Paragraf 78 (2007) English Translation

Postby wkduffy » Wed Dec 07, 2011 3:33 am

Apologies ahead of time for the epic post.

3 weeks ago, MasteromaN hinted that he’d be upping an English translation patch he was working on for a Russian FPS. As a purveyor of bottom-barrel eastern European games, I found out that game was right up my alley--the generally crappy movie tie-in game “Paragraf 78” (2007, developed by Gaijin and published by 1C). The movie itself is described as an Alien-ripoff, but without aliens and without special FX of any kind really…that actually plays more like a lengthy soap opera than anything else (with some cool fight scenes). In other words, not all that flattering. Chances are likely the game is several tiers below that.

MasteromaN’s in-game translation (all menus, in-game dialogue, credits) worked great. Especially impressive, he translated this Russian product from French into English, which is not his first language. Cheers on that! But one thing: For several reasons, on purpose, he decided not to translate the 12 cutscenes in the game, which are simply clips lifted out of the movie itself. Providing subtitles for the in-game movie clips would greatly increase the download size of anyone wanting to use the patch, and also, finding English subs for the film was exceedingly difficult (at least subs that would properly sync with the film). No subtitles for the movie clips were ever included in the game itself, so there was nothing there to translate.

But go figure, I can’t leave well enough alone. After much teeth-grinding, I managed to find copies of the flick with pieces of it including Russian subs and pieces with Polish subs. Using these various materials, I could encode the clips from the flick, translate, burn English subs onto the clips, and convert them so they could be inserted into the game. And before you ask: No, I am not unemployed with a lot of time on my hands. And yes, I am pathologically obsessive.

Now, through our combined efforts, we have completely translated this (probably) piece of crap game. I mean, what else do we live for? I haven’t played the game yet, but as MasteromaN said in his note with his original translation: “You’ve been warned.”

Below is a link to the combined materials (both MasteromaN’s in-game translation and my movie clips with English subs) with directions on what to do with them.

NOTE to Scaryfun: MasteromaN suggested that you may want to leave his original upload in place, since it does not include the movies and is more manageable a download (size-wise) for people who don’t care about having the movie clips in English. But the link here is all the material inclusive. You make the call on that.

I'd vote for both patches being available. Cenega, Polish BioShock 2 publisher, did an identical move, issuing a LITE translation patch for the game, without movies and a FULL translation patch, including them. With these unofficial patches, situation could as well be identical.

BTW, a little glitch in initializing the game at higher resolutions (has nothing to do with the patch).

The "video" options screen has preset resolutions (640x480 up through 1920x1080, your typical fare).

But if you set the rez to anything higher than 1600x1024 (or 1280x1024) [the key number here is the 1024], the game will not initialize and you get a fatal error like so:

FATAL ERROR
prog\engine2\guiBase\font.cpp.52:
cannot find font file for: <gui/Hooge48>, h=1080 <<(this number here will show the height of whatever rez you might be using that exceeds 1024)

So, basically the game is saying it is missing the right size font to match any rez above a height of 1024 (for example, 1920x1080, if you are playing on a high def TV screen). To fix this, all you have to do is go into the folder called "gui" in the game directory and rename one of the font files to match the name of the one the error says the game is missing. For example, in the gui folder, you'll find a file called "Hooge48.1024.bin" (as well as several others with differing numbers). What I did is I just picked the file with the largest listed number (which happens to be 1024, since the game won't initialize anything greater than 1024) and changed the filename to whatever the error message said it was missing. In my case, I renamed "Hooge48.1024.bin" to "Hooge.48.1080.bin" since I wanted to play at a widescreen rez of 1920x1080 and the game booted fine.

One more important note: Not sure if this is just when playing at a higher rez, but the video options screen has anti-aliasing of x0, x2, and x4. On my rig, if I set it at the highest of x4, all I would get is a black screen during gameplay (game was running, but could not see anything). At x2, everything seems to show normal.

Sorry if this is TMI.

This IS a pain in the ass. The game deserves a repack :D I'll do one. :D

I think a repack would be tops. Just 2 more items:

1. Scaryfun: I offer the following game synopsis which might better describe the nature of this game than the current summary listed on 3DSL. Most of the summaries around the net are vague at best and poorly translated. Use this if you choose, but fine if you don't:

In the near future, a crew of Special Forces` ex-members is assigned to an important mission--a unique opportunity for long-retired commandos to reconnect with their brothers in arms. It is suspected that a virulent biological weapon—a virus engineered by the Russian military—has been accidentally released because the isolated missile base and laboratory responsible for its development is transmitting a repeating SOS on an unsecured channel. Are terrorists at work? Have the lab scientists succumbed to their own virus, turning them into rabid, animal-like creatures? Is there an antidote? As the crew embarks into the unknown, the potential outbreak is not the only danger they will face—unfortunately, they still have unresolved issues between them from the old days. They must overcome these interpersonal struggles if they are to work together and come out of this mission alive…

Game features:
Quality character animation and models taken from the movie.
Voiced by the original actors.
Wide-open spaces, and claustrophobic corridors.
Interesting missions requiring brave fighting skills.
Intense fights with people and zombies infected with the virus.
Huge arsenal at your disposal.
A realistic game engine Dagor 3.0, includes Bump, Volume Light, HDR, LDR, Dynamic shadows, and much more.

2. Lastly (for the two of you who might be interested) because I am so last decade and like shelf copies of games :( , I made a DVD cover (and DVD face for printable media) for this one. I'm no Photoshop guru, but I git along OK. Links for both below. Hey, someone's gotta show these bottom-barrel games the love, no? (Feel free to actually answer "no.")

Awesome work you did there, wkduffy! Thanks also for the new summary. Would you like to have your patch uploaded somewhere else than that personal.psu.edu site? Like 4Shared for example.

I think the best thing to do is to let my patch and add yours to 3DSL. It'd be precised for the videos and people would download what they prefer.

I can see the modification date of 1 file I had translated has changed. What did you modify?

Can't wait for your review of the game! :D

Yo! Thanks, but more thanks to you because I wouldn't have even bothered with the game had you not focused my attention on it. Though I've not played more than the intro, I have a feeling it is something of interest to me and I will write about it. After your comment about "wait until you see my translation before you compliment my English" I did open the text file and read through it and tweaked some of the phrasing here and there, but not much of it actually, just for myself as I played...but then I realized I had included that changed file in the rar I uploaded. For example, at one point Scythian says "It's not big" in response to something that would be better translated as "Not a big deal" or "No problem"...that sort of thing. I think it's neat they actually got the actors to do the voiceovers in the game--somehow to me that makes it more of a "game" than just a movie tie-in product, sort of.

I can put it up on my 4Shared, but I can also leave it on the Penn State web space I have (I don't use it much). With other things I've upped like this, Scaryfun usually ends up grabbing it and putting it up on 4Shared. Feel free to do whatever with it, but I don't know if Delacroix repacks it (above post) if he'll include the patch or what (in other words, make the iso prepatched)? If that's his intention, then no one would need to upload anything but the repacked iso...

Cheers and thanks again.

I'll be checking the game out soon (I download a few parts each day before I get pissed off -- damn 4 shared) and I can't promise modification of the original installer. Most likely I'll be making a custom one with everything integrated.

A repack. It underwent no ripping procedure. It's just that the Russians did no compression for their InnoSetup script. I set it to maximum level :D
