Ready-to-use VMs

Post by Molitor »

For old games that won't run on latest systems.
These VMs (except for Win 3.1) require VirtualBox.

Windows XP
Download VDI (627 MB): MEGA - 1fichier
Configuration: Windows XP Home Edition SP3, Default drivers, DT Pro Advanced 6.1.0.0484

Windows 98
Download VDI (64MB): MEGA - 1fichier
Configuration: Windows 98SE, VBE miniport driver (1024*768), Default SB16 driver

Windows 95
Download VDI (102MB): MEGA - 1fichier
Configuration: Windows 95 4.00.950 B, VBE miniport driver (1024*768), SB16 driver (v. 4.35.21)

Windows 3.1
Download (7MB): MEGA - 1fichier
Configuration: Windows 3.1 (installed from floppy), S3 864 1.41B5 (800*600, 256 colors) driver
  • This is not a VDI file. Windows 3.1 can run directly in Dosbox.
  • Dosbox 0.74 is included. Extract the content of the archive (not on the root of your system drive !) & run doxbox.exe.
  • Once you configured the CD-ROM/floppy emulation, go to the /WINDOWS directory & run WIN.EXE within Dosbox.

Installation
The VDI files are harddisk images created for VirtualBox. In order to use the files provided here, you need to first create a VM, then attach the VDI file to it.
  • Install VirtualBox.
  • Create a new VM with the New button, enter a VM name and set the amount of RAM.
  • Choose Use an existing virtual hard disk file, select the VDI file, accept, click Create. (Pic)
  • For Windows 95: Go to the VM settings --> System --> Acceleration, uncheck the Enable VT-x/AMD-v box. (Pic)
  • That's it. The VM can be started.
  • You can close the Microsoft Networking Login window that appears at startup (Win95/Win98).

I just checked out Windows 3.1 with some win16 games.
It is working fine, but I wonder about enhanced version.
Didnt play with DOSBox longer time, but it is maybe possible to:
a) set auto startup of Windows in DOSBox config file
b) set startup commands (mount c ., c:, c:\windows\win.exe) in windows shortcut (rest files put to extra folder so it would look cleaner)
Then extend Windows 3.1 with extra libraries which are required by many games (for example: Visual Basic).

Here is nice collection of Win16 games:
https://archive.org/download/630-window ... 0Games.zip
https://archive.org/download/530-more-w ... 0Games.zip

Most of them not work, probably because of DLL missing.
Probably Visual Basic libraries (VB*) should be enough.
Here is source of some DLLs:

I actually set up an automount section in Dosbox for my previous Win 3.1 packages (for Crusaders, Congo & Panic in the Park) because I knew what image files needed to be mounted, but for this current release I left the section blank. For a future update, I'm trying to figure out how to automount a specific disc image that is given by the user - in other words, if Dosbox can "guess" what is the image to mount. About the DLLs, I'll inquire myself about it.

I'm not sure if dosbox can do that. You may just have to give instructions for the end user on the file(s) to edit.

I tried making an automated mounting with user prompt and variables but it never turned to work. So yeah a commented .conf file would be simplier.

I know it's a year old conversation, but the end of the dosbox config file (can be command line specified to load a config other than the default) is the autoexec section where you can automatically execute commands at "boot" time (like @autoexec.bat for old farts like me)
you can just add "win" there like in the old days
