

Postby hypervirus » Sun Nov 22, 2009 5:41 pm

Hi.
I knew 3dsl for a long time, but now there are file garbage. 3D shooters and actions are not RPG, simulators, RTS and etc. They can have some element from other genres but not full.
Robo sim, Racing games with weapons are not shooter.
My suggestion is to allocate firmly all projects and throw out all outside ones.
It can be FPS like Wolf/Doom, TPS like Max Payne, and also combine like Project Nomads,Raven Squad (TPS+RTS), Deus Ex (FPS+RPG),Gothic (TPS+Hack'n'Slash),Quest+TPS/FPS,Arcade and Tactical Shooters/Actions,Games with element racing (GTA,Saint Row 2,Godfather), Kill'em all (Duke3D,Serios Sam,Nitro Famaly), even TPS/FPS + platformer (Eragon,Damnation,Prince of Persian 3D series), stealth (Splinter Cell), educational (Evlover), robosim (Shogo,Lost Planet) and etc with directions: SinglePlayer[historical (Joan of Arc, Call of Duty), fantasy(Blade of Darkness),neofantasy(Sudeki),sci-fi (Area 51,Quake),horror (Call of Cthulhu), psychological(Bloodline),fictional (pseudohistorical) (Darkest of Days,Bioshock,Iron Storm) delirium (Blood,Zero Clash,Redneck Rampage)] Multiplayer(Left 4 Dead,Battlefield),MMO (Planetside)
I suppose you understand what I would like to say.

P.S.
Descent,Defiance, Hypertank, topdown shooters, Alien Shooter, all isometric and profile-view games, static (arcade machine) shooters are not FPS/TPS games, they are arcades, simulators, real RPG, racing...
A lot of info on site is wrong.

I think the idea here at 3dsl is to keep things as simple as possible which is why there are only 2 catagories for each year: Pure FPS and 'Special' which can include anything related, so anything deemed ralated to '3D shooters' can be included: top down shooters, racing/shooters, third person shooters, adventer/shooters, and others.

Take 'Portal' for instance. It's included with the FPS games, even though there are no enemys, and you don't shoot anyone, it's real a logic puzzle game, but it's design is definatly FPS, and it was developed on a FPS engine.

Even if more categories were added, and the site split up, it's just not possible to allocate all games this way.
Some will always fit in more than one category, or not fit in any existing category, or there may be disagreements about what category a game belongs to.

It's also related to what kind of games that the people who created the site love and are prepared to put their effort in to. Other category sites have been proposed before, namely Strategy, but unless somebody is willing to put the effort into creating and maintaining it, it won't happen.

There's a bit of confusion in your post. Firstly strictly FPS games (which have to be 3D, have shooting and be in first-person view) are listed in each year separately. So if that is what you are only interested in, then you can only choose to view those. In the index as well, anything not a true FPS is marked as being in the "Special" category of related games that FPS fans "may" also enjoy.

The categories you mentioned that should be included have some titles that don't belong as they don't involve shooting - Gothic, Eragon, Prince Of Persia 3D series, Joan Of Arc, Blade Of Darkness, Sudeki. TPS games are included in the Special area because they don't have first-person view and other types of games as well that shooter fans might enjoy like Mech sims, hovercraft shooters as stated in our faq - http://www.legendsworld.net/3DSL/faq.htm#1

I think game tags might be a good solution here.

Well. FPS, TPS with shooting or without can be in one directory.
But topdown, isometric are absolutely other kinds. I think we must create 2 new groups: arcade (static shooting, non FPS/TPS action or arcade) and simulator (tanks, robots, auto, moto, ships, aircrafts). It is like adventure as separate one.
Only the view behind person and the first person view must be in 3dshooter group.
Once it was so, but after games like House of the Dead were added I saw difference.

Maybe we are specialists in the industry, but some people go to 3dsl to find the genre what they like. For kids or for army or for madman...

P.S.mod and pack are not original games :) I mean Fallout 3,Painkiller,FEAR mods
