Clone CD Vs. Nero

Post by xariskop »

I have noticed that most uploads here are in clone cd image files. I always used nero (nrg) to make image or even converted them to nrg cause it just uses one file instead of four. But then i found this right here
http://forums.maxconsole.net/archive/in ... -4942.html
which mentions wrong sectors made by nero.
So far i haven't encoutered any problems - i've not tested them all - but should i consider leaving the clone cd format? Is there a serious problem that i'm not aware of?

As far as I know, Nero is not capable of copying protected CD/DVD's. That's why many images are ripped with CloneCD or Alcohol 120%.

Yes but with better compression, i know this 100% that's why i use it.
I have noticed the nrg has always smaller size from any other formats.

As a Mac owner I mostly tend to favour CloneCD/Alcohol images as it can cope with Hybrid Format, Extended CD etc which can´t be contended in a normal ISO. I´ve found quite a few games in combined Mac/PC format, ie Hybrid, here just by dl and inspect w Alcohol/CloneCD. And some research of course :)

Yes but with better compression

A nrg image is more like a iso+cue+wav
kind of an iso with audio tracks

Clone CD attempts to copy some of the more elaborate types of copy protection that use abnormal types of sectors on the disc. In theory a perfect copy this way does not require the game to be cracked.
Nero does not copy this type of information from the disc.
Clone CD only offers an advantage if you care about having a "perfect" copy that works without a crack.
Many games, especially older ones, don't use this kind of protection so there is no advantage in using Clone CD for them.
