Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein Alien Edition - Particle Conversion
A well made TC for Wolfenstein. Somebody has edited the game and has changed it, so that it fits in the world which everybody knows from the "Alien" films. Some level graphics and textures were exchanged in this new episode, as for example the doors. The opponents were likewise changed.

Doom

Doom 95 - Source Port
In 1995 in collaboration with Microsoft a source port of Doom was developed for Windows. This will work with all the Doom games. There are no great innovations except higher resolutions and a starter especially made for easier network (or Internet) play.

Doom Builder - Map Editor
Doom Builder is an advanced Doom, Heretic and Hexen map editor (aka level editor). With the flexibility given by the Game Configurations you can customize the support to your needs and support any Doom, Heretic or Hexen engine. No longer bothering about textures and alignments while you can't see them; Do your mapping in 2D mode and jump into the real-time 3D mode to do your texturing and architecturing. No more excuses for texture misalignments! With the real-time editing in the 3D mode you can see exactly how your map will look in the game and you can edit while you look at it with a touch of a button. This editor fully supports several of the popular engines like ZDoom and Doom Legacy. All you need is the original Doom WAD file(s) (doom.wad or doom2.wad, there are a few others too) and the original Doom or one of the modern Doom engine if you will be editing for that. It comes with 3 nodebuilders (BSP, ZDBSP and ZenNode) and you can plug in any other nodebuilder you like.

Doom Legacy - Source Port
When ID software in 1997 published the complete source code to Doom, some fans planned to bring Doom somewhat uptodate. They inserted 3dfx and OpenGL support. Now it's possible to look upwards and downwards and you can even use split-screen for games on a PC. Many detailed improvement were likewise inserted, numerous of them in the multiplayer match area, with deathmatch rankings and different skins. Also different height levels like in Quake are possible. A control similar to Quake and its successor with mouse and keyboard likewise became implemented. And there are resolutions up to 1024 x 768 with clear water, fog effects and support for Heretic and Hexen also. Doom Legacy is still under development with the biggest current change being new coding in C++. Unfortunately, some old mods and user levels do not run with it. However, for all those Doom lovers who on account of the aging graphics no more wanted to play it, Doom Legacy offers the possibility to grow fond of the old game again and play levels with improved visuals.

FreeDoom - Free Source Port Based Game
Freedoom is a project to create a complete Doom-compatible IWAD file which is free software. The IWAD file is the file used by Doom which contains all the game data (graphics, sound effects, music, etc.). While the Doom source code is free, you currently still need one of the proprietary IWAD files from id in order to play Doom. Freedoom aims to create a free alternative. It has already succeeded in creating a complete set of replacement textures for the original Doom games, as well as a large amount of extra material (sound effects, graphics, sprites, etc).

jDoom with Doomsday - Source Port
The Doomsday Engine is an enhanced and extended win32 version of the DOOM engine. It works with a game DLL - either jDoom, jHeretic or jHexen. An IWAD file from the original DOOM, Heretic or Hexen is required. IWADs use the filename extension .WAD and can be found in the directory where you have the original game installed. 3d Model packs and hi-res texture packs are also available which totally transform these classic games into a modern-looking play experience. Very Highly recommended!

ZDoom & ZDaemon - Source Ports
Z-Doom was an extension to Doom and had many new features like free look, higher resolutions and jumping ability. Then on this base later a client server for Doom appeared, allowing for Internet play like in QuakeWorld. The CS-Doom project came from another developer under the name ZDaemon and was further developed. With it there is a so-called server browser (like Gamespy 3D) with which one can recall all active servers and can get then directly connect into a current game!

Aliens TC - Total Conversion
Extravagantly formed complete conversion of Doom - and in my opinion the best one. From the Aliens film, there are borrowed weapon noises and calls, as well as the well-formed Alien opponents, marine weapons and diverse levels. I have played it in singleplayer, as well as in the Co-op mode with a friend and it's extremely fun!

Skulltag - Source Port
Skulltag is a port for the original Doom and Doom II by id Software. Skulltag brings the classic Doom into the 21st century; maintaining the essence of what has made Doom great for so many years, and at the same time adding new features to modernize it, and create a fresh, fun new experience. It has client/server architecture. Play Doom online with up to 32 friends or opponents. It includes over 50 new maps from the best mappers in the community, and more than 15 gameplay modes, including Capture the Flag and Last Man Standing. Numerous modern features, such as Quake-style key bindings, freelooking, and jumping are added. There's also tons of new content, such as weapons, skins, runes, announcers, and monsters. You can add bots, as well as the ability to create custom bots. It uses hardware rendering, through use of the OpenGL graphics library.

This is a port of Ken's Labyrinth to modern operating systems created by Jan Lönnberg, using OpenGL for graphics output and the SDL library to provide user input, sound output, threading, and some graphics support functions. Music output is through Adlib emulation or MIDI.
Jared Stafford then made some improvements to the port. Some of the new features include: support for hi-res textures, rendering of shadows/light pools in correct perspective, correct animation speed, noclip cheat, and more!

This was an unfinished project to recreate Ultima Underworld 1 on modern operating systems (e.g. Win32, Linux or MacOS), using the original game files. Ultima Underworld II

Labyrinth Of Worlds - Source Port
This was an unfinished rewrite of Ultima Underworld II for modern architectures while trying to keep the feel and spirit of the original masterpiece intact. The tech demo allows you to walk (and jump) around all the Underworld II levels and worlds, has all NPCs and most monsters. You also get to see and manipulate all the dynamic objects of the game, and peek inside containers. The paperdoll has been implemented, too, and lets you access your inventory as well as wear/wield armor and weapons. It is now possible to converse with the various NPCs. While not all the conversations work correctly (or at all) most do for the most part and it is now possible to actually understand the storyline. :) NPCs are also able to give items.

D1X - OpenGL Source Port
D1X is a modification of the Descent 1 source including Win32 and Linux support, hardware OpenGL acceleration, and UDP/IP networking. One of the best versions can be downloaded from the D1X page of Jeremy Stanley. It is called D1X 1.43 and it works also in Windows XP. This patch has the advantage that you can freely choose the screen resolution, not only the usual ones up to 1024x768.

Doom 2

Action Doom - ZDoom Total Conversion
This is meant to try and bring back the run and gun feeling from the old 2D shooters like Contra and Metal Slug. In the tradition of such games there are no bullet weapons, only projectiles. And just like Contra every enemy and subsequently you, all have but one hit point, aside from bosses and mini bosses. To make the game feel more 2D and less frustrating, you will never be attacked from behind, and the level is entirely linear. Action Doom featured several first and never before seen Doom tricks using the ZDoom engine. In the second level, the player is confronted with three separate paths to take. One path led on a high speed boat chase which allowed the player to manually control the boat and navigate a river dodging rocks. The third level featured what was to later become the first of a series of ACS mini games: Andrew "Linguica" Stine was responsible for the Doom Racer arcade machine, which was a parody of Rad Racer. In terms of length, it has four levels, with an optional fifth level if played on the "Contra" setting. The WAD's gameplay and shelf life are expanded by the inclusion of five separate paths to take each with their own unique theme; however, none of them have any impact on the ending. It also features six new songs all created by Julian Aubourg.

Aeons of Death - Partial Conversion for ZDoom
Probably the weirdest AND most ambitious Doom mod out there. Through clever spawning scripts, it randomly replaces all enemies and items in any given level (almost all maps supported) with equivalent but randomly chosen items from the history of the FPS genre. A shotgun zombie may be replaced by a crazy old coot from Redneck Rampage, or an uzi-toting demon ninja from Shadow Warrior, for instance. Perhaps even 2d-ified versions of Quake and Quake 2 enemies! There are hundreds of enemy types, and almost as many weapons. It's relatively well balanced, though, and is in active development.

Alien Vendetta - Total Conversion
One of the best "Megawads" (32-level episode) for Doom 2 and rather new (released at the end of 2001). The levels are partially interesting (harder than the originals). However, in particular levels 15 and 20 are not necessarily fantastic (in my opinion).

Batman Doom - Total Conversion
A total replacement of DOOM 2 characters plus a few more (20 new characters). 25 new levels with hundreds of new textures + 7 interlevels. This has incredible new physics not seen in any other wads plus 9 new weapons and 28 new superb music pieces.

BGPA Missions: Liberation - GZDoom Total Conversion
Everything about BGPA exudes quality, it's perfectly themed and all the settings mesh well: beaches, trenches, forests and enemy bases. Each level has a set of objectives that must be accomplished, and you will be helped along by other members of the resistance. You will get to man mounted mini guns, destroy bridges, steal enemy information... as well as slaughter hundreds of Incan soldiers. Chosen - ZDoom Total Conversion
Wandering around the eight or so levels in Chosen you will be hard pressed to find even one stock Doom sprite, texture or even a flat. The entire project takes place in an Egyptian setting and everything from the new music to textures and Egyptian themed monsters and sprites convinces you of this. There is an amazing boat ride that looks incredible and the weapons are all cleverly original including arrows and hatchets that stay once they've hit. The enemies range from generic archers to the final showdown with an enormous snake who's tail drags along behind him in a very inventive hack of the Zdoom engine. Chosen easily ranks high this year (2004) as one of the shining stars released, as well as a welcomed addition to a long impressive history of Total Conversions in the veign of Aliens and Batman.

City Of The Damned & Apocalypse - ZDoom & Updated GZDoom Total Conversions
Doom meets Blood, with a lot of survival horror elements, and no small amount of puzzle solving and exploration. It may only be a single map, but it's gigantic, and you'll be doing a lot of exploring and working things out. The only downside is a slightly lackluster final boss battle. The successor called "The City of The Damned: Apocalypse" is a ZDoom map featuring resources from the Monolith game "Blood", this time featuring dynamic lights and other nifty sourceport additions in GZDoom. Expect a moody, dark and scary city filled with zombies, cultists and evil demons. In contrast to the first TCOTD, TCOTD:A is not just a Doom wad with Blood textures, it's actually a total conversion, where you will find new enemies, new weapons and a rather unique "sandbox" gameplay. Of course, there are a lot of locked doors and blocked passages, which require finding keys and solving puzzles, but you can move in the city and even around it (and the territory around it is quite large itself) rather freely. It's your choice whether you want to look around the houses, visit the cemetery, go deeper in the city, or walk around the mansion and the church located outside the city walls. Multiplayer was later added in v1.2.

Cold as Hell - GZDoom Total Conversion
A more survival-horror take on Doom, set in the 1950s at an arctic base where things go to hell pretty quickly. Large and linear, with some nice features like a wounds/bandaging system. The wad features custom weapons, a reloading system, a bleeding system (where the player is losing his health constantly when it drops below a certain ammount), one large hub of about 15 maps, connected together, with the ability to travel between them; new enemies, an involving story with a certain plot twist, notes to read and information to learn before you can move on with your mission. One could think of it as either Silent Hill or Resident Evil with Medal of Honor or Call of Duty. In November of 2008, Cold as Hell: Special Edition was released. Visual effects were upgraded to take advantage of new features in GZDoom. The snow, which had caused numerous problems in the original release, was replaced with the author's weatherFX2 weather system, which used a much more streamlined and user-friendly approach to creating the snow effects than in the previous version. The weapons code was completely re-done, and many improvements were added to gameplay elements. In addition to the bug-fixes and gameplay enhancements, the storyline was re-written slightly, and new voice acting was recorded by several members of the ZDoom community to fill in details of the plot that were previously unexplained.

Deus Vult II - ZDoom Total Conversion
Some consider this to be the best wad ever made. The planning of this project rivals that of the Manhattan project. Converted Doomer carefully planned each fight and designed the levels that are choreographed, if you will, to make the fights as interesting and varied as the environment itself. DVII's brilliant design takes the player from location to location, slowly building a story told in the maps. You begin in a secret research lab and journey to Japan, Egypt, Outer Space, Hell, and even Minas Morgul in your quest to defeat the Demonic invasion of earth. Words cannot do justice to the beauty of this wad, but to put it in simple terms: If you do not play this wad, the alleged baby Jesus will kill a kitten. This wad is 100% Chuck Norris approved.

Epic - Total Conversion for zDoom/GZDoom/PrBoom Plus
You don't often see Egyptian-themed WADs like Epic, and I sure as hell wouldn't mind seeing more of them if they were the same quality as this. Trying to make a set of Egyptian-themed single player levels with the same level of quality as Epic would make most mappers break down and cry. As typical with Eternal's maps, Epic oozes out more action than you can throw a stick at, and I'll be damned if MAP05 didn't live to the title of this WAD, because goddamn is it effin huge, and well... epic, obvious pun aside. There's also some really cool usage of Boom features, and creative use of flame torches to simulate run-down cars being caught on fire; isn't that a cool enough r reason to check out Epic? It has 5 levels and requires a Boom compatible port like Zdoom 2.2.0.

The entirety of Doom 1 Episode 1 remade using every feature of the ZDoom engine. Levels are long and involving, with tons of new areas inbetween the familiar looking rooms. Legacy of Suffering - Total Conversion for GZDoom
We all know that the Doom movie was terrible. So when this mod based on that movie is refreshing to find that it's one of the best Doom mods. The coolest gun in the game is the quadruple barrel shotgun. It has nine brand new maps, Coop and DM modes available, SkullTag - Invasion mode (Demo), new weapons, smarter monsters, new visual effects and high-def textures. LoganMTM sets up a genuinely creepy atmosphere through use of ambient noises, spooky sountrack, and good use of lighting effects. This mod definitely shows its influences from Doom 3 and Quake 2. There are quite a few cheap scares a la Doom 3, but it totally works for the mood. The gameplay style of this mod is a mixture between invasion and slaughter, and easily has provided me with some of the most action-packed gunfights ever in a Doom mod. The addition of new enemy AI makes the bad dudes a bit more tricky and unexpected. Overall a well rounded, scary and atmospheric map set.

Marine Doom - Total Conversion
Marine Doom is a project of the Marine Corps Modeling and Simulation Management Office (MCMSMO) and was the first time a computer game was used for military training purposes. MCMSMO adapted the game Doom II for training four-man fire teams. The game teaches concepts such as mutual fire team support, protection of the automatic rifleman, proper sequencing of an attack, ammunition discipline and succession of command. Doom II's characters have been replaced by Marines and enemy soldiers, and real-world representations have been used to create backgrounds that reflect real-world tactical situations. The game's combat environment includes buildings, bunkers, holes, berms, tactical emplacements, concertina wire, etc. The terrain can include ditches, hills and other small features. Players use digitized images of M16A1 rifles, M249 squad automatic weapons and M67 fragmentation grenades against enemies in a variety of terrain and building configurations. Simulations can be configured for specific missions, e.g., rescuing American hostages from an overseas embassy. Digitized embassy floor plans can be incorporated for use in training for rescue missions. Doom supports four players on a network. Each would receive a text file that specifies training objectives and provides information on potential enemy and friendly units. Each member has a different view of the battlefield on his screen. Observers would view an overhead schematic of the battle site on a mapping module. The team leader would pause a simulation at any point to evaluate a phase of the operation. System requirements: Doom II version 1.9, Dehacked 3.0 and the marine1.wad file.

Paranoid - GZDoom Total Conversion
This is an 8-map hub for GZDooM. It is a Half-Life mod with new enemies (including new enemy behavior with DECORATE), several new weapons (i.e., new behavior, not just replacement graphics), models, graphics, menus, skyboxes, and much more. In the role of Dr. Rolf Bellmer, you will explore previously unseen areas of the Black Mesa Facility. With true 3D architecture integral to the design of the maps and the whole theme being very much in the style of the original Half-Life, Paranoid seeks to capture a great deal of the feel of Half Life-like gameplay but in the Doom engine. You'll explore scientific laboratories, storage warehouses, water treatment facilities, cavern & canyons, etc. As you move from objective to objective, you will return to some maps you've previously visited. Along the way you'll be assisted by an unobtrusive hint/message system that can be called-upon via strategically-placed walkie-talkie radios. Most areas are designed to have a realistic look and design, with a multi-storey office building, a multi-storey prison facility, railway bridges, cafeteria, toilets, etc. The gameplay involves some friendly non-player characters, scripted fighting between alien and human enemies, and a fair amount of running & gunning.

Phocas Island 2 - Total Conversion for GZDoom
Using the superlative modifier "best" is certainly a strong word to use when describing anything, especially when it is as as subjective as a game. Phocas Island 2 certainly is not Doom; it is more akin to a first person Sierra adventure game if anything. Attaining the title of "best" is no easy feat when you are competing against names such as Batman Doom, RTC, Scythe 2, Suspended in Dusk... among many others often touted as "best". It just feels otherworldly, something highly regarded when looking for interaction with a game. There is no "Doom" in it; in fact, there are hardly any FPS elements in the game. The play is divided into an adventure game style where you must locate objects and places across the map and solve a number of tasks and puzzles to advance the story and escape the island. You'll visit breathtaking and extraordinary locales, like a hollowed out tree stump and a forest with a brilliant canopy overhead, underground mushroom caves, and ancient ruins. The puzzles are challenging but not impossible, and there is a real sense of accomplishment when you complete a task or find a new item.

The last dozen maps are not only breathtaking for the sake of the wad itself, but all maps that have been made. Overgrown bases covered in vines and weeds, vast gothic cathedralesque locales, and sinister hellscapes are just a few of my favorite themes. The last few levels of this megawad are beautiful. Some may be turned off by the Hell Revealed style gameplay towards the end, but remember, monsters can be turned off as well. Do yourself a favor and play Scythe 2 now, if you haven't already. And if not, what the hell is wrong with you? Followup: In 2009, Erik Alm completed the final 3 maps that were missing from this build, and various bug fixes. Simplicity - ZDoom Total Conversion
Simplicity bridges the gap between enhanced levels with the aid of modern engines, and the simple gameplay that made Doom so addicting. The title, Simplicity, comes nowhere close to describing Agent Spork's masterpiece, as these levels are anything BUT simple. Simplicity's architecture is phenomenal, and has that special touch that lets you know it's a SporkMap(tm). Transparency is used to gorgeous results, slopes are used but integrated as to feel natural, and several new monsters make simplicity feel like an official Doom addon. Too often when a wad has "Requires ZDoom" I brace myself for particle fountains and ugly on screen messages from , but AgentSpork has managed to seamlessly integrate the power of ZDoom with the "simplicity" of the underlying Doom engine. Coupled with one of the most creative secret levels conceived for Doom, Simplicity is easily one of the best. Ultimate Simplicity is a megawad comprised of 3 episodes, including 30 maps. It is essentially an overhauled version of the original Simplicity, with vast improvements made overall.

Suspended in Dusk - Partial Conversion
A set of four levels created by Espi, he has squeezed every last ounce of what the Doom engine is capable of to give us this masterpiece. Sliding doors, 3D spacecrafts, blown open walls, floating crates... this sounds like a checklist from a JDoom or ZDoom mapset, but you would be wrong to assume so. Its largest saving grace is the plethora of textures and new artwork. It's no surprise that a map by Espi would feature breathtaking visuals, but it's impressive just how well they mesh with the already available stock Doom textures. Creeping along platforms that appear to be "suspended in dusk" and rising above bottomless chasms with broken pipes hanging around you is an experience I cannot describe; you must experience this wad for yourself.

This megawad was created by G.W., originally intented for Boom compatible ports. It features: 3D water & lava, 3D bridges, OpenGl lightings, Boom features, FraggleScripting for the third episode. The first levels are quite simple, but, as you progress, maps become more and more complex, more and more puzzling, longer and longer. Anyway maps don't ever lack puzzles, which gradually turn trickier and trickier and more and more interesting.

These are Wolfenstein missions ported to DOOM II, creating what is essentially an improved and updated Wolfenstein. Each scenario is painstakingly recreated as a DOOM II WAD, complete with all the Wolfenstein textures, objects, sounds, and enemies. The result is a total conversion, a complete Wolfenstein experience which takes full advantage of the DOOM engine. There are even ambient sounds. In addition to recreating the original missions, brand new scenarios such as Operation: Arctic Wolf (considered the best pack), Operation: Rheingold, and the Astrostein Trilogy were created which go beyond the original scope and concept of Wolfenstein.

Marathon

Aleph One - Frontend for running M1, M2, MI and scenarios.
Marathon is a three-part game series for the Macintosh computer published by Bungie Software (who later went on to make Halo), consisting of Marathon (1994), Marathon 2 (1995), and Marathon Infinity (1996). They are first-person shooter puzzle games with Doom-like graphics, set in a scifi universe dominated by deviant computer AIs and (unlike Doom or Quake) Marathon was ahead of its time, having an immersive plot ran through the series of games. The engine sports an impressive physics model that allowed grenades to arc through the air and the player to waft gently across wide crevices in low-grav maps (revolutionary, as Quake wasn't released for another year and a half). The mod (called scenarios) community was so active that Bungie, the game's makers, sat up and took notice, releasing professional tools publicly so that the users could create their worlds with even greater ease. Only the Marathon 2 game was ever ported to Windows 95. On January 17, 2000, Bungie Software released the source code of the MacOS version of Marathon 2. Since then the game has been enhanced and extended, under the name of "Aleph One", by a team of developers on the Internet. Two of the biggest improvements to the game so far are the addition of OpenGL rendering and a built-in scripting language. On its own, it's not useful since it doesn't have a game world (a mod "scenario" in Marathon terms) - it's just a runtime. You need to download scenarios files to work with it. The individual games Marathon, Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity can all be considered scenarios and run on Windows through Aleph One. In contrast to modern games where you first install the game, then install a series of scenarios and finally select the active scenario from within the game, with older games such as Marathon (and hence, Aleph One) you actually replace the game's original scenario files with the files of the scenario you want to play. Now that hard drives are huge, it's practical to have one copy of Aleph One for each of the scenarios you want to play. If you use it to play M1, M2 and MI, you'll probably have three installs of Aleph One side by side.

There's fifty-two new levels, some revisiting familiar locations from the original Marathon trilogy. Over six hundred fifty new high-resolution textures, including a dozen original landscape textures, from a variety of human and alien environments. Eight all new weapons, many of which must be scavenged from your defeated enemies. Over a dozen tracks of original music, including many remixes of your favorite tracks from the original Marathon. Sounds & Total Texture Enhancement Packages - Aleph One Addons
The Sound Enhancement Package v1.0 contains the following features: - New Sounds! Including more sounds per class and the 'Lost BoB' sounds (only the nice ones though). Many new sounds are just modified original Marathon sounds, like pitch changes or other effects. - Improved sounds: Sound settings have been improved and many sounds have been converted into a higher quality. - Stereo effects added: Some of the ambience and random sounds have been modded and converted into stereo sound files. These are: the Creak, Siren, Loon and the Surface explosion sounds.
The Total Texture Enhancement Package v3.0 has all the textures from Marathon: Infinity, Marathon 2: Durandal, and M1A1, now all in 24-bit 512 x 512 high-res versions! (absolutely every single one of 'em). Very easy to install because it simply replaces the old texture enhancement pack by just dragging the files. Now, if you got the latest version of Aleph One and a nice video card then this is what you need to play Marathon at it's best! Because these textures are such a high-quality (millions of colors) they will also slow Aleph One down in performance, if you got a low-end Mac you may want to give Aleph One more memory. Also, this package requires at least 32mb of VRAM to run properly.

Marathon Evil, Marathon Fell, Marathon Red - Marathon Infinity Scenarios for Aleph One
These classic scenarios have all been converted to run on Aleph One. Marathon Fell has 35 solo levels and 5 different endings. The work of predominately one person, Fell was an extremely playable, engrossing scenario. This is Fell 1.2 with 11 new levels added to the end.
Marathon Red creates bleak levels with many new monster enemies creating one of the scariest playing sensations ever at the point of its release.

Rubicon X - Aleph One Addon
This continues the story of Bungie's Marathon trilogy. First released as Marathon:Rubicon in 2001, four years in the making, Rubicon was the largest Marathon scenario project ever created. To give some sense of the magnitude of this scenario, Rubicon featured: 360+ new textures, over a dozen new characters, tons of new scenery, 8 new weapons, and more solo levels than any other Marathon scenario to date...all wrapped into a nonlinear plotline that can be traversed in any number of ways, featuring different endings based upon a player's choices over the course of the game. Randy Reddig, the texture artist and a mapmaker for Bungie's original Marathon Infinity, called Rubicon's visuals "...the nicest I've ever seen come out of Marathon." If you've ever played any Marathon game, Rubicon will reignite your love for the series. Rubicon X is a complete overhaul of the original. It features all new high-resolution artwork, new and updated maps, and enough surprises to feel like a whole new game.

Duke Nukem 3d

Starship Troopers - Total Conversion
19 months, it took, to finish this excellent addon. For fans of Duke or the film Starship Troopers it's a must play, for those that loved both it's a blessing. Before you jump into the game you must know that this TC is meant for pros. The lowest degree of difficulty is "normal". In the first mission one must escape from a severely damaged spaceship. There are no opponents there yet. However, some puzzles and falling dangers remain, as well as explosions - and also sometimes a dead end if you rush through it :o). If one has reached the rescue capsule, you find yourself soon having to make a forced landing on a planet. Then after fighting through to a rendezvous point you find yourself on a base and receives also in the Command-Center his first order. One discovers by wandering around the base various things, numerous guards and also usable protection. I have not played through the addon even yet, thus you must be patient until someone contributes a review, but as far as I can judge this, one can not go wrong with trying this out. It may edge out Platoon as the best Duke addon ever.

Jonof's Duke 3D Port & High Resolution Pack - Source Port & extras
Jonof's port is one of the most popular allowing native Windows and Linux ports using a Build engine port, OpenGL rendering support, true-colour textures support. It aims to present Duke3D as closely as possible to the original game while adding optional features to expand the possibilities of the game. The high-resolution pack is put together by Pdr "Parkar" Karlsson. this is a massive 80-meg file with hi-res textures and 3d-models by many authors. It comes with the latest version of Jonof's source port. The results are mixed. Some of the textures look very good - some bad or unfit - some just don't mix with each other. 3D-Models are mostly good although many are a bit cartoonish and colorful, and may cause some lag even on modern computers. Don't try to launch it via the normal Jonof Duke3D exe - the installation creates a separate exe for the hi-res pack. It includes all hightile textures, models, maphacks, and hacked game.con files released so far (both 1.3d and atomic) with easy to use installer.

Final Doom

Plutonia 2 - Total Conversion
Does this epic project need an introduction? The only way you could have missed the release of this 32 map sequel to the original Plutonia Experiment is if you've been living under a rock for the better part of this last year. Created by an impressive team of mappers, modders, and musicians, this wad not only lives up to the high expectations set by its predecessor for both aesthetics and gameplay, it exceeds them. True to its predecessor, Plutonia 2 is a wad meant for skilled Doom players who are interested in a good, challenging wad. However, unlike the original Plutonia Experiment, Plutonia 2 is also highly enjoyable to the more casual Doom player, provided that you play on a lower difficulty setting. Also unlike its predecessor, Plutonia 2 contains some large maps that can take quite a while to finish. At the end of it all is one of the most epic and memorable boss fights in any megawad yet. Also, Plutonia 2 also maintains the aesthetic feel of its daddy while, thankfully at the same time, gives the player a more detailed environment, providing the player a rich atmosphere to go along with the rich gameplay experience. With such an epic gameplay experience as this, why wouldn't anyone love this wad?

Prydon Gate - Total Conversion
Prydon Gate is a hack and slash action adventure role playing game similar in game play to some giants in the history of games such as Diablo. The game play may seem strikingly similar to that game, but it has quite a few unique twists that should keep the game interesting and repayable numerous times. The Curse of Korweh Map Pack takes place in the far reaches of the east part of Prydon, in a desert known as "Korweh", the home of the god Kor. Thousands of years ago this place was a haven for the Namus people who believed in Kor as their creator, but they began to die out - due to a mysterious curse placed on their temple of worship. The Dark Age is a new map pack by the ELF Team. This campaign takes place in the land of Doraith, which is in the midst of a terrible dark age. Of the four cities of Doraith, El Ray was destroyed years ago, Pen-Y-Caio has been recently conquered by Goblins whilst Rycloth and the capital city Careg-Y-Bardd are surrounded and only the bravest adventurers dare cross between them.

It also introduced server support for skins (a two-dimensional graphic that is stretched over the three-dimensional wire frame of a character). fQuake is the sequel to eQuake, which was the first All-In-One QuakeWorld package to hit it big within the QuakeWorld scene. fQuake is an open–source project that aims on making a perfect QuakeWorld package containing anything beginners as well as veterans need to play QuakeWorld on a competitive level.

Quake Fan Movie Creations
Quake done Quick - Speedrun Movies This is a project to record runs of multi-level sequences from Quake (and Ultimate Doom, Doom 2 and Quake 2) in the fastest times possible. Any short-cut except cheating is approved of, and Nightmare difficulty is assumed. These speed-runs are refilmed to produce movies to download and watch. Tools have also been written to assist in all these activities. Scourge done Slick, a run through Quake Mission Pack #1, is by common consent one of the best Quake movies yet released. Another popular favourite is Quake done Quick with a Vengeance, a 12:23 run all the way through Quake.

Tenebrae - Source Mod
Tenebrae is a modification of the quake source that adds stencil shadows and per pixel lights to quake. Stencil shadows allow for realistic shadow effects on every object in the game world. Per pixel lighting allows you to have fine surface details correctly lit. There are a hefty load of particle effects, reflective water, a flashlight, and flares. These are essentially the same algorithms as used by the new Doom III game. Beware tough, it is a system hog. The system specs needed to run it are a p3/600 with a Ge Force grade video card or better.

Strife

SvStrife - Source Port
SvStrife is a win32 source port based on the Doom-Based engine game, Strife. The oringinal source code to Strife was lost, however, everything was done to make the behavior the same as the oringinal game had. This port is based upon the Prboom source port. Even though SvStrife isn't 100% playable, many features has been successfully implented. Some of the features of SvStrife include SeHacked support, AI improvements, improved video options, menus, movement clipping, and more realism. SvStrife is a single-player game so multiplayer games will most likely not work.

Tomb Raider

Glidos - 3DFx Glide Emulator
When Tomb Raider originally came out in 1996, it's 3D engine rendered images using software. As 3D graphics cards started to appear, Tomb Raider was updated to be used with the most popular card, 3DFx (now bought up by nVidia), and they used a proprietary technology called Glide which had an enabled runtime developed which allowed the game to be played in higher resolutions and with texture filtering under the DOS system. Glidos, allows old Glide based games to run under Windows along with VDMSound, a Sound Blaster emulator for DOS games. It also supports Tomb Raider Gold:Unfinished Business, Blood, and Descent II.

Nude Raider - Graphic Mod
Lara Croft was the first game mascot to break the cutesy cartoon mold yet achieve mainstream recognition but her awesome boobage also inspired a glut of "sexy" heroines and pandering advertisements. The Nude Raider patch, an extremely popular game patch made in 1997, features Lara nude. Nude Raider fan sites such as Naturally Lara often feature screen shots of Lara in naked game play action. In response to the patch, more upstanding Tomb Raider fans, including many fans in the Tomb Raider Ring, have taken to posting "Nude Raider free" banners on their sites. These fans affect a more romantic stance towards Lara. The first two Patches (for Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider 2) were programmed of "“nude.raider@fx.fr"” of French origin.

Tomb Raider Xtra - Texture Mod
The original Tomb Raider (and in fact all the TR games up to TR5: Chronicles) used simple textures based on 64x64 pixel squares. With Glidos, there is the ability to read and display new textures, up to four times more detailed than the originals up to 256x256 pixel squares. This means the detail of the original Tomb Raider game can be increased to improve it's overall visual appeal. This retexturing project is in its early stages but looks promising.

Rage Against The Machine - Partial Conversion
RATM or simply ‘Rage’, is a combined effort by select members of the Blood community to create a Blood campaign worthy of remembrance and worthy of honouring, and hopefully complementing, the Blood title and its legacy. Rage’s objective is to expand on the Blood universe, adding a little innovation where necessary, while not compromising the spirit of the original title’s unbeatable action, breathtaking atmosphere and overwhelming fun factor. So far, Episode 1 of the campaign has been released, but the rest are coming up. All the Single Player maps included in this campaign are fully optimised and compatible with Bloodbath, Co-operative and Team Mode Play. Difficulty levels are also implemented. There's also the added bonus of including custom music that fully captures the essence of the original’s soundtrack. The story is told through a series of gripping, live-action cinematics played at the opening.

This has most of the graphics in Jedi Knight, recreated from scratch, to bring it up to more current visual standards. All the sprites have been updated, as well as the sabers, and sky textures. The multiplayer character selection has been extended to include previously unplayable characters, such as maw and 8t88.

In these 5 levels, there are some excellent designed and original outdoor sections to start and finish. In between it's a more normal Q2 style, with other good designs - and a great skybox - though some plainer sections. Gameplay is solid throughout, and well balanced in this version, though it could be more inspired, however good exploration and secrets keep it interesting throughout.
