Need Help Setting up a MULTI BOOT SYS
hi folks...
i want to set up a MULTI BOOT SYSTEM cause im sick of old games
not working correct or not working at all...
that system will contain of :
" -WIN XP incl.SP3 ( english )
and
-WIN 98 SE ( english too ) "
ok, so far so good.
i started creating a partition for WIN 98 SE cause XP is already installed...
so i made the partition giving it drive letter F: and 20 GB SPACE and choosing file system FAT 32
then reboot... after rebooting i format F: drive
then i inserted the WIN98 SE CD in DVD Drive clicked reboot and pressed DEL / ENTF....
once i was in BIOS i set the first boot device to G: my CD / DVD DRIVE
ok reboot again....
the PC checked the WIN9x CD asked me to boot from HDD or CD
i select
CD-ROM
ok so far so good... now im in the SETUP SCREEN that one with BLUE background you know what i mean i guess....
then i was going further like always but then the problem appeared..
the setup wants to format my C: drive where my winXP is installed... you see the problem i have is that i cant choose the F: drive i specially made for that purpose.... i cant choose another drive than C:
why is this happening ? i set up a MULTI BOOT OS years ago and back then i was able to select the DRIVE i want to install the second OS...
whats wrong ?
plz help me people.... but plz no suggestions.... what i need are answers from people who know what to do and who know what theyre talking about...
thx in advance
bye have a nice evening

Oh man.. I think we're in the wrong forum for this. But for a last time let's see:
Format your harddisk
C: (20GB) FAT32
D: (all?) NTFS
Install Windows 98 on FAT32 C: BEFORE installing Windows XP on the other drive. Doing so should save you lots of trouble I guess. When installing Windows XP chose NOT to update the old system and select NTFS D: as install drive.
Should work. Might have to change the boot.ini afterwards but the XP setup should set it up correctly.

This is much easier if you install Win98 first, then install WinXP. XP recognises Win98 and will work with it to multi boot.
Best way to do it is have two blank formatted partitions ready like dead-meat suggested. Make C: the first partition on the drive and install Win98 on that. Then install XP on the other.
But..
You can get Win98 installed and working after XP is already installed, I think I did it once when I was using Windows 2000.
I think the reason you can't select the partition you want, is because it needs to be a primary partition, and set as the "active" partition.
You can find out whether it is a primary partition in XP's "Computer Management" administrator tool.

And set it as the active partition using Windows 98's fdisk.exe.

Once you have it installed you will need to set the XP partition back to the "active" partition so you can boot from it again. Then edit the boot.ini in the root of the XP partition and add the new partition to the list. Then you will be prompted with the choice of which partition you want to boot from at startup.

Well, hurenBock, on normal install Win98 will replace MBR (with XP data), so it's better be installed before XP. There are ways to circumvent the issue but out-of-the-box user may find them technically difficult.
Also remember that Win98 is unable to handle HDDs larger than 120GB...
I suggest you spend some time on msfn.org.

mhh well you guys are right....... win9x has to be installed first.......
otherwise it wont work........
btw i wiped out my whole HD while i was trying to do this......
i made an partition like deadmeat said
FAT 32... 20GB
but all my other partitions used NTFS file format........
then when i was about to install win9x setup told me that it has to delete C DRIVE first i pressed ESC
but then i thought....... come on win9x has to be installed first so format C:
install win9x on it and afterwards install XP
okay drive C: started the format procedure......
and meanwhile i thought damn why does this take so long the partition is just 30 GB ( my old XP partition )
well, it wiped out my whole HD it formated the whole HDD i guess win9x couldnt detect the other drives cause they all used NTFS file format.....
man this sukks all my game images i collected are gone......and everything else too...of course.......
damnit...... all these ISOS i had theyre all gone.....
but after all i now have a MULTI BOOT OS lol
...... im still getting drivers for win98SE and XP
otherwise it wont work........

I hate to be a spoilsport, but I'm afraid this is not going to work as you've already at least partly overwritten your lost data....
Maybe for a next time (I hope not of course): immediately stop all activity on the disk in question, put it as a slave in another pc and then try to retrieve your data.
Please don't shoot the messenger....

It's really sad to hear your story, hurenBock. Take my condolences for the loss of your data.
Now some bitter words.
Remember what you said in the beginning:
The wrong thing was that no one explained you "whats wrong". And I am sorry for that.
Win98 refused to setup on your F: because it couldn't save its loader on first partition (which was not FAT). When you decide to leave your existing "NTFS" OS and add Win98, the case becomes too compicated for this forum. Solution involves third-party programs, editing, etc. So no one stepped forward with two-page guides covering all possible variations supported by cumbersome in-depth field tests. Hence no one bothered to answer you "why" and people just gave straight examples of how to do WinXP+Win98 easily. Of course, everyone implied that you wouldn't experiment on HDD full of important stuff. That's just a matter of common knowledge for anything partition-related.
Please don't take my post as some kind of accusation, it's more like a confession and a desire to understand what happened.
Scaryfun, thanks for quick support while we were stunned.
hurenBock, you'll still need spare HDD for proper recovery attempt.
P.S. I just don't realize why Win98 formatted the whole drive instead of only first partition. Didn't you have a dialogue or something? Perhaps the partition should've been prepared beforehand...

In order to make it remotely like what he said, you should have at least hidden all your NTFS partitions and made your 20GB FAT32 partition active. That would have made it look like C: for Win98...hurenBock wrote:i made an partition like deadmeat said

I haven't read this forum for a few days so what I have to say is too little too late. Nevertheless...
You have my sympathy hurenBock. By the time you read this you will have no doubt reinstalled everything.
Since you had already made a partition for Win98 it would have been better to copy the entire win98 folder from the CD to the drive and run the installation from there instead of installing directly from the CD. It would have avoided the installation program's desire to delete the partition and allowed you to add a "Msbatch.inf" file if you wanted.
However it is better if Win98 is installed first.
Secondly, if you are going to dual boot with Win98, consider installing Win XP on FAT32 so you can access files on your XP partition from Win98. Although there are third party tools to allow you to read NTFS from Win98, my philosophy is "the less junk that is installed, the better". Same goes for the secondary drives/partitions, FAT32 not NTFS, so long as the drive isn't too large.
I really don't know why people bother dual booting these days with second hand Pentium III computers selling so cheap. I bought a 1GHz PIII computer (no monitor) a couple of months ago with an Intel i815 motherboard, a 20 GB hard drive and 128MB of RAM for the equivalent of US$12.50. Yes it was eBay, local pickup, seller with a good track record. There is a problem with the floppy drive but I hardly use floppies anymore anyway so I don't care. Good as a backup computer and to play older games for years to come. I didn't need this computer but I really couldn't pass it up at that price.
With regards to your lost ISO's, as I mentioned before in another thread (which nobody commented on) back up those downloaded files. I say this for two reasons.
1. If one part of an archive goes missing from 4shared there should be a number of people around who have a backup in case the original uploader no longer has their copy.
2. In most cases the archives that have been uploaded are compressed about as much as possible. RAR or 7z files containing an image that has been made smaller as an ECM file. It's hard to find more efficient compression than that. I can usually burn about 7 standard sizes ISO's to a DVD in the form of downloaded archives. If you lose an ISO or it has been corrupted, you don't have to waste time and bandwidth redownloading it.
Having one computer is a lot of fun but if something goes wrong it is a source of aggravation. Having two computers doesn't double the aggravation, it cuts it in half because you have a backup to help solve your problems.
Sorry to be so longwinded but I knew this guy in his 60's at another forum who went out and bought a new computer every time he had a Windows problem. He would usually start by complaining about how he was having trouble with Windows Media Player, then complain his computer kept crashing, couldn't follow the instructions of the technical support people, lose all his downloaded files, then blame Microsoft and go out and buy a newer "better" computer. Six months later it would start all over again and he would buy another one. Last I heard he was on his third new computer in two years. It made me laugh.
