Read any good books?

Post by Old_Schooler »

As much as I enjoy trying to prevent the Great Old Ones from attaining domination of Earth in "Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth," I much more enjoy reading the stories of H.P. Lovecraft that the game was based upon.

I got to thinking about what kind of books you find yourselves engaged in when not enjoying one of the hundreds of games you probably have cooped up on your hard drives. I therefore created this topic to find out.

I just finished reading "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." Having read "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," I became curious as to the literature referenced in it. Jekyll and Hyde is the second book I've read that was referenced in the comic (the first was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.)

I've read several books recently, none of them were keepers though. I'm a big fan of books about Drow (Dark Elves), everyone except for Drizzt who's been way over exposed. The last series I read that I was counting days till the next volume was 'War of the Spider Queen' written by six different authors (1 per book): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_the_Spider_Queen Which unfortunatly ended weaky, but the first 2 books are classics, then you want to see where it all ends. The books heros are all anti-heros, evil charaters who you're rooting for anyway.

Another Drow series I read that I thought was really good was the 'Starlight and Shadows' trilogy- Daughter of the Drow/Tangled Webs/Windwalker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elaine_Cunningham Good stuff, with some genuinely likable characters.

I read quite a few books in my time, but not lately. :(

A month ago i read Kurt Vonnegut's Palm Sunday (for the second time).
At the moment I'm reading Oxford's Dictionary of Idioms (but, nota bene, only in toilet! :P ) and have Bram Stoker's Dracula waiting in line.

The problem is that I find it hard to find enough time and concentrate on a book, since there's so much to do and the Internet trained me to obtain information quicky and consume them even faster.

I got like 1000 scifi/fantasy books, but only a few really good ones.
Two of them I read at least once per year:
Walter M. Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz and Cordwainer Smith's short stories.
Nunc est bibendum!

Almost finished Peter Straub's Koko... about a serial killer former Vietnam vet. It's disappointing; I like his fantasy horror stuff better like the classic Ghost Story. I too have over 1000 books collected, about 1/3 are read... mostly horror, sci-fi and fantasy. The internet has taken over my reading since the millenium.

Right now I'm reading 'City At The End Of Time' by Greg Bear. It's alright, I'm not 'entralled' by it though. Another series I like to recommend alot is the 'Gaia' scifi trilogy by John Varley (Titan, Wizard, Demon), also his book 'Steel Beach' was excellent. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/v/john-varley/

You should have read the last book too, it was real good. More like Wizard than Titan (which was a little weak).

Believe it or not, I couldn't help falling in love with Shakespeare in college (being Othello and Macbeth my favorite plays).
Right now I'm reading "Le Petit Prince" (The Little Prince) because I want to improve my French (I already read this book in English and Spanish); a beautiful story by the way :)
