Kickstarter crowd funding of games.

Postby Scaryfun » Mon Jun 04, 2012 10:59 pm

For those who haven't heard about it yet, this site allows for fans to fund a developer of different projects including video games. It made headlines in gaming community when Double Fine (the maker of Psychonauts, Stacking and other adventures) whose founder Tim Schafer created for his previous company (LucasArts) such games as Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, and (half of) Day of the Tentacle raised $3,336,371 for their next game when they were only asking for $400,000. It shows that fans of adventure games are underserved by game publishers who are unwilling to fund certain less popular genres.

The way the site works is that people can choose to donate with a credit card to a project. If the project meets its funding goal by its set deadline, then it is fully funded. But if it does not meet its goal, noone is charged. Depending on how much you donate, you can received the finished game when it's completed, or other items or limited edition products as well.

Here's some current projects that still need your support and their status as of June 19:

Ones I want (already funded):

Wasteland 2
- http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2
- Post-apocalypse RPG (mix of Fallout + Fallout Tactics)

Dreamfall Chapters - TLJ (2014 schedule) (**)
- http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/red ... sts/422425
- Basically TLJ3, adventure; hopefully much expanded

Torment - Tides of Numenera (****)
- http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inx ... f-numenera
- Spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment (RPG)
- "What does one life matter?'
(Correction: Spiritual --successor--, not sequel)

Yeah, there's plenty of nice projects that got funded which will be released this year or next. Stuff that publishers wouldn't have invested in but fans want.
This site does a nice weekly roundup of the status of kickstarter projects -

Some cool projects i found.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/17 ... /last-life

and

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ou ... d?ref=live

The second one is a reboot of a nice old action game called outcast.
kill a man and you're a murderer,
kill many and you're a conqueror,
kill them ...all and you're god

It seems kickstarter projects are getting less notice than in the past. Maybe because media doesn't report on the latest thing unless it's shiny and new.
Rock Paper Shotgun doesn't seem to do Kickstarter weekly summaries anymore but I looked around and found this instead - http://boardgamegeek.com/blog/3021
