Maybe add a section for Arcade Coin-Op Ports for Genre?

Postby GonnaHaveMeSumFun » Tue Mar 10, 2015 6:43 pm

Arcade ports aren't that great, but I missed the gold old days of hanging around my local arcades watching people play matches or have a blast with strangers playing those lightgun shooting games. Etc., Co-op gaming in local arcades was some of the most fun I ever had, namely when playing 6 Players simultaneously co-op for Konami's X-Men. It gets really hilarious sometimes.

I know that most of the times the official ports conversion are awful, but that doesn't stop me from exploring them. I just want to see how they turned out compared to the original Arcade versions as well as their Game Console conversions.

Now I am aware that there are better alternative such as use an Arcade emulator like MAME to play emulated versions since you'd get an Arcade-Perfect experience, but I'm also interested in playing any Native PC Windows/DOS (or even Mac OS) Ports of Arcade Coin-Operated games whenever possible and if available. It's kind of like going to the Arcade but only no quarters or tokens needed.

Some times some original Arcade game Roms like Area 51 are quite big because sometimes they require a dumped cloned hard disk drive image file also- .chd files before they will work in MAME. I would rather save some hard drive space when ever possible by playing a native PC/Mac version instead in those cases.

So far the only ones I've known available here at Legends World are- (not all are available for download, some are still fairly new from 2013)

Area 51
Beach Head 2000 <-Actually this one first available on Windows and Mac first
Big Buck Hunter
Cabal
Crimzon Clover World Ignition
Darius Gaiden
Defender
ExZeus
G-Darius
Gradius Deluxe Pack (Gradius 1 & 2)
Ikaruga
Layer Section/Rayforce
Layer Section 2/Raystorm
Maximum Force
Missile Command
Operation Blockade
Raiden
Raiden II
Raiden III
Raiden Legacy
RayCrisis
Revolution X
Shikigami no Shiro series
Sky Shark / Flying Shark
Space Harrier
Space Invaders
Space Pirates (Adventure Legends)
T2: The Arcade Game
The House of The Dead
The House of The Dead 2
The House of The Dead 3
The Typing of The Dead
The Typing of The Dead 2
Virtua Squad / Virtua Cop
Virtua Squad 2 / Virtua Cop 2
Virtual On: Cybertroopers
XII Stag (Limited)
Zaxxon

Adventure Legends-

Atari Arcade Hits: Volume 1
Batman Forever: The Arcade Game
Capcom Arcade Hits Vol. 3: Commando & Gunsmoke
Microsoft Revenge of Arcade
Midway Arcade Treasures
Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition
Bust-A-Move / Puzzle Bobble
Robocop (1989)
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
Taito Legends
Taito Legends 2
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989)

(this list will be continuously updated as it is currently incomplete, so please bare with me)

A lot of those 2D shoot 'em ups or those "bullet hell" type of games are on this list. I don't remember all their names. Typically they involve a spacecraft or some combat aircraft controlled by the player.

If anybody want to help me and look through the entire list to help me figure out which games were originally Arcade Machines maybe we can compile the full list and then this filter can be added I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

If you and others want to make a list then I can add them as a category in the A-Z Index as a genre. As you noted, we have begun adding shmups to 3D Shooter Legends, so there will be a bunch of arcade ports there. Also, in Adventure Legends there is now a Casual game section on each year page where we'll be adding classic arcade games which are addictive quick time wasters.

That's basically what I meant. I wanted some assistance to identify which games were originally Arcade Coin-Operated Machines and then once the list is more or less done then you could add a filter link under Genre.

Right now I'm focusing on just the Shooters Legends, if someone can help me identify the ones in Adventure Legends, much appreciated.

I've started to dig around and go through the list on Adventure Legends. If anyone wants to help me, then that would be great in case I missed a well-known arcade coin-op conversion to PC (DOS or Windows, doesn't really matter)

Minor Notes:

For Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe Edition it provides arcade conversions of the following games

APB
Arch Rivals
Badlands
Championship Sprint
Cyberball 2072
Gauntlet II
Hard Drivin’
Kozmik Krooz'r
Hydro Thunder
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat II
Mortal Kombat 3
NARC
Offroad Thunder
Pit-Fighter
Primal Rage
Race Drivin
Rampage World Tour
San Francisco Rush 2049
San Francisco Rush the Rock: Alcatraz Edition
S.T.U.N. Runner
Super Off Road (with Track Pack)
Timber
Total Carnage
Wacko
Wizard of Wor
Xenophobe
Xybots

While the regular Midway Arcade Treasures is a compilation of the following 24 games:

720°
Blaster
Bubbles
Defender
Defender II (a.k.a. StarGate)
Gauntlet
Joust
Joust 2: Survival of the Fittest
Klax
Marble Madness
Paperboy
Rampage
Rampart
RoadBlasters
Robotron: 2084
Root Beer Tapper
Satan's Hollow
Sinistar
Smash TV
SPLAT!
Spy Hunter
Super Sprint
Toobin'
Vindicators

Good start, I've been adding 80's arcade classics under Casual category of Adventure Legends. Basetta has been upping a lot of floppy images of those classics too as well as other members too. I'll try to make a list when I have some time.

Of all the ones you mentioned. This one definitely rang a bell since I remembered seeing this game at my local arcade before they closed it down more than 10 years ago.

I did play it a few times but paid more attention to stuff like lightgun shooters such as The House Of The Dead, Area 51, scrolling shooters like Metal Slug games, beat 'em ups like The Simpsons and Golden Axe, and fighting games like the Mortal Kombat, The King Of Fighters, Killer Instinct and Street Fighter Alpha games.

And who can forget that 6 Players-supported Co-Op X-Men game from Konami if they been to an Arcade?

I didn't remember or pay that much attention to the Shmups until I look at the screen shots of the game.

Other reason I missed or overlook them is because those Bullet Hell shmups can get quite frustrating because typically the player is generally killed/destroyed in a single hit, so lots of timing and luck is needed in order to get good at playing and completing them, especially for the High Score, since that's what they were meant for. I don't know but I would want to play stuff more frequently where I don't get killed/destroyed so quickly in a single hit since they give some room players to make mistakes and still be able to complete them.

But if Freeplay (Unlimited Continues or Lives) is possible it can be quick mindless fun.

Don't worry though I will include them on this list since all Arcade Conversions whether good, lame, mediocre, way too easy or way too frustrating to complete or even plain terrible will be included.

However for something like Elvria: The Arcade Game should not be part of this list since it was "Never" an actual Coin-Op Arcade game machine.

I uploaded the Shikigami no Shiro series awhile back. They are already on the site.

It's pretty strange you mentioned Raycrisis but not the prequels.

It's probably because I either looked through this list here at mobygames: http://www.mobygames.com/genre/sheet/co ... onversion/

and saw it listed and then checked elsewhere to confirm that there was an actual arcade machine before adding it to the list.

Or that I google search it using 3d shooter legends and the word arcade thus it appeared in the results and then I checked elsewhere just to make sure it was an actual arcade coin-op game.

I never actually played or seen raycrisis at my local arcades though.

I actually took the time and gone through the list from MobyGames (http://www.mobygames.com/genre/sheet/co ... onversion/) but I can tell that list is largely incomplete and inaccurate for most part, but this is absolutely everything on that list that included Windows PC ports of Arcade Coin-Operated games.

I am unsure of how many are already available here at Legends World as I have not had the time to go through and search through everything individually but I had already found many of the other ones previously mentioned.

I indicated which we have on site in green. Of course, we don't the fighters, sports of other genres that aren't covered in Legends World.

I've just updated it to include Metal Slug PC Collection since Supernova had recently added that when I had requested it. I'll test as many of the ones you had confirmed available and get back to you if I find any problems such as major compatibility issues, like any crashes or unable to start the game etc. on Windows 10.

Thanks!

Just a heads up that Adventure Legends now has an Arcade Conversions list in the A-Z Index page. I went through both 3DSL and Adventure Legends and I believe I have all the ones we have indicated as such in database now, including all the ones indicated in this thread. :)

There's a few more that I still have to make entries for, such as:
84 Root Beer Tapper http://www.mobygames.com/game/pc-booter/tapper
88 Rampage http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/rampage/screenshots
90 Klax http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/klax
91 Simpsons Arcade http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/simpsons
91 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles http://www.mobygames.com/game/teenage-m ... creenshots
94 Total Carnage http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/total-carnage
