Is Half-Life 2: Episode 1 a pure add-on?

I have it downloaded seperately, it runs from it's own file. Is it simply an add-on? Can I just move the needed files into my Half-Life 2 directory and run it from there, or is it more complicated than that?

I'd say it's more simple than that. With chance your version is standalone.
And why don't you test first and ask after, huh ?

Episode 1 & 2 are standalone products, and Episode 2 at least uses a different version of the Source engine.

I did little tinkering and found that I could run it from my HL2 directory, but it involved transfering a lot of files, more than just a single file like I hoped so I just saved it as a seperate game.

I also figured out that Eps.2 was some sort of upgrade because the avaliable versions of it are big, big files, an Iso I saw was 8+Gbs, that's way to big to simply be an add-on to HL2.

hl2ep2 is indeed 8gbs, and that's not even including the HL2 or Source materials packages which are totaling around 3gb

as a proud owner of an original Orange Box, i just can tell you how it is done the original (aka Steam) way: if you install Either Ep. 1 or Ep. 2, the base files for HL2 are also downloaded/installed. this way both Episodes 1 and 2 are smaller on their own, i think they take between 2 and 4 GB. of course, making a standalone "RIP" requires to include files from HL2 also, making it quite huge.

The version of Eps.1 I've got is a stand-alone RIP, it's only about 2.8Gbs. That's pretty reasonable considering that's with eveything expanded. Eps.2 is another story, there are no versions that 'small' floating around.
