Mass Effect - opinions?

I've read that this is the best RPG to come along since Neverwinter Nights, any opinions?

Witcher is a RPG ,
Mass Effect is a arcade shooter with different paths controlled by the stiff dialog system

Really? It's a shooter, I've usually seen it catagorized as an RPG. Gamespot gave it a crazy rating of 9.7 or 9.8.

Playing it right now on my updated rig(C2D E8400/2GB PC6400 RAM/1Gb Radeon 4850). Seems fun, but looks like KOTOR with stripped down RPG system, also I don't like poor descriptions of inventory items(just remember Baldur's Gate, where unique items had their own history).

I did a detailed play thru several months ago, it has some remarkable features, nearly seamless quality character anmiations that are quite good, some of the best yet in fact, great level designs some of them and awesome ship interior for main ship. Overall i would say yes it is very simlar to KOTR and Jade Empre in the companion system, which only allows two slots. The story is quite good. Planetary exploration has its excellent moments when you discover artifacts but overall is a bit artifical and the story frankly is swallowed up at the end by the special effects ...i wanted to see more ships but you really only see the one main one and then lots in the distance so you never really get a feel for the fleets and types...

overall i would give it a 7, though it is an awesome cinematic spectable, reminds me a bit of the two star wars games there were basically vids with some choices, but much much better in quality.

The fighting and the weapons are detailed to a degree, and the aliens well done. Sound track is good.
