What Makes You Tick? Matthias Kempke (Deaddog) 2007

This is a free point and click adventure game in the vein of old Lucas Arts games inspired by The Sandman ("Der Sandmann"), a story written in 1817 by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It was built using the "Lassie" freeware authoring engine and features beautiful visuals and atmosphere. Young Nathan has been sent by his university to deliver an important message to a retired professor. We are not initially told how or why the university knows this information, but the professor's life is apparently in danger, and Nathan must find him. He is sent to the professor's last known residence somewhere in the countryside, and he soon learns that he is not the only one seeking the professor. This is a very straightforward and accessible adventure game. It is not super difficult, making it very well suited to the casual adventure gamer. It has a very simple interface. There are 3 actions that you can take in relation to any object/person within the game, denoted by an interface of 3 icons (a mouth for talking, eyes for examining, and hands for using/picking up things). Hint: you can use the mouth icon on inanimate objects, for example to blow out a candle or to consume food or drink. The production values are very well done and manage to create a wonderful early 1900's atmosphere. The game is almost more enjoyable to look at than play, and the music is fantastic. In July/2015, a voiced English & Spanish version along with formerly commercial sequel A Stitch In Time with German subtitles was released in a free pack.
