FPS Year Summary 1990

Red Baron (d/l)
Wing Commander (d/l)
DragonStrike (d/l)

Red Baron This is an early Dynamix/Sierra World War I air combat simulator. There are several types of missions in the game: dogfight; scramble; patrol; balloon busting/protection; reconnaissance escort; and bomber escort/interception; and Zeppelin hunt. There were also recreations of historical missions.
Wing Commander This is the first in a series of space combat simulators interspersed with shipboard dialogs and 3D space combat. You sit in the cockpit and control the craft like roll, turn, up/down, afterburner, as well as fire guns and launch missiles. There are four different crafts on the Confed side, each with different flight characteristics and armament. You can also order around a wingman on each mission. It popularized the use of cutscenes in action games and its popularity even led to a movie being made based on it. Two mission packs were also released: The Secret Missions (d/l), The Secret Missions 2 Crusade (d/l). Floppy Images ISO Demo & The Secret Missions & The Secret Missions 2 Crusade - 3MB/3MB/3MB (d/l)(thanks to Maraakate).
DragonStrike was an unique Dungeons & Dragon derived rpg mixed with a flight sim that has you riding a dragon over a primitive fractal 3D landscape. You have a lance and the player's dragon can use its recharging magical breath to attack and can also attack with its claws if the dragon passes closely above enemies. The 20 missions include intercepting enemy dragons, destroying enemy ships and protecting the forces of good.

Conqueror (d/l)
Flight Of The Intruder(d/l)
Stormovik: SU-25(d/l)
Thunderstrike (d/l)

Conqueror is an early 3D tank action sim with a polygonal landscape. There's strategy involved in being able to switch between any tank in your troop. The terrain is uneven and capable of showing hills but only one section is shown at a time.
Flight Of The Intruder was a sim ahead of its time that features things that we now just take for granted like multiplayer, mission planner, multi-flight missions (with ability to switch plane during mission) etc. Command the US Naval Aviators over Vietnam. Take on MiGs, AAA, and SAM, and the unforgiving nature of carrier aviation. Configure each plane's loadout for your mission, plan your mission package, then fly your missions. Command multiple sections of planes and switch among them at will. When you're done, you can even try your hand at LANDING on an aircraft carrier.Floppy Images ISO Demo (d/l) (thanks to Scaryfun).
Stormovik SU-25: Soviet Attack Fighter simulator uses a true 3D engine, but the flight model is not 6DOF. Missions range from attacking tanks and troops to attacking bridges and other buildings. Includes three sets of missions (each set takes place in a year, from 1991 to 1993). A wide range of bombs and munitions are included (from cluster bombs to rockets to guns).Floppy Images ISO Demo (d/l) (thanks to Scaryfun).
Thunderstrike uses a non-textured polygon graphics engine for a futuristic low-flying contest in arenas against other ships on other planets. There's powerups and a quick transport system and you have to protect your own pyramids from drone attacks.

First Person Shooters

Beverly Hills Cop Tynesoft Computer Software [top]

Eddie Murphy became a star in the police film Beverly Hills Cop, and which spun off this game featuring four distinct sub-games, each of which can be practiced from the main screen in some versions. First Axel Foley visits a warehouse to shoot out some bad guys in a Green Beret-influenced sequence. The second level involves driving after 3 trucks full of weapons, and shooting them out one by one, Chase HQ-style. Avoid contact and stay on the road to complete this. Next you must cross the grounds of a mansion, shooting anyone who gets in your way. The final section is set within the mansion, and is first-person 3D though with wire-frame graphics, although with few movement angles and only one enemy on screen at a time.

Infestation Psygnosis Limited [top]

The Alpha 2 research colony on Xelos has been invaded by aliens, wiping out the crew and laying 167 of their eggs, all waiting to hatch into a lethal alien infestation. Superhero Kal Solar is the only one who can prevent a catastrophe, and that's where you come in. The game is viewed in 3D from Solar's perspective, with a full HUD built into his helmet showing direction, health and supplies. Other HUDs also allow you to check whether the current air is breathable (you have limited oxygen), as well as one built into your Jetpack. There are two movement modes, one of which allows you to pan the view and the other allows you to shoot. Objects have to be picked up and used, computers operated, and an infra-red kit located and used. To win the game you will have to destroy all the eggs, and then shut the compound down and escape in time. The threat of hatching, however, pales in comparison to the other hazards, with insectoid enemies, sentry droids, radiation leaks and pitch-black corridors to negotiate. It could well be considered an early example of survival horror, not least because it enforced careful use of limited resources. The game’s cloying, claustrophobic atmosphere was heightened by the restricted field of view from inside protagonist Kal Solar’s helmet; his steady, scratchy breathing would be the only sound effect you heard for long spells, and would grow progressively shallow when low on health. Players were made to feel more vulnerable still, occasionally forced to remove their helmet to preserve oxygen, or even turn off their suit’s power completely. It's an innovative 3D exploration / action game that was truly ahead of its time. It boasts excellent level design, neat 3D weapons and objects to find and use, and some creative aliens.

Roller Coaster Rumbler Subway Software, Tynesoft Computer Software / Hi-Tech Expressions, Inc. [top]

Nearly 5 years before Rebel Assault and other fully-rendered CD-ROM titles popularised the rail-shooter gameplay, Tynesoft used it for a game with an unusual setting. You are on board a roller coaster which has been layered with targets to shoot out. The roller coaster follows its natural path, swinging from side to side and up and down, while you aim a turret at the targets and shoot them out. After completing its cycle, the roller coaster reverses, moving through the same area moving backwards. A co-operative two player mode exists, in which each player controls a crosshair. Make sure to hang on as the ride turns.

Vaxine The Assembly Line / U.S. Gold Ltd. [top]

In this first person driver/shooter, the player must protect a body's base cells from attack by evil infecting cells. The field of battle is a toroidal grid on which your tri-colored half-sphere base cells sit awaiting your protection. The invading cells (also tri-colored spheres) attempt to bond together into groups and destroy your bases. You destroy the infecting cells by lobbing antibodies (also tri-colored spheres) at them. Hit an infector with the right color shot and it is destroyed. The catch is that you have a limited amount of each color of ammunition. Run out of a color and the game is over. The situation is also complicated by Spitters, enemies that appear and spew out new attacking cells if you take too long to complete a level.

Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters Atari Games Corporation / Domark Limited [top]

A fun action game with a zany sci-fi plot that recalls 40's "B" campy sci-fi flicks, this game from Tangen has a huge dose of action interspersed with colorful comic-book style cutscenes and animations. This has the player sent on a rescue mission to Planet X. The planet has been taken over by robots and it's up to the player to find and evacuate the remaining humans. It's a shooter similar to Gauntlet, only with an isometric viewpoint. The protagonist runs around the levels shooting robots, rescuing humans and picking up items. The player has 3 lives and 9 continue play credits.

Hoverforce / Resolution 101 Astral Software / Accolade, Inc. [top]

Hoverforce takes place in the year 2050 where enemies known as 'alterants' have taken control of the city by distributing mind controlling drugs. You play with a 3-D view from a hovercraft in an attempt to destroy all alterants and stop the drug runs they make. The story is slightly different in Resolution 101. This game is set in the USA in the city of Las Envegas. Crime is rife and law enforcement just cannot cope so in 2038 a new law, Resolution 101, was passed which allows convicted felons to be released from jail in return for tracking down and eliminating gangland bosses. The player takes the role of one of these 'Search and Destroy' criminals. They are given a Theta 4000 ground skimmer armed with a light machine gun and they play their way through a series of increasingly difficult levels. Each level starts with a meeting with the sheriff who names the new target. After that the player is in their skimmer patrolling the streets shooting things, not mind controlled alterants but the drug runner's henchmen and gangland minions (same sprites different names). The city of Las Envegas, is divided into four areas each of which is controlled by a separate drug runner. The during the course of the game's twelve levels the player must defeat each runner three times in order to finally kill them. The runners have minions who will attack the player as they pursue their quest for justice / freedom. As these are destroyed they leave behind cash and drugs that can be collected, the drugs must be collected as evidence. As a further complication the drug runner only makes a few runs through the city in each level so the player must collect the evidence and shoot them down before the last run is complete, otherwise the sheriff will be displeased and the player will lose a life. Around the city are three shops where the player can upgrade weapons, and repair shields or their skimmer.

Stellar 7 Dynamix Inc. [top]

This first game in the series was originally on the Apple II in 1983. This remake has a full-3D, flat-shaded polygon system and added flying enemies, a cloaking device, mines, jumping ability and end-of-level bosses. It combines furious action with resource management similar to the classic Spectre. Drive futuristic hovercrafts in missions against the evil warlord Drax and prevent him from-- what else?-- controlling the universe. It's fast and fun, although enemy ships could use a bit more brain. A later CD version featured digitized voices on all of the cut scenes instead of the opening scene only. The background music during the game could be played from any of the supported sound cards or from CD audio. The video modes supported were the same in both versions, however the disk version supported MCGA in 256 colors and the CD version supported MCGA in 4 colors. (The 4 color MCGA looked the same as the CGA version except a custom palette was used.)

Thunderstrike Millennium Interactive Ltd. [top]

This is a 3d spaceship shooter set in the year 2238, using a non-textured polygon graphics engine. It has futuristic low-flying contests in arenas against other ships on other planets. There's powerups and a quick transport system and you have to protect your own pyramids from drone attacks. As a pilot in the "Ground Defense Games", you must make your way through several arenas built on different planets. You can choose from four different ships, each with different properties (better/worse acceleration, top speed, or turning speed). When you enter the arena, you are given several pyramids that you must defend from robotic drones sent out to collapse them. In addition to defending your pyramids, you must destroy the spawning centers that spawn not only drones, but an array of robotic fighters to hunt you down. When you destroy a fighter, sometimes it will leave behind an upgrade pod (shield, turbo, power, or twin-fire). There are also tracks that you can latch your ship onto to travel the perimeter of the arena quickly. At the end of each round, your performance is reviewed, and if you did good, your ship is upgraded and you move on to the next round.

Simulations

Advanced Destroyer Simulator Futura [top]

This is a naval combat simulation set in World War 2. It was the first naval simulation to use real-time filled 3D graphics. Its style and mechanics are reminiscent of Epyx's Destroyer (1986). ADS simulates the H.M.S. Onslaught, a British destroyer of the O-class fitted with three cannon turrets, four torpedo tubes on port and starboard respectively, and a sonar to detect and track submarines. In ADS, the Onslaught is not part of a flotilla. There's no campaign, gameplay is mission-based and set in three scenarios with five mission each: The Mediterranean around Sicily, the English Channel between UK and France, and the North Sea coast of Norway. Objectives include seek-and-destroy assignments, patrols, convoy escorts, submarine hunts and blockade runs. Each scenario also offers an open “Delta” option where you cruise and hunt without specific objectives. You navigate the destroyer manually, in real-time and from a first person perspective, though with the help of a scenario map. ADS simulates ship combat as a close-quarter exchange of torpedoes and cannon fire. In proximity to enemy land bases, Stuka fighters can attack and must be shot down with the cannons. Submarines are tracked with the sonar and can only be attacked once they surface. Enemy vessels include freighters, tankers, torpedo boats, destroyers and cruisers. Most missions are time critical; in the course of the mission, it may be necessary to dock in allied ports for repairs, to refuel and restock on ammunition.

Airstrike USA / ATF II Digital Integration Ltd. / Spotlight Software [top]

This is an arcade action flight game, where you fly the ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) on various missions around the world. Missions include destroying enemy submarines, radars, aircraft, bases etc. In the game you watch your ATF from behind with an very simplified instrument panel at the bottom of the screen. It's DI's most arcade-ish sim ever, and still features DI's hallmarks of excellent flight models and details, despite the dumbed-down version of instrument panels and trigger-happy gameplay. Great graphics and missions make up for the lack of "sim" in this sim.

In a near future alternate reality, the Ultra War is fought between the two dominate races in the New World. The 'Mauler' is the latest technology - an Armored Fighting Machine capable of being lifted in and out of hostile territory by a fast Stealth Chopper, and armed with the most advanced weaponry science can devise. You command a single "Mauler" assault tank in one of a series of scenarios. These range from a railway ambush to escort duties and a raid on a riverside hideout. Before starting you must choose the right weaponry based on the mission briefing.

This is a World War I fighter plane simulator, where the player may fly fighter planes such as Fokker, Sopwith, Spad, and many other ones. The game allows split screen gaming for two players, cooperatively or competitively, with multiple 3D camera angle features. Missions involve shooting down enemy planes, while others focus on specific targets. The game includes a very unique feature for those who choose to use it: the ability to convert the dogfights to turn-based battles fought on a hexagonal map but still maintaining the 3D view in a frozen window.

Conqueror PMC / Rainbow Arts Software GmbH [top]

Conqueror is a polygonal isometric-view tank action/strategy game with an elaborate control system (emulating "real" tank controls on normal joysticks) and two-player possibilities by switching the controls to use one joystick each for gunner and driver. The goal of the game is generally to destroy all enemy tanks on the map using a preset squad of tanks of your own. The tanks on the player's side that aren't controlled by the player act on AI, but the player-controlled tank can be switched at will via an in-game map. Alternately, the player can use that map to direct tanks to other places - but even when planning troop movements on the map, the game goes on. To top things off, there is also a limited amount of resources allocated to the player and can be gained by destroying enemies; these resources can then be used to buy new tanks before the start of the next mission. The terrain is uneven and capable of showing hills but only one section is shown at a time.

Das Boot (literally 'The Boat') simulates controlling a Type VII U-Boat for the Nazis, in an exact recreation of submarine warfare circa 1941. Both internal and external views are provided, all rendered in full 3D. Allied submarines and surface boats are attacking you from all sides - use your Hydrophone to be aware of forthcoming threads, and use the water as protection from enemy planes. You have 4 styles of torpedo on board - Contact, Acoustic, Looping and Magnetic. All orders are sent in code, to prevent sensitive information reaching Allied forces, with an Enigma code-cracking machine built in to decipher them. There are three skill levels to play at.

DragonStrike Westwood Associates / Strategic Simulations, Inc. [top]

A dragon flight simulator set in Krynn, the AD&D world of Dragonlance. Fly dragons through the War of the Lance. When you successfully complete a mission, you can advance in rank, gain magical items and hit points or get a better dragon. The 20 missions include intercepting enemy dragons, destroying enemy ships and protecting the forces of good. DragonStrike combines elements of role-playing video games and flight simulators. The player character is a knight who flies on the back of a metallic dragon equipped with a lance and various magic items (among other things a magic orb that acts as a radar in the game). The player's dragon can use its recharging magical breath to attack and can also attack with its claws if the dragon passes closely above enemies. Opponents in the game include evil dragons with and without riders and other flying monsters such as manticores and beholders. Flying too close to the ground is another hazard for the player as enemy archers are present in some areas. Completing successful missions provides the character with more hit points and the opportunity to obtain a more powerful dragon. Depending on what dragon the player choses (between a bronze, a silver and a gold dragon) the ending and missions become slightly different.

After six years away from Earth, your delivery contract is finally over, you've been paid a fat cheque and you can't wait to get home. As your ship gets closer and closer to the old beloved blue planet, the anticipation mounts. But wait! What's this? The earth is an unfamiliar, grey husk! A vast alien mothership hangs above it, mercilessly sucking out all of its natural resources. While you were away, the Eco Phantoms arrived, and did this! Now, you've managed to steal an Eco zeppelin craft and have gone down to Earth, to try to reverse the planet-draining process before it's too late. The Eco Phantoms have built several domes on the planet's surface, which house their buildings and equipment. You'll have to navigate through three of these domes, learning how to operate and maintain your alien craft, gathering resources, collecting data spheres, rescuing prisoners and engaging in confrontations with the Eco forces. Eventually, if you survive long enough, you'll be able to enter the alien mothership, where you will have to reprogram the main computer, to reverse the process and restore Earth to life. This is a hybrid game that contains exploration with an aircraft in pseudo-3D dungeon-like environments, action-based combat, arcade sequences, and puzzle-solving elements.

F29 Retaliator Digital Image Design Ltd. / Ocean Software Ltd. [top]

This is a combat flight simulator based mostly on speculations on then-future aircraft that were expected to be in use by the year 2002, in particular based on the design of the Lockheed Martin F-22 and the Grumman X-29A. The graphics were detailed by the standards of the period, featuring cities, bridges, roads, islands, mountains and moving vehicles. The plane's cockpit had three multi-function displays available to set up in a number of configurations. The fantastic "future" weapons to choose from include a fighter-carried Tomahawk cruise missile, rearward-firing AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and a gigantic cluster bomb. The PC version allowed head-to head dogfighting using a null modem cable. This game is regarded as being severely bugged (for example, since the game allows the airplane to be controlled even after the pilot ejects, it is possible for players to hit themselves with their own plane). The game includes four war scenarios (Arizona desert test and training sites, Pacific conflict, Middle East conflict and the World War III in Europe) each with several missions, with the total number of those adding up to 99. The last mission of the game can be any of three, and completion of each one leads to different game endings. A "Special Mission" add-on was released with ZERO magazine in 1990, featuring a battle against the alien spacecraft from the then-upcoming space combat game EPIC.

When you're done, you can even try your hand at LANDING on an aircraft carrier. It supports multiplayer via serial ports, so you can actually dogfight the Phantoms and Intruders in a MiG-21 should you choose to do so. However, there was no separate cockpit art for the MiG... You'll see the F-4 cockpit instead. The game was in production before the book was published. When the book was a big seller, Stephen Coonts was contacted regarding permission to use his book title on a game. He agreed readily, and even wrote the preface to the manual. The novel was included in the game.

JetFighter II: Advanced Tactical Fighter RD Technologies / Velocity Inc. [top]

War erupts once again along the west coast of America, although this time it is with a drug baron. The military is put to action, and the most advanced jets in the U.S. inventory are put to the test: the F-14, F/A-18, and the YF-23 (Northrop's black-skinned fighter that eventually lost the ATF contract to Lockheed/Martin's YF-22). Game options include an "adventure" (i.e. campaign) mode, where mission successes and failures dynamically affect the overall war, free flight, and various other single mission scenarios. The YF-23 has the naval package, which allows it to participate in carrier-borne operations alongside the F-14 and F/A-18. Graphically, the engine has been updated to take advantage of the latest in VGA technologies, and included the popular "gradient" horizon. And like its predecessor Jetfighter, San Francisco is featured with its notable landmarks.

In the future, the Earth is a wasteland, unable to sustain human life any longer. Mankind's only hope is to find a new world to colonize. Giant transport ships are launched, each carrying 10 million people. Sent ahead of each of these ships is a Trailblazer-class scout. Controlling one of these Trailblazers, it's the players mission to find a suitable planet for a new colony, to scout for natural resources and to deal with various alien species, who might be both friend or foe. From a robot-controlled home base, the Trailblazer starts exploring the nearby star systems (two different star clusters are selectable, representing different difficulty levels). Planets in uninhabited systems can be claimed for their natural resources. If aliens already inhabit a system, diplomatic negotiations can be opened. Since the resources of the uninhabited systems won't be enough for sustaining a colony, trade agreements with the aliens are necessary. Each alien species has its own attitude and quirks. Not all of them are friendly, and some might demand that the player attacks their enemies before they agree to trading or a peace treaty. If hostilities with aliens begin, there are a variety of combat options. The Trailblazer itself is rather slow and sluggish, but is equipped with a powerful main gun and a gun turret. It can also launch remote-controlled combat chassis in various configurations: as a guided missile, a kamikaze ship, or a fighter, the latter two being controllable by the player. The systems of the Trailblazer (the weapons, shields, sub- and faster-than-light engines) are powered by various parts. On the engine room screen, these parts can be individually mounted or removed. Combat may damage the parts. The same parts are used by different systems of the ship, so they can be moved around to improve one system at the expense of another. New and replacement parts can be collected from the wreckage of destroyed alien ships and space stations, or be acquired through trading.

LineWars Patrick Aalto [top]

Cobra Mark IV multi-purpose General Contact Vehicle is an astonishing stellar vehicle. It's got beam lasers mounted up front and at the rear and is loaded with missile launchers. It's highly maneuverable and quick to react you your every move. Naturally a fighter like this will give you a great advantage. Unfortunately your opponent is flying the exact same thing. Quick reactions will determine the outcome of this duel in outer-space involving up to four opponents. Be careful of other ships flying about and mind those asteroids. LineWars is an space-fighter sim that takes place in the far reaches of another galaxy. You control your ship via mouse or keyboard from a first person perspective. By using the number keys you can look around the different viewpoints of your ship and of course will have to do so to mount those rear beams. Your weapons are the aforementioned laser beams and missiles. The missiles only fire when locked on a target but the lasers can be used to blast meteors, passing law-abiding space ships and just to waste your energy. Your energy (shields) and lasers have a limited gauge. Once the gauge lowers to zero for your lasers you will have to wait a few seconds for them to refill. This naturally doesn't apply to your energy. Once those babies come down it's just a few inches of hull between you and oblivion. Missiles are limited to four shots but there is the off chance that your missile launcher will jam at which point you must engage in battle without them. The game receives it's name not from the linear polygonal graphics but from fighting "on-line". That is, phone line. Multi-player battles can be fought via modem between four players but there's always the computer if friends are lacking. Settings of the game are adjustable in that you can select friction and speed at which you react and the number of opponents fighting.

Quasar RufusPro Software [top]

Perhaps notable for a valiant effort at real-time, wireframe 3-D graphics in (Tandy 1000) BASIC, Quasar is a first-person space shooter taking place across multiple quadrants of an unnamed galactic sector. Your fighter is equipped with limited energy stores, and a double laser (which depletes said energy). You start off in a planetary sector populated by waves of hostiles, which come in two chief variants: yellow and red; both take pleasure in ramming you, with bad results for your continuing existence. Destroying the red craft increases your energy however, while picking off the yellows engages your warp drive. In this mode, zapping a red will launch you into a stargate: this abstract geometric zone will lead you to another quadrant, depending on your warp factor - it may again contain a planet, or an empty void patrolled by enemy saucers. It may also be occupied by a black hole (where your discomfort will be short-lived, but so will your game).

As Commander Sean Bannon, you must use these resources correctly in five missions ranging from defending a hill to attacking a centre through a forest. The control interface of the game is somewhat unique as it features a four-way split screen with different control options in order to grant direct orders to four individual platoons of tanks. The game simulates instruments of war including thermal imaging in a detailed manner, as well as giving access to scrolling maps of the battlefield as combat unfolds. Wing Commander ORIGIN Systems, Inc. [top]

This is a flight combat game interwoven with a cinematic storyline set in the 27th century. Rather than modeling real-world physics with a completely accurate simulation of space flight, the game is designed to provide a fun, intense, first-person space dogfighting experience. Several things distinguish this title from other games upon its initial release: the graphics, music and sound are state of the art, surpassing most (if not all) other competing products in the industry at the time. The storyline, of which a short segment unravels after each mission, has many plot devices rarely used before in a computer game of its type: character development, interpersonal conflict, ethics and more. In the first scenario, the player takes the role of a young Lieutenant who has just been assigned to the carrier ship Tiger's Claw, the pride of the Confederate Navy. As the primary goal of the game unfolds, you learn of the Confederation's campaign to take Vega Sector from the Kilrathi, an alien race bent on ruling the galaxy. Unique for its time, it used a hybrid 3D system that took place in true 3D space, but used bitmaps drawn from different angles for sprites. The end result was a 3D system that was fast without the speed penalty of rendering polygons in realtime (bitmap scaling and rotation was employed instead). A similar method was used in Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, but not until several years later. A successful synergism between space action simulations and an adventure, it was one of the first games to play like a movie, with it's cinematic cutscenes. It's impact remains apparent through the countless sequels and other games which utilize it's concepts. It made use of a fully-orchestrated (if MIDI) Variable Mix, helping to make Sound Blaster a household name in computers. It spun off 8 novels and a feature film. In 1996, Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga was released which contained remastered versions of games 1-3, with a high-quality soundtrack and perfect execution under Windows without speed or stability problems. It added drop-away cockpit support for 1 & 2 and rudder/pedal support for 3.

Wing Commander: The Secret Missions ORIGIN Systems, Inc. [top]

In the first Secret Missions add-on to Wing Commander, the TCS Tiger's Claw responds to a distress call from the Terran colony in the Goddard System. Once they arrive, they find that the colony has been completely destroyed by a new Kilrathi secret weapon, with no survivors. The Tiger's Claw is then ordered to pursue the Kilrathi fleet into their own space and destroy this new weapon - without reinforcements or the ability to resupply. This addon campaign adds 16 new missions to fly. Unlike the main game, there is no branching mission tree - progress is linear. There are also several new ships: a Confederation corvette, Kilrathi and Confederation freighters and of course the Kilrathi dreadnought with the secret weapon itself. Characters from the main game can be transferred into the add-on, which also includes a "Mission Selector" to fly any of the missions from the original game. In 1996, after Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga was released which contained remastered versions of games 1-3 and ran under Windows, Secret Missions 1 and 2 were made available for download from the Origin web/FTP site.

ShootEm Up 2D/3D

Alien Force Robert Epps [top]

This places you in control of a space ship on a mission to destroy all enemy ships. It's based on Attack Force for the TRS-80, which in turn was the embodiment of a 1980 arcade game called Targ. Destroy every ship on a level and you go up to the next level with more difficult enemies. The action is showed from top-down, and you move around on a one-screen field with obstacles. You are only allowed to shoot one missile at a time, so the game is not about non-stop shooting. In the beginning levels, the enemy ships are easy; not even firing at you. As you progress through the levels, the ships get harder and start to shoot at you.

Bios AGD / Ediciones Manali [top]

This is a Spanish side-scrolling futuristic and (apparently) plotless flying game. The beautiful looking space fighter flies by itself from left to right across the screen and has to destroy various dangerous and hostile objects. They differ in that the second (hostile) ones do not intend to cause us any harm (asteroids, flying bubbles ...), but the first ones (different types of spaceships) do, so they actively fire on our boat. Ammunition as such in the game is endless, which, unfortunately, cannot be said about fuel: formally, it is enough, but four units of it are spent almost every second. To replenish the stock, you need to collect bonuses with the letter F. There are also bonuses with the letter T, which are also important - by raising this, we temporarily gain the ability to shoot not one, but three missiles at once. The game has several levels, each of them ends with a hyperspace portal, flying into which we go to the next one. "Lives" per level are given five pieces, in case of death, we are reborn in the same place where we died. It should be noted that any contact of the ship with a dangerous object, a hostile object or the last ammunition fired ends in instant death. The levels themselves are not that very long, but from a certain point it becomes very difficult to play - when enemies and (or) asteroids gather on the screen in such numbers that it is simply impossible to fly between them. Graphics - CGA, but very nice, especially since the lack of color diversity is fully explained by space as a setting. In principle, as can be concluded from the above, there is nothing revolutionary for the subgenre in this game, and no one planned it, probably. It's just another "scroller with a couple of features" that has become a phenomenal rarity against its will. And now he (and you) have the opportunity to make an acquaintance. For all connoisseurs of this kind of games, who have already played everything known, the game will be a great gift.

Blood Money DMA Design Limited / Psygnosis Limited [top]

The game is a shoot 'em up which scrolls both horizontally and vertically, while being viewed from an R-Type style sideways perspective. Navigating the levels sometimes requires the player to duck through gaps in scenery. The player has 4 missions to take on, in each case trying to kill baddies for the money they have, which can be spent in the shop rooms to upgrade their craft. Energy is depleted by contact with enemies and the walls, although there are some baddies who simply hover on your ship and steal, rather than physically doing damage. Players move through four stages on the planet, taking control of a different vehicle in each level: a helicopter in the metal world, a submarine in a water world, a spacesuit in an ice world, and a fighter jet in a fire world. Each vehicle features unique weaponry, which players use to attack all advancing enemies. Players can upgrade their vehicle with power-ups, which grant them additional weapons and upgrades, such as support missiles and neutron bombs. The vehicles' energy acts as players' health, and is depleted when the vehicle makes contact with enemies and walls. When all energy is lost, players lose a life; three lives are provided at the beginning of the game, and additional lives can be collected as players progress through the levels.

Chopper Commando Mark Currie [top]

Fly your chopper and complete various missions in this simple helicopter simulation game. You create your own pilot, and as you complete missions successfully, your pilot gets promotions, and the game goes on until either the pilot gets killed in action, or gets promoted all the way to General, thus retiring the pilot. To start a mission, you select your pilot and choose your difficulty. Each difficulty has its own group of missions, and the mission in your choice of difficulty is randomly selected each time. The objective in a mission can be destroying an enemy aircraft or building, delivering something to another friendly base, stopping a cruise missile, or just destroying all the buildings in the enemy territory. If you get killed in a mission, then your pilot is permanently dead, and your only option is to create a new pilot or use a different one. If you complete a mission without dying, however, you get points, and if you have enough points, you get promoted to a higher rank. Basically, you beat the game by completing missions without getting killed until you're finally promoted to General, which is when your pilot retires. All the missions take place in one world, where there is one allied base on each end (you'll start at either of them), and enemy territory filled with buildings and aircraft in the middle. The gameplay is non-linear (aside from mission assignments), and allows you to go wherever you want and complete the mission in any way you choose. Even after you successfully complete your assignment in a mission, you can still fly around and do stuff like explore, or destroy other enemy buildings and warcraft, with the mission only ending when you land back at the base you started at (or the other base). Your helicopter is equipped with bombs, nukes and missiles. You can fire the bombs straight at objects, or drop them below you. Nukes are more powerful, and are more effective at destroying things. Missiles are also relatively powerful, and fly fast and straight. All your ammo is limited, however, and you can reload any time by landing at one of the allied bases.

Defender HVB Software [top]

An unexpected arcade shooter from the Dutch studio HVB Software, for all its primitiveness, especially in terms of graphics, capable of captivating in earnest. The player controls a cannon located at the bottom of the screen and is able to move left and right using the Shift keys, and, of course, shoot single projectiles (until one reaches the target, the other cannot be fired), the supply of which is unlimited. The playing field itself is divided into invisible stripes, which in turn consist of cells. Something attacks us from above - the strips begin to fill with shaded cells, and they do it with different and ever-changing intensity, either stopping or resuming growth. Thus, we are fighting these growing stripes of different sizes. Each shot destroys one cell and writes one point to the player's account. If at least one bar grows to the bottom of the screen, it will be a loss. Some cells contain bonuses, and in order to get them, you need to shoot at this cell. One of them gives an extra life (initially there are three in total), the other raises all the strips one cell up, that is, it sort of erases the topmost row. The game is divided into levels, on each next the intensity of the onslaught grows. For all its visual simplicity, typical for all HVB Software games, it's incredibly exciting and very complex. Surviving levels from level 3 onwards requires extreme concentration, quick reaction times, and sheer luck, because the bars grow randomly and you never know which one will suddenly increase and ensure defeat. Poor ASCII graphics, by the way, is only a plus, because there are no distractions, and everything really needed for the game is clear and understandable.

Everything costs energy, however, so there is a time constraint to play. Medals are earned during play which can be redeemed for ship enhancements (reduced energy use, increased fire power or increased shot damage) if the player is able to successfully dock with a starbase. Metal Gear Konami Industry Co. Ltd., Banana Development / Ultra Software Corporation [top]

This pioneer of stealth shooting was originally released on MSX in 1987 and was the the first video game designed by Hideo Kojima. This DOS release is based on an altered NES version. Near the end of the 20th century, a small fortified nation named Outer Heaven (founded by a mysterious war hero whose name and identity are shrouded in secrecy) is threatening the nations of the "West" with the development of a new prototype weapon named Metal Gear, a walking tank which is capable of launching nuclear warheads from anywhere on the globe. As FOX-HOUND's (an elite black ops unit) newest recruit, going by the codename of Solid Snake, your mission is to infiltrate Outer Heaven and rescue your missing comrade, Grey Fox (who was captured after a failed infiltration), while gathering intelligence on Metal Gear. In order to fulfill this objective, the player must collect various weapons and equipments (including keycards for further access into the fortress), while avoiding visual contact with the enemy. The player must also confront bosses in the form of Outer Heaven's elite mercenary force and rescue hostages hidden within the fortress in order to increase player rank, which gives Snake an extended life bar and increased storage capacity for replenishable items and ammo. The player can use a wireless transceiver to come in touch with their commanding officer, Big Boss, to learn more about their current mission objectives or contact one of the local resistance members operating covertly within the fortress to gain useful tips and insights. The PC version contains many minor changes, such as a faster-depleting health bar. In 2020, a Windows release on GOG came out based on the original MSX version.

Operation Harrier Creative Materials / U.S. Gold Ltd. [top]

This is an action game starring Britain's famous VTOL aircraft. It uses an enhanced version of the Rotoscape system first used in Creative Materials' earlier Rotox: the own plane is seen from the top and when steering left or right the polygonally rendered background rotates around it. A new addition is the ability to change altitude. The game consists of several missions, each with a specific goal like destroying an enemy cruiser or power plant or defending an airfield from enemy fighters. Before a mission, the Harrier can be armed with a variety of weapons, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles as well as two types of bombs. Standard armament is a forward-firing cannon with unlimited ammunition. A radar screen and a map help finding the enemy during a mission. Fuel is limited, but in some missions in-air refueling is possible. While the Harrier can survive a few hits, it can also be repaired (and refueled) after mission's end. Sometimes it is also possible to make a mid-mission resupply landing at a friendly base. One of US Gold's most overlooked games, it's a fun top-down shooter that plays similar to EA's Jungle Strike: it's essentially an arcade-style game that puts you in control of a plane, shooting enemies below. It offers more depth and gameplay variety, however, because you have to pay attention to various flight-sim parameters including fuel, your altitude, and the nifty radar that shows where your enemies are. The graphics are better than average, as appropriate shadows and animation effects give a good illusion of 3D, even though the game is based on 2D sprites.

Rotor Systematics / Arcana Software Limited [top]

You control a battle tank (the Rotor) which hovers in a 2D-labyrinth. Gravity pulls heavily on the Rotor, making it fall towards the ground. As any contact with walls or enemies is deadly, your main task is to avoid that. You may rotate your tank freely and accelerate via an afterburner, thus manoeuvring through the corridors -- imagine a mix of Asteroids and Lunar Lander to get an idea of the physics. Scattered throughout the 18 different fortresses are boxes. Shoot these open to find either a) Fuel: this will replenish your supply, which is drained by shooting and accelerating. b) Sun crystals: Collect all to finish the mission. c) Bombs. They will explode in 30 to 60 seconds, destroying your ship. You can avoid that by leaving the screen quickly, or by picking the bomb up; this earns you major credits, but your ship drops much faster due to increased weight. d) Pearls. Collecting these advance the upgrade counter by one to three steps; you may activate the current upgrade at any time, which will improve your rotation speed, engine strength, weapon, shield etc. Boxes are emptied by carefully flying very, very close to them and activating a tractor field. As if gravity and accurate flying wasn't challenging enough, the game also confronts you with various enemies. All of these are immobile and fire in a straight line; the sheer mass of them makes avoiding the bullets a difficult task nevertheless. Apart from turrets, there are attractors and repulsors who'll smash you into walls, and force fields that need to be deactivated by finding and shooting a switch. The tricky labyrinths together with the short supply of fuel, weight constraints and clever upgrade system make Rotor more a game of tactics and accuracy than arcade action. Wild shooting and careless flying will deplete your fuel in no time; you'll have to progress carefully to discern traps in time.

RS-2 Softstar Entertainment Inc. [top]

This is a side scrolling shooter, single player, with power-ups and large end-level bosses. Each level (or "act" as the game calls them) starts with a picture foreshadowing the end-boss ship. Power-ups come in the form of yellow balls with a letter in them, which appear when the player shoots jukebox-shaped enemies. The letter K is halve moons, B is target-seeking fireballs, S is scatter shot and L is laser beams (plaid laser beams). At the start of the game, the first two power-ups will equip the player's ship with two pods, after that the player can get the different weapons. Picking up a power-up changes weapons of the dual pods. Unlike other shooter games, picking up more of the same power-up type does not make the player's weapon stronger. There are no extra lives or continues, the player only has one health bar making it a difficult game to beat. Flying through enemies or geting hit by bullets decreases health, and when all health is gone the player's ship crashes and it's game over. The game is mainly a matter of remembering enemy patterns and memorizing when and where the enemies will appear. The movement patterns of the end bosses seem to be deliberately designed to deceive the player the first time he encounters them. For example, at one point the first boss will move up in a way that the player thinks he has to fly underneath it, at which point the boss will suddenly stomp down.

Shooting Gallery Arcanum Computing / Personal Companion Software [top]

This is a cute little arcade game released as shareware. It's a combination of 7 little shooting games which are all controlled by the mouse and depend on your quick mouse reactions. You'll gain points and the goal is to get as high as possible in the highscore list. Of the 7 little games, 1 and 4, 2 and 5 and 3 and 6 are some sort of 'sequels' to each other. It are quite the same games, only a little bit more difficult. The seventh game is maybe the most fun of all, you have to shoot cowboys which are invading a family's house, and you should try not to shoot the family members.

Space Miner Sights UnScene [top]

This is a single-player shareware top-down scrolling space shooter. The story behind this game is that the mega corporations of the future have declared regions of space containing mega-ore as being off-limits to private firms. The player takes the role of a third generation independent miner who chooses to mine the ore in restricted space. This sets the scene for a Galaxian-style game in which most, but not all of the nasties come down the screen intent on destroying the player's craft. While shooting the baddies the player must also collect the pieces of ore which flow down the screen.

Super C Konami Industry Co. Ltd. / Konami, Inc. [top]

The alien Red Falcon is back, and planning on taking over the planet Earth. Now it's up to Scorpion and Mad Dog to battle through five levels and save the planet. Super Contra is the sequel to Contra. Gameplay is a combination of side scrolling/platform and top down view. This was the last in Konami's widely acclaimed Contra series that were translated to the PC, There's plenty of weapons that can be collected, with the same aiming and jumping controls. There are a wide variety of enemies to defeat, starting with earthly locations, and progressing to more alien. To help out, weapon upgrades can be found as the game progresses. Two players can play simultaneously, or one player can attempt to take on Red Falcon himself. As the game progresses, its obvious how the motifs of each level changes... at first human and militaristic, later hideous and very alien. There are two overhead levels, much like Commando. The flamethrower has been made more powerful (it shoots flame balls that burst on contact with a surface). The best improvement is that the game as a whole seems much less frustrating. It's still difficult, but many of the unfair deaths in Contra aren't here any more. This is no cakewalk, though: the bosses are still tough, and very huge.

Voyager Ediciones Manali [top]

This is a Spanish vertically scrolling shoot'em up with some resemblance to two Spanish games of the time, such as Rath-tha and Jackson City (actually both share perspective and graphical palette of beige tones), but more grim realization in all and each of the aspects. If something is striking in Voyager it's the nonexistence of phases. The whole game is made as a single level in which, as we move forward, our adversaries vary so much as the scenery. And speaking of enemies, we face these by the hordes. We never attack two different types of enemies at once. Also, mention that all our adversaries lack firepower, though, to compensate for this, they lurk in large numbers. There are no bosses, or collecting items that will improve the ability of our ship or bonus stages, or virtually anything that we would expect in a moderately competent shoot'em up.

Wild Life New-Deal Productions S.A. [top]

This is basically the same game as the developer's previous Safari Guns with new scenarios (America, Arctic, India and Australia) and interface. In each level, the player is given a list of three animals he or she needs to photograph. The process is similar to first-person shooters like Operation Wolf: the player controls a crosshair over the left and right scrolling landscape. After an animal appears, the crosshair needs to be quickly moved over them and a click triggers the photograph. The interface is basically a set of buttons which need to be clicked on to change the active crosshair: hand (needed to pick up additional equipment or medi packs for healing), 50 mm lens, telephoto lens (for small and far off animals) and a rifle (shooting hunters which try to hurt the player). The number of photographs the player can take is limited and needs to be refilled by picking up frequently appearing new rolls.
