Re: Operation LW2Usenet - Backing up our uploads on newsgrou

After Free-Usenet stopped working for me early in the year, if I remember correctly, I tried XS Usenet. But even though in BinBar client it shows files completing, I never get files resulting in the folder. Not sure if files are too old to be on their server anymore? But why would they show completing then...
I think my only other alternative is to buy access for premium account for a month and grab whatever I need.

You can get a free trial with several usenet providers. You could prepare the NZB's of the data you want to download in advance and then download everything you need within the trial time.

Eweka offers a 7 day trial without any limits.

I signed up for usenet at newshosting on a Black Friday deal for $2.99US a month for 12 months. It has the highest retention at 4847 Days and unlimited downloads plus free VPN. I read that it works faster in North America as that's where their servers are. So, if you're in Europe or elsewhere then another provider might be better.
There's other deals like 3TB block for $15 if you feel you won't download enough to be worth a yearly commitment.

Stumbled on this - https://drunkenslug.com/register
This is one of the best indexers right now. Registration is open a few times a year. Free version allows 25 API hits and 5 Downloads per day.

Updates on this have been sparse in the past years, but I'm getting back on track. Having finished range A (1-9999) in 2021 and half of range B (10000-20000) earlier this year, I am now focusing on backing up the uploads made after 2020. This means that the oldest/historical uploads are covered and everything that was available when I crawled the site has been backed up. The uploads made in the past 2 years are almost only hosted on Mega.nz and are generally less prone to be offline. Still, there are a few hundreds of broken links for Mega uploads to take into account.

Because NZBKing was offline for a while, I wondered about the availability of the NZB files for this project. The other indexers don't have that much retention and the earliest backups from 2017-2018 can only be found on NZBKing. I cannot host the files on my server anymore so I figured I'd rather upload them in two packs, which are now available in the second post. This way, anyone who wants to download the backups doesn't have to rely on an indexer anymore.

Molitor, thanks again for your work!

XS Usenet will retire its free Usenet service as of January 1 2023:

Code: Select all

It is already not possible anymore to create new free accounts.

Amazing job! :D
Sometimes I search for a particular game backup and it doesn't come up and I'm not sure if they were just not on indexer anymore. Now, I will know for sure. So, thanks for the pack of nzb links!

No, I have made very little progress on this since 2022, I was busy with other stuff. The bulk of "historical" uploads (#1 - #10000) are already backed up and you will find them in the packs on the 1st page. All the uploads left to process are from 2020 to today, mostly hosted on Mega, much less a risk than 4shared.
I've only recently started to check updates and I have to catch up from upload #18000 to at least #24000, most stuff is still online.
