Note to add to the Doom 3/Doom 3:ROE listing

Postby Trey » Thu May 20, 2010 2:51 am

Doom 3 also connects to ID's server to verifiy your CD key, but you edit the servers address so that it can't reach it and automatically validates the CD key you've enter. Of course this is a fix only for the single player game.

Also I've added how to edit the config file to give you widescreen custom resolutions.

Problem:
When the game boots up, it asks me to enter my CD-Key again: When I do, it says "This CD-Key is already in use".

Other Symptoms:
* This happens even AFTER I install the crack from the \deviance directory from the ISO image.
* The instructions say to "block Doom 3 from accessing the internet with my firewall", but my Service Pack 2 firewall doesn't pop up when I run Doom 3!
* When I add an exception to the SP-2 Firewall and leave it unchecked, or leave the IP range of machines able to access it to a 192.x.x.x IP address, I STILL get the "This CD-Key is invalid" message!

Solution:
EDIT YOUR TCP/IP HOSTFILE!
1. Start -> "Run"
2. Enter "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" without quotes.
3. A dialogue opens that asks which program you want to use to open the file. Choose "Notepad".
4. Now you will see a display explaining what the hostfile is and what it does. Go to the very last line in the entire document... the one that says "127.0.0.1 localhost".
5. In the line after "127.0.0.1 localhost", you will add "127.0.0.1 d3master.idsoftware.com", enter, and then also "127.0.0.1 idnet.ua-corp.com".
6. Save changes, exit the document.
7. Launch Doom 3. You will see, a dialogue that says the game is trying to connect to validate CD-Key.

It'll take a few seconds (It's actually connecting to nowhere), and then the key will be automatically validated and you can play.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
For Solution step 5, make sure that you hit "tab" to get the spacing between the IP address and the host name. I don't know if the tabbed space or if hitting that number of spaces makes any difference, but for me, I used the tab: And it worked. Don't say I didn't tell ya!

*NOTE: Once you install the Doom:Ressurrection Of Evil add-on you'll need to use the Doom:Ressurrection Of Evil serial for BOTH Doom 3 and the add-on.*

Need Widescreen?

Edit DoomConfig.cfg

Select widescreen resolution
If Doom 3 doesn't list your widescreen resolution you can try to set it manually like this:
r_mode -1 - custom resolutions on
r_customwidth 1280 - custom screen width
r_customheight 720 - custom screen height

Set a width and height matching the aspect ratio you have. Here are some examples of resolutions (Width x Height):

852x480 16:9 Widescreen
1280x720 16:9 Widescreen
1365x768 16:9 Widescreen
1440x900 16:10 Widescreen
1680x1050 16:10 Widescreen
1920x1200 16:10 Widescreen
320x240 4:3 Aspect ratio
2048x1535 4:3 Aspect ratio

For more resolutions, check out our extensive list of 4:3 and Widescreen resolutions.

Select 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio
To change Doom 3's aspect ratio to suit your widescreen monitor or projector, add in: seta r_aspectratio N, where N is some of the following numbers:

0 - 4:3 (standard monitor / TV)
1 - 16:9 (widescreen movies ratio)
2 - 16:10 (some monitors are 16:10)

For example "seta r_aspectratio 1" will set a 16:9 aspect ratio.
This gives you a true widescreen fov, horizontal fov will be increased while the vertical fov stays the same.
When you have set a new aspect ratio, you can use the g_fov command to change Doom 3's fov as usual.
g_fov 90

An alternative method is to block DOOM 3 and Quake 4 with a firewall (not the one included in Windows XP, it only blocks incoming connections).

True, but I don't have one, and I wasn't going to install one just to play Doom 3.

Because it is a game that doesn't get played by a lot of people anymore, so if somebody does want to try it I want to tell them how they can do it, so they don't have to hunt on the internet for solutions on their own.

Kheh, actually it's VERY popular. Tons of maps, decent MP, good stability. Why not to kill your best friend? I've played many times and it was good enough to play again.
