I don't know of anyplace better to put this, so here I go... does anyone else receive PMs and then get an e-mail notifying them of it several hours later, or am I just special?

You can set it to not send send you emails in your profile settings.

I'm fine with that bit -- I like getting E-mailed when I get a PM. It's the whole "notified a few hours later" thing I'm curious about.

When you check your messages on the website you contact the 3DSL server directly.
When you're being notified by email, it will depend on other servers that the message has to travel through to get to you, so it may well be delayed if those other servers are slow for whatever reasons.
