COLLAPSE English Materials (Link)

Postby wkduffy » Mon May 02, 2011 5:21 pm

I’m not calling this an English “patch” for “Collapse: Devastated World” (2008) because that would be misleading. Instead, it’s a collection of “English Translation Materials” that English-speaking gamers can use in varying ways to access the narrative of the game.

A link to these “Materials” are at the end of this epic post (apologies for the length), but I suggest you read this first because using these files may be more work than you bargained for. NOTE: ON-SCREEN MENUS ARE STILL IN RUSSIAN--SO IF THIS IS A DEALBREAKER FOR YOU, THEN DON'T BOTHER WITH THESE MATERIALS (although a pdf of translated screenshots of menus is included here for reference purposes—better than nothing).

What is included:

1. Ten in-game cutscenes will have English subtitles.

2. Over 30 animated dialogue sequences will have English subtitles.

3. Six other cutscenes will unfortunately still play in-game WITHOUT English subs, but these are included in a separate folder WITH English subs to be watched outside the game in any media player at the appropriate time.

4. The English translated pdf game manual, worth checking out.

5. A pdf showing screenshots of 32 main game menus (and pop-up tutorial screens) in English (since I couldn't provide on-screen translations—not ideal, but it suffices for those of you who REALLY want to play this in English and can’t figure out the menus on your own).

6. Save files to unlock all checkpoints in the game.

7. Some artwork (standard DVD case and disc face).

8. There’s an extensive Readme explaining what to do with these materials. You really should pay attention to it to get the most out of this stuff.

EDITORIAL: While doing all this took 2.5 months, I’m glad to have played the game in (mostly) English. While far from perfect, it’s a carefully crafted, quite beautiful third-person “hack-n-slash-n-shooter hybrid” with a lot of attention to detail and a fun, although clichéd, apocalyptic sci-fi story (which I am a sucker for everytime). Why this wasn’t released domestically in the west is a total mystery to me. (Anybody shed light on that?) I don’t read or speak a lick of Russian; this was completed character-by-character with an online Cyrillic keyboard and Google Translator Kit. In other words, anyone could’ve done it. If you are a programmer (unlike me) with the chops to make the on-screen menus into English, feel free to add to this work here, and advertise it. ENJOY.

Review of “Collapse: Devastated World” on my blog:

English Translation “Materials” (with bonus artwork and saveGame files). It's a 38-part rar file, 3.6Gb in all, so make sure you get all of it. (The file is large because many of the altered wmv files with English subs are bigger than the original game files). If you have a premium (pay) account at 4shared, you can download the entire folder, all files, at once.; if you don't, then you have to dl the 38 rar files individually, of course. Enjoy.

Actually it would probably be possible to RIP the english files from the Xbox game, for the PC version.

Yeah, I played MorphX on the 360 whilst in the middle of translating Collapse. It's cruddy fun, but nowhere in the same league as Collapse, I think. I'd be psyched to see Collapse in ANY official English version, console included. It deserves some kind of release for westerners...

BTW, do you have any links about the 2011/2012 release on the 360? I'd love to read up on it...

The narrative: In 2096, a massive anomaly opens up in Kiev. An evacuation and quarantine ensues, and a barricade of gun turrets is erected to destroy the alien creatures emerging from the hole. (Creatures that, as the game conjectures, may exist simply to protect the anomaly from us, rather than existing to hunt us.)

The anomaly itself is composed of a black material that dissolves anything that comes into contact with it, and it cannot be studied (until humans develop "vacuum chambers" a decade after the appearance; these chambers are low-gravity fields that allow us close contact with the material for scientific observation).

100 years later, handfuls of folks who have been left stranded in the "zone" form (sometimes warring) clans. The person in charge behind the scenes is Zinovsky, a scientist with questionable motives who has on occasion massacred his own staff in order to hide (from the government) his scientific investigations into the anomaly, the material that composes it, and how it might be weaponized for his personal uses.

His right-hand scientist, Elena, is actually working against Zinovsky in secret and aids you in your quest to shut the anomaly down for good. This process requires a series of keys--tech developed as a result of the anomaly that you collect throughout the game. There are also "oracles"--altered people who (due to their proximity to the anomaly at its initial appearance) have become blind, and the event changed their internal organs, while inexplicably providing them with an understanding of the universe beyond normal human comprehension. They know what the anomaly really is: An intersection of our world with another...

It might all be goofy, B movie stuff. And I agree: You don't need to know Russian to play the game. But there's no way I would have understood any of this without an English translation. And my time with the game was unquestionably enriched because of it. Otherwise it woud have just been a point-and-shoot affair. Snooze.

A mindless, plotless action game. That what it is and nothing more. It's good but can't offer you something really cool.

Hmmm seems there is an English version coming for PC next year...and it will only have taken them 4 years. :p

Check the game when it's released in case they used your translation...then you could sue them.

Re: COLLAPSE English Materials (Link)

Sorry to necro this thread, but it's relevant for any who care: This has FINALLY been released on Steam in English. All I have to say is...IT'S ABOUT GODDAMN TIME!!!! It may not be a great game, but in my estimation, it is a good game with a cool setting and a fun story (and agreed, the protag has awful dreadlocks). Since my translation efforts were never fully realized (there were many parts of the game files I was never able to unpack and translate, only about maybe half of it), I think now I'll play it in English as intended. (In fact, I recently bought the Italian retail copy under the title "After the War," thinking I might be able to crack open those files instead, but they were all the same as the original Ukrainian files; btw, it was also released in Spain under this same alternate title, but never in English.) Link to Steam below. Cheers.

They are supposed to release the sequel in English too. I don't have high hopes though.
