Unified Naming Scheme Across All LW Sites

Post by wergeond »

While browsing AdventureLegends, I found nearly all uploads came with obscured abbreviation
file names. This can be quite a mess as the collection accumulates. Why not choose a meanful, intuitive name?
Perhaps we should adopt a consistent naming covention across the entire LW site.

A viable scheme is to adapt the scene naming rules, with each words separated either by dots or
underscores depending on the uploaders free choice, like these:

The.Game.Title-LW
The_Game_Title-LW

Tags can also be added at the end to indicate the foreign language of the title or the property
of the upload, such as:
Some.Foreign.Game.GERMAN-LW
Foreign.Title.FINNISH-LW

If the game is in Clone format such as CloneCD or Alcohol 120, Clone tag can be added depending
on the media type:
A.Clone.of.the.Original.Media.CloneDVD-LW
A.Clone.of.the.Original.Media.CloneCD-LW

If the game is a rip, RIP tag can be appended:
A.Rip.of.a.Game.RIP-LW

And if the uploader chose not to be anonymous, the generic "LW" group name could also be replaced
by the uploader's member name:
My.Game.Upload-MEMBERNAME

Above all is my humble suggestions.
Thank you.

Just rename the files on your own time. The filenames of the archives are deliberately obscured, in addition some are password protected with the packed directory structure and filenames encrypted. I'd prefer it myself if all the uploaded files had obscured names and that they were password protected.

If these were hosted on private servers (that our members controlled) your suggestions would make sense. But we make use of publically accessible file lockers that we do not control and that necessitates some level of obscuring what is being spread.

As we use free file hosts... if we put the actual game title as the file name, they are much more likely to be removed due to copyright infringement.
