same problem here, also win xp sp3. i downloaded both versions (2cd and 3cd), same thing, can't open, crash to desktop.

2cd version is slightly upgraded (windowed/full screen selection) and patched, but both versions need Java to work.

2cd version has Java installer included and there's a warning ...

I just downloaded all files, tested them in winrar, and extracted MDS and MDF files of Risen.
I'm using DAEMON Tools Pro Advanced Edition v 4.10.0218.0 with SPTD v 1.79.
I can't mount Risen image. Getting this message:

DAEMON Tools Pro driver error: 0 - Unable to mount image. Invalid image ...

You mean Den's Appartament in the beginning of the game or when ? The first fix works ok as i entered the bar and walked out just fine.
Den's Apartment when you found Den's card , and Den's Apartment Key . You need to go there, because some important stuff is there, and fighting with Tarek .

After a dozen or so attempts I managed to enter and exit Aka's Bar .
I used software renderer and lowered screen resolution to the minimum (400x300 pixels). Then I tried to be as fast as possible in that wierd enviroment where movements were almost impossible.

As I expected, that's not the only bug ...
