This is a narrative adventure game that originates from popular tabletop RPG Vampire: The Masquerade. It takes place in an alternative reality called World of Darkness, where many supernatural creatures secretly live alongside humans. The game lets us play as a young vampire, who only recently has been turned into vampire. At first, he isn’t sure what’s happening to him, but eventually he starts feeling a growing hunger and soon is terrified by changes that occur to his body. The world of Vampire The Masquerade is a complicated place, filled with many clans of bloodthirsty beings that follow complex rules. Playing the part of a young vampire lets us naturally discover this strange reality. It's a classic narrative adventure, meaning players focus on following the story and making decisions. What makes it stand out is the creator’s unique approach to the genre. The game imitates operating system of modern smartphone, through which we learn the plot and contact other characters. All of this to create an illusion that players really are the heroes of the story. The game is very nonlinear, as players’ decisions have strong impact on the storyline. The protagonist can desperately cling to his humanity, become an inhuman beast or try to find some equilibrium between these two extremes. This promotes going through campaign a few times to discover all versions of the story. |
