Artificial Life: School World [J] Inter Scape Ltd. / Pioneer LDC Inc. 1993

An ambitious work by Daizaburo Harada, who was a companion to Haruhiko Shono, formerly of Radical TV [Japanese video-art group] plus Greg Bear and an interview with Ryuichi Sakamoto. It is a biological breeding program based on Artificial Life theory. When you explore the planet, collect the creatures there, adjust the amount of light in the breeding machine and breed it, a mysterious insect that you have never seen grows while undergoing several stages of evolution. The collection is done on a CD-ROM, and the breeding uses a program installed on the hard disk. Books are also included in the package. It's quite difficult to breed and often die, but once you get the hang of it, you'll quickly reach the final evolution. It's a unique work, and the material is interesting, but the drawback is that it's easy to get bored.
