FPS Year Summary 1992

Wolfenstein 3D was a shareware game, offering the full game to be distributed to everyone but limiting the levels playable so that people hooked on the game could pay to register the game and access the whole thing. This system was used for the next few years until the proliferation of the cracking scene where hackers bypass such protections. This game added support for VGA graphics and sound cards. It was an instant success and is generally credited with inventing the first person shooter genre proper. It built on the ray casting technology pioneered in earlier games to create a revolutionary template for shooter game design, which first person shooters are still based upon today. Despite the violent themes, and being banned in Germany due to the use of Nazi iconography, it largely escaped the controversy generated by the later Doom.
Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss was a fantasy RPG with shooting magic spells created by Richard Garriot's Origin, it featured a fully 3d world and even gave the players the amazing ability to look up and down. It included lighting, varying wall heights, slopped surfaces, swimming and jumping in its 3d world. A technology demo of this game was John Carmack's inspiration for Wolfenstein 3D's game engine.

First Person Shooters

Catacomb Abyss, The / Catacomb Abyss 3D Gamer's Edge / SoftDisk [top]

After the breakup from iD, SoftDisk made this sequel on their own. Abyss was the only one released as shareware. New enemies and locations like a mine and an aqueduct...
The Catacomb Abyss is one of the first ever first-person shooters. It's based on an early id Software raycasting engine, similar to the one used in Wolfenstein 3D (which came months afterwards) but in 16 colours.
You play the role of a magician, who is once again called upon by the townspeople to defeat his ancient archrival Nemesis again. After having defeated Nemesis in the past, his minions have erected a huge museleum in his honour, and as a result the townspeople are forced to live under a rule of horror. You must once again venture into the catacombs, defeat Nemesis and free the townspeople.

Maze Wars Amazing Graphics [top]

Maze Wars is a decent 3D maze game that is by no means revolutionary, but deserves mention as one of the first 3D maze mouse-driven games. The objective is simple: find the exit to the maze, while shooting monsters who get in your way. The game is timed, making it quite challenging on higher levels (especially beyond level 3). The game includes 11 levels in total, although they are all very similar except for maze size and the number of monsters (which all appear as floating polygons). One nice feature of the game is that it allows you to change the colors of everything: monsters, walls, floor etc. One gripe with the game is that the controls take some getting used to: instead of using mouse buttons for firing weapons, the game instead forces you to press them for movement (left = forward and right = backward). You need to press both mouse buttons at once to shoot — a quirk that's quite annoying at first, but doesn’t take long to get used to. The animations are quite smooth, and the action fast and furious. Overall, recommended for fans of maze games who want more challenge than typical maze games. Make sure you use a slowdown program to run this one, though.

Spear Of Destiny ID Software / FormGen [top]

Sequel to Wolfenstein 3D. After the success of Wolfenstein, new missions where published fast. There are new bosses, including mutants with built-in guns, and textures - nothing more, nothing less. The levels were arranged better, - larger and more complicated, which made the automap really missed, especially when dealing with the lots of secret passages. So it doesn't change much that instead of episodes, the game consists of one campaign of 21 levels. Personally, the game wasn't as much fun as the original.

Virtual Reality Studio II / 3D Construction Kit II Incentive Software Ltd. / Domark Software Ltd. [top]

As you would expect, "Virtual Reality Studio 2.0" (VRS2) is "Virtual Reality Studio" (VRS), a utility for creating 3D worlds in Freescape< with enhancements. There are double the number of controls and commands available in VRS for added complexity and flexibility. You can now create transparent objects or objects that fade. Rounded objects such as flexicubes and spheres are now possible. There's a sound effects editor so that your virtual creations need no longer be silent and the program now comes with a library of pre-designed 3D "clipart" for those of you who are too lazy to design everything from scratch. Like the original VRS, the program comes packaged with a tutorial on VHS video cassette for those who don't like to read manuals and your VR creations can be saved as stand-alone programs that don't need VRS2 to run.

Wolfenstein 3D ID Software / Apogee [top]

iD Software's first big hit. This was inspired by earlier games called Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein which were in top-down view. You find yourself in a prison cell in a nazi castle. You break out, armed with only a knife, and fight your way through the crowds of nazis and attack dogs. The building has a number of hidden rooms containing various treasures, food supplies, and medical kits, as well as three different guns and ammunition. The graphics were completely ingenious and fast for those times. Ceiling and floor however were not texturised, but that didn't catch someones eye. There was no automap, too, but the levels were manageable without it. It was originally released as shareware, which allowed it to be copied widely. The shareware release contained one episode consisting of 10 levels. The retail version contained 2 more episodes plus a mission pack of 3 more for a total of 60 levels. There are five kinds of enemies (excluding bosses) - Dogs (fast, but more a nuisance than life-threatening), Army Soldiers (dressed in regular brown outfit, not very powerful but usually found in large groups), Officers (dressed in white, armed with a very accurate pistol and tough to kill), SS Troopers (blue attire, armed with a machine gun and tough to kill) and Mutants (the rarest and toughest of regular enemies, pale-skinned troopers with green clothes and a machine gun stuck in their chest). Unlike modern FPS games, the player has a number of lives, and once the player loses the last life, the game ends. To win extra lives, the player either has to find the 1-up item in the level, get 20 000 points by killing enemies and capturing treasures or completing a level below the "par" time and killing all enemies, finding all secrets (push walls) and collecting all treasure points. In Germany the game was banned, because of the Third Reich theme - so it was only successful in the "underground". Nevertheless, even in Germany there will be hardly any fan of 3D shooters who never played this game. On the 20th anniversary of the game's release in May/2012, the game was made available to play free in a browser.

Third Person Shooters

Alone In The Dark Infogrames / I-Motion, Interplay Productions [top]

This groundbreaking game was the original 3d action adventure and influenced all survival horror games to come. You are detective Edward Carnby, hired to inventory the antiques in a spooky mansion whose owner died suspiciously. You can also play the mansion owner's niece, Emily through part of the game. The story was inspired by legendary horror writer H.P, Lovecraft's work. By using a revolutionary polygon based graphic engine, simplistic two-dimensional colored polygons, rather than being texture mapped, render three-dimensional characters and objects in real time. The game unfolds through the artistic use of multiple camera angles to create dramatic cinematic shots that play like you are playing a part in a movie. The puzzles are mostly inventory based or environmentally rooted. The arcade sequences take place in the form of both armed and unarmed combat. Objects are available for use as weapons. Life points are used to keep track of the health in both you and the enemies. Though there are inherent problems with the static angles in being able to control your character and items in a 3d environment, the game's spooky atmosphere and revolutionary gameplay still hold up as the classic game that it is.

Die Hard 2: Die Harder Tiertex Ltd. / Grandslam Video Ltd. [top]

This is a 2D shooting gallery. In the early 90's, two things just wouldn't die: Bruce Willis in the Die Hard trilogy of movies, and, well, 2D point-and-click shooters. Based on the 1990 movie Die Hard 2, the program sends you through five stages modelled after key scenes of the film. As N.Y. cop John McClane, you have to shoot terrorists invading Washington's Dulles airport by quickly aiming a crosshair at them. You’ll successively clear the luggage center, airport annexe and runway, then chase after the bad guys on a snowmobile and finally shoot it out on the wing of the terrorist's plane. Each stage consists of three screens; on the last one, several tougher bosses will appear. Occasionally, civilians cross the room and pray that you don’t kill them. Most dying terrorists drop power-ups, namely med-kits, armour, grenades and weapons that are more powerful or fire faster. You collect these items by shooting them in time. If you do not aim fast enough, the terrorist's bullets will drain your health; you may die three times, but after that, John McClane bites the dust once and for all. Until you restart, that is.

RoboCop 3 / Robocop 3D Digital Image Design / Ocean Software [top]

F29 Retaliator authors DID developed this particular use of the Robocop license, and produced something different from most film licenses. While it featured a succession of levels based around sections of the movie, these were highly varied and presented in polygon 3D graphics. These can be played in any order in the Arcade mode, or in planned sequence in the Movie Adventure mode, which follows the film's plot of Japanese investors wishing to replace Robocop with their Robot Ninja designs, and thus expecting him to prove himself as superior.
The first task is a car chase resembling Chase HQ, in which a mazey section of road must be followed efficiently. There are several first-person 3D shooing sections,. in which you must use a target to shoot down punks and invaders, without harming civilians. Robocop also takes to the skies in a simulation of his new Gyropack flying device. Also, he must do battle with his intended replacement in a fixed-perspective beat 'em up section.

Terminator 2029, The Bethesda Softworks [top]

The year 2029: you fight in the ruins of Los Angeles (and other locations later) against hordes of robots. You are well-equipped, not like described in the movie. You are wearing a combat suit which enables you to carry lots of useful things like weapons, computers and armour. Because of the equipment you are similar to the enemy robots. You have to count on your equipment and often need to repair it on your own. The environment is kept gloomy. You walk in the environment in a 3D view similar to Eye Of The Beholder, which is not 3D really, but some sort of "boxed walking-area" . The benefit was that it could be played on all not so modern systems in those times without having low FPS graphics. Aiming was done very precisely using the mouse. Enemies were drones, H/K's, Terminators and infiltrators, for example. In some levels there are infiltrators as well as human resistance members, which were hard to tell apart. When shooting a human he dies, but when shooting an infiltrator, his skin bursts, showing some of his metal inside. Conclusion: Terminator 2029 was my introduction to the 3D genre - i liked it a lot and like to remind myself of it.
The Terminator 2029 - Deluxe CD Edition includes the complete original The Terminator 2029 as well as it's Mission Disk Operation Scour, making a total of 34 missions. This compilation also adds over 330MB of mission briefings and character speech to the game and several award-winning pieces of music during game play.

Simulations

Aces of the Pacific Dynamix, Inc. / Sierra On-Line, Inc. [top]

Aces of the Pacific is a flight simulator game developed by Dynamix in 1992. Its success caused Dynamix to create a very similar sequel, entitled Aces over Europe. The game takes place during World War II. Player can choose single or instant mission, or choose to take a career path in United States Army Air Forces, United States Navy, United States Marines, Imperial Japanese Army or Imperial Japanese Navy. The game features various warplanes of the era, such as the F6F Hellcat and the Zero. If the 1946 Expansion Pack is installed, at the end of the war, the player may choose to continue in an alternate history in which atomic bombs were never used on Japan. The game calls the campaign Operation Coronet--the name the US Military used for the planned, conventional invasion of Japan. This extra campaign contains numerous prototype aircraft that were developed before the war's end but never saw combat in World War II. Numerous World War II aces make an appearance in the game, and the player can fly either with them or against them through the course of his or her career. Dick Bong, Thomas McGuire, David McCampbell, Joe Foss, and Pappy Boyington are some of the American aces that appear in the game. Accomplished aces of the Imperial Japanese Navy such as Hiroyoshi Nishizawa, Tetsuzo Iwamoto, and Saburo Sakai also take to the skies of the Pacific. The game includes historical missions, should the player choose to play them during the course of their career or as a single mission. Historical missions include the Japanese Navy's surprise Attack on Pearl Harbor, defense of Pearl Harbor by a handful of US Army Air Corps P-40 Warhawks based at Wheeler Field, fighter/bomber combat during the Battle of Midway, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Battle of Coral Sea and the ambush of Japanese Admiral Yamamoto by P-38s.

This expansion set to Aces of the Pacific is premised on what might have happened in the pacific theater if WWII had not ended in 1945. Based on research of the allied war plans and documents, the player is given the chance to fly in the campaigns that might have been. Some of the aircraft that were being prototyped when the war ended are included. These are the Grumman F7F Tigercat, the Grumman F8F Bearcat, the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star (a jet), the improved Goodyear F2G-2 Corsair, and for the Japanese Navy the Kyushu J7W Shinden, the Nakajima Kikka (a jet), and the Mitsubishi Ki-83.

Air Warrior Kesmai Corporation / Konami, Inc. [top]

Welcome to the skies of Air Warrior! Air Warrior is an online multiplayer flight simulator that was initially on the GEnie network in 1986 before being converted to run over the internet. The flight line comes with a stable of 17 WW II era fighters (P-51D Mustang, P-38J Lighting, F4U Corsair, Spitfire MK IX, BF-109F, FW-190, YAK-9D) and bombers (B-17G Flying Fortress, B-25J Mitchell, Junkers JU-88) from 5 nations for your aerial dogfights and bombing missions. Connect via the GEnie network or fly head-2-head against a friend at modem speeds as low as 1200 baud. If you played via GEnie network, the battles could contain up to 50 people from all over America at the same time. Each plane has unique features in regards to performance, maneuverability, and flight control characteristics. Using the keyboard control help-screen (brought up with the F10 key) during flight helps reduce the learning curve. Chat communication in real-time air battles is limited to keyboard text, which makes quick abbreviated responses a necessity. The game has SVGA graphics of 640x480 256 colors, which allows enhanced cockpit layouts, increased visibility, and realism during off-line training and online aerial warfare. Air Warrior for Windows (AW4W) came out in 1996.

ATAC: The Secret War Against Drugs Argonaut Software Ltd. / MicroProse Ltd. [top]

Lead the secret war on illegal drugs in South America! Wage war against drug barons with advanced weaponry such as F-22 fighters and AH-64 helicopters. Destroy their drug pipeline to starve them of cash, but don't hit the civilians or you may get kicked out of the country! The drug lords won't stand by though... And they had used the drug money for an effective arsenal, from missiles to fighters and more. Gather intelligence, decide on strike targets, and launch planes to accomplish their missions. Take over any plane in flight if you think they need help. Send in DEA agents to gather more intelligence and resupply local rebels. Can you win the war? ATAC can be described as two games in one. On the strategic level, you need to figure out how the drug barons are forming their pipeline and the best way to destroy the pipeline while causing minimal damage to the civilian population, while defending your own base against intruders and attackers. You can order recon flights or gather intelligence from rebels and DEA agents on the ground. When you get enough intelligence, you can issue target orders to up to 4 crafts (F-22's or AH-64's). and they'll go accomplish those missions if they can. Once you're off in the air, the game becomes first-person simulator, where you fly through the jungles of South America chasing the target you need to destroy while fighting the drug baron's mercenary forces. How you do in one will affect how you do in the other.

AV8B Harrier Assault / Super VGA Harrier Simis Limited / Domark Software, Inc. [top]

This is another simulator using Simis' popular graphic engine. The sim is similar to KA-50 Hokum in gameplay. You have at your disposal some Harriers and with the excellent mission map/planner you can plan your missions and then execute them. The sim puts you in a conflict in East Timor, a former Portuguese colony. The area was annexed (some will say "integrated") into Indonesian territory in 1976. It proved to be a painful thorn in the flesh for the Indonesian government as the province had been restless ever since the Portuguese left in 1975. Even after the recent referendum, in which the residents of the province voted to go separate ways with Indonesia, it is not yet free of troubles. In the conflict portrayed in this sim, you'll be flying against Indonesian Air Force aircraft, which include A-4 Skyhawks and F-16 Fighting Falcons. A very unlikely scenario today in light of the current developments in Indonesia, but very valid during early 90's. The sim itself portrays the AV-8B Harrier quite convincingly, considering the technological limits of those days. The graphics are very good and the mission planner is quite powerful. The campaign is not in the same level as the one in Falcon 3.0, but is very good nevertheless. As well as allowing you to fly the Harrier, you can also plan attacks with your ground and naval forces. If you prefer the strategic side of things you can let the games AI fly the missions for you, whilst you concentrate on commanding the resources available to you to strike on the enemy. In 1993, an updated version (the first SVGA sim) with 640 x 400 resolution graphics called Super VGA Harrier was released.

B-17 Flying Fortress MicroProse Software, Inc. [top]

B-17 Flying Fortress is a simulation of the legendary heavy bomber of World War II. After customizing one's bomber with nose art and a name, one of several randomly assigned bombing missions into Germany must be flown. The game not only features actual flight simulation, but also crew management. Each of the 10 crew members has ratings for categories like piloting, bombing and gunnery. During a mission, crew members can be reassigned to other posts if needed because of injuries. Each position including the pilot seat, the guns and the bombing sight can of course also be controlled by the player. A historically accurate number of 25 missions must be flown and survived to complete a tour of duty.

Birds of Prey Argonaut Software Ltd. / Electronic Arts, Inc. [top]

Birds of Prey is a flight simulation set in a fictional battle between the Soviet Union (B-side) and the Nato + allied (A-side). The player can fly up to 40 different planes and also control the whole battle campaign. The player is required to select one side 'A' or 'B' in the conflict, and keep the save game for each pilot on a separate floppy. Each pilot you can fly different missions and aircraft, but only those from your own side. The player character flies from three land bases and two aircraft carriers on each side, and these bases can be damaged in several ways by enemy action, making them unavailable until repaired and reducing the available aircraft in the campaign. Mission types are: air intercept, air superiority, long range bombing, bomber escort, close support and ground attack, border or sea patrol, reconnaissance, troop drop, supply drop, stealth bombing, stealth reconnaissance, test pilot. An autopilot mode is available for longer cruises, if the enemies are far off. The 'test pilot' mission involves flying the X-15/X-29 and is not a part of the campaign.

Comanche: Maximum Overkill NovaLogic, Inc. [top]

Comanche: Maximum Overkill is the first helicopter simulator to showcase NovaLogic's Voxel engine, which renders organic and lifelike terrain and realistic looking objects that no other game using polygons could match. It features the Army's experimental RAH-66 Comanche light attack helicopter (LHX). The game features a simple flight model and allows the player's helicopter to take much more damage than it could in reality. Additionally, weapons on the Comanche feature deadly accuracy and power. There are over 20 scripted campaign missions, similar to all other NovaLogic simulations.

Epic Digital Image Design Ltd. / Ocean Software Ltd. [top]

The sun is about to go supernova and humanity must find a new home. All the population is packed into a huge fleet of ships and they set off for a suitable planet. Unfortunately the route goes straight through the territory of a hostile alien race, the Rexxons. The game is a space shooter but you also get surface missions on different planets. The main emphasis on the game is the graphics which were excellent when the game was released but this meant that the game was very short with just 7 levels. There are loads of cutscenes all with music from Holst's planet suite. The in-game graphics as well as the stills and animations in the cut-scenes are great. Epic also features ground combat missions on planets next to the space missions, which wasn't seen before in this type of game. It's fun to play, the presentation overall is very stylish. However, there are only very few missions and some bad design faults. When you play it you will also notice soon that you can't fully pitch, making it more of a 2D shooter than a 3D space sim.

F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter 2.0 MicroProse Software, Inc. [top]

The sequel to F-19 Stealth Fighter - take America's premiere stealth fighter out for a spin in several battle areas, including the Persian Gulf, Cuba, and even Vietnam. There are various scenarios for each, with air-to-air or ground missions, in "cold war" and full-scale war situations. Players can build up their pilot ranks through completed missions and medals. The game actually has two flight modes. In the "authentic" mode, you have only 2 weapon bays, but you have higher stealth rating. In the "theoretical" mode, you have 4 weapon bays like F-19 Stealth Fighter, but your plane is easier to detect due to a lower stealth rating.

Starcop Ediciones Manali, S.A. [top]

This game is a space flight without any specific plot (from the title we can conclude that the action takes place in the future, and we play as a space policeman, but this is just an assumption) - you need to control a small spaceship with a view, interestingly, from a third person from behind (and not from above or from the side, as many are probably more familiar with). There are two types of levels, alternating with each other: on one, our whole task is reduced to dodging large green balls (apparently, these are asteroids) by changing the position of the ship on the screen, on the other - we need to try to destroy alien ships. A collision with both an asteroid and a ship leads to an instant explosion of the ship, but, of course, there is a certain amount of "lives". Alien ships, unlike yours, cannot fire, but their difference from asteroids is that they change their trajectory during the flight and deliberately want to collide with you, and from a certain moment they also fly several pieces close to each other, which makes them harder to shoot or dodge. The game is Spanish, so the controls here for those who are accustomed to English-language games will not be too familiar: the O and P keys - move the ship to the left and right, respectively, Q and A - move up and down, respectively, the spacebar - fire (the ammunition is endless). The graphics in the game are exclusively CGA, and rather poor, but this is understandable by the place of action (space), especially since our and enemy ships are drawn just well. There is practically no text in the game, except for the menu. All in all - a good game, but, unfortunately, really unremarkable and rather simple.

Zachary "Jazz" Colson, traitor to the Confederation, is being transported to his execution when he is freed by the Society of Mandarins. Meanwhile, Confed is testing its latest fighter, the Morningstar, on the Concordia. Performing the tests is the Wild Eagle Squadron, under the command of an old acquaintance: Todd "Maniac" Marshall. And while the Morningstar is still plagued with random failures of its jump drive, the Mandarin, under Jazz's command, have already set their eyes on acquiring the prototype for the Kilrathi. The second Special Operations add-on to Wing Commander II adds a further 20 missions to fly. The new flyable fighter in the game is the Morningstar, which is armed with a tactical nuclear missile called the Mace, able to take out an entire fighter wing with one blast. Maniac returns as a wingman and brings the members of his squadron along. The story is told with the usual assortment of extensive cutscenes. Player characters from either the original game or the first add-on can be transferred into Special Operations 2. XF5700 Mantis Experimental Fighter Paragon Software Corporation / Microplay Software [top]

In the late 21st century, an army of insect-like aliens has invaded the Earth. Relying on collective group mind and telepathic messages, these creatures have overthrown the dominant race on their home planet, Siria, assimilating their technology. As the planet became uninhabitable, the new Sirians have ventured into deep space, hoping to find a new home. Their goal was to find vertebrate creatures, in which they could lay their eggs; they have chosen the Earth for that reason. To avert this terrible threat, the Fist of Earth organization sends a fighter pilot named Viper to protect the planet, navigating their strongest weapon - the starfighter XF5700 Mantis. This is a mission-based space combat simulation, and a sequel to Warhead (a 1989 Amiga game). The game utilizes real space (Newtonian) physics for ship navigation. Mission objectives usually involve eliminating alien ships while protecting Viper's wingmen. The game continues the plot of Warhead in its 90 missions. The CD version added speech and extra missions than the floppy version.

Box Ranger [K] Soft Action / SKC Soft Land [top]

This is parody of the shooter Fox Ranger. The gameplay, except for a few new weapons and upgrades, is almost identical, but here the player is embodied by a pink Box. The enemies are insects and other small animals for the most part, but the most creepy is a stage where one fights against digitized black & white photos of the developer's faces (yes, Nam Sangkyu has made himself a boss in a video game). And the final boss is ... God? The default weapon shoots short bursts in a straight line, and upgrades include wingmen above and below the box, a shield that protects from attacks until broken, and additional weapons (which can also be acquired between stages by playing a rock-scissors-paper game). A special weapon is activated by pressing a separate key and has limited charges. The box has a set amount of hit points and respawns at the same location when losing a life, until it runs out of them and the player has to restart. Three difficulty levels are available. In between stages, extra weapons can be gained by playing a game of rock paper scissors against him.

Defender of Freedom Mirinae Software / DS Interactive [top]

Mirinae entered the IBM PC games market with this vertically scrolling Shoot 'em up. After the success of Geu Nal-i Omyeon II (The Day 2 on MSX2), the game was hyped a lot before release, first under the working title Unmyeong-ui Gyeoljeon (which should be picked up again for another game later). However Mirinae hadn't mastered the new platform yet, and the game had some technical issues, like occasional flickering and absolutely no control over the running speed, which makes the game impossible to run at a stable frame rate on any machine. It will either be too fast in normal situations, or choppy in more busy areas. The actual game stages are connected with a simplistic simulation element, where money earned in the stages can be invested in new technologies and space ships. The huge selection of weapon system forces the player to make tough choices especially early on in the game. Does one approach the next planet with a spare ship more, or equipped with a superior weapon? The fact that purchased upgrades are only available after the following stage make the choices even more strategic. Stages are rather short, but they repeat themselves indefinitely until the entrance to the next section is found. Thus, they can be grinded for more money, but only the toughest veterans will survive long enough for that. The game is extremely hard, not only is the screen full of enemies most of the time, big portions of the screen serve as dangerous obstacles most of the time, and not always is it easily recognizable where the safe path lies. In the end, it wasn't the expected hit from Mirinae, but solid enough to secure a mild success.

This is a shareware tank game for one to three players. The game is played in an arena with six players, the human player(s) and robot players. It is entirely keyboard controlled and the keys can be redefined. The story behind the game explains that the tanks are made from three large coloured fuel cylinders that grow dimmer as the tank runs out of fuel which neatly accounts for the simple triangular shapes used to represent them. Games consist of a series of battles, minimum three - maximum ninety-nine, and after every three battles the players get to spend any points they have earned in the shop upgrading their tank. There are five different kinds of tank available in the shop and each tank has seven weapons ports for which there is a wide array of weapons ranging from standard missiles and lasers to the 'death touch' and 'glow shields'.

It's a conversion of the 1987 coin-op arcade machine Freedom Fighter which used scenes from the ''Galaxy Express 999'' anime and ''Aiedu Galaxy Express'' anime. It's an interactive action-based cartoon in style of Space Ace, which allows the player to take part in shooting sequences while following an on-rails development of the plot. Fox Ranger Soft Action / SKC Soft Land [top]

This is a side scrolling space shooter from Korea. There are 6 stages with an end-boss at the end of each stage. The gameplay is simply shoot-anything-that-moves and there are lots of enemies on screen to shoot down. Press CTRL to fire the standard weapon and ALT to use the extra weapon, which is shown in a box at the top of the screen. When you die and your standard weapon is powered-up you don't lose it, instead it is powered-down, so you still have at least something. You can select level easy, normal or hard to start with 7, 5 or 3 ships. And you can set the shield to easy, normal or hard to start with 9, 6 or 3 shield units. This was the game that brought awareness to domestic games in Korea, paving the way for many new developing studios (even Nam Inhwan, the creator of the first Korean RPG in 1987, states Soft Action and Fox Ranger as the reasons that brought him back to the industry). But in 1992, it was actually quite impressive, and could have passed as a PC-Engine or early SNES game. Sure, the scrolling isn't the smoothest ever seen, but that is compensated with a lot of sprites on screen and sizeable bosses. The soundtrack even almost stole the entire show, securing Nam Sangkyu's reputation as the best game musician in the country. It even featured voices, but those were reserved to a few short samples, at the beginning of each stage, or when a special weapon is selected.

The enemies will come down in various pre-set patterns and do not really try to hit you... but staying out of their way can still be a challenge. Watch out as the ships fly down at you and as they return from the bottom of the screen flying up again. Get various power-ups such as shields to help you survive their attacks. Graviton Daniel A. Sill [top]

This is a space shooting game with vector graphics, based on the arcade game Gravitar. The object is to conquer all planets spread out over four solar systems. The player controls a blue triangle space ship in a similar fashion as Thrust, and the game features simple physics with gravity and inertia. The game starts in the solar system screen and the player can fly around to select a planet. The ship gravitates towards the sun and the player must avoid hitting it. In the galaxy screen, the player can encounter UFOs. When moving too close to an UFO, the game will zoom in on the encounter and the player has to fight the UFO while avoiding its bullets. Fly into a planet to enter the planet surface and destroy all gun turrets. When all turrets are destroyed, the player can fly all the way up to go back to the solar system screen. The planet will explode and the player can move on to the next. Press Z and X to rotate the ship left and right, press DOT to thrust to move around and press SLASH to fire. Pressing space will activate the shield to avoid getting hit by enemy bullets. When close enough the player can pick up extra fuel by hovering over the fuel dumps, represented by blue rectangles, and activating the shield.

Kaeon Thomas Pytel (Tran) [top]

In this arcade side-scrolling shooter, you are a pilot of space jet sent to infiltrate some planet, Kaeon. Your way to the core of this planet will be perilous, because its environment is full of different enemies. Your space jet has 3 kinds of fire weapons (activated by different keys) and extras, which power may be increased with power-ups collected during your flight. Standing, flying, or moving enemies are shooting at you as well as powerful Bosses block your way to the victory. The options allow you to define the rate of your and enemy shots, ability to die by collision with walls or enemies, etc. When you finish the level, the password will be given to you to continue your progress from this point. The Bosses, though graphically shabby like the rest, are well done, with many parts to destroy before they succumb. The top scores will be stored also. The game was never really completed. The executable contains visible names (and passwords!) for six levels: Orbiting Defence Station, Atmosphere, Alien Forest, Capital City, Underground, and the Core. However, data only exists for the first three - defeating the level 3 boss, or trying to use the passwords for levels 4-6, will just loop back to the main menu.

Despite some ugliness, this game was released not just as a commercial product, but in a real cardboard box, while at the same time being a colossal rarity hidden from the public by greedy people. Plot: aliens attacked South Korea, and a local pilot, sitting at the helm of the newest fighter, alone fights against them; that's all - but more is not required to justify what is happening. The gameplay is very standard for the subgenre. Perspective of the review - top view; the airplane moves forward automatically, but at our command it can go left and right, as well as “slow down” and “accelerate”. Ammunition in the form of missiles is endless; shooting is carried out using the "space" (alas, you just can’t hold this key, you just need to press it). There are only six levels, and four “lives” (the number of remaining, that is, not counting the current, is displayed in the lower left corner of the screen), and within each of them, which is not very typical for shoot 'em ups, there are also the smallest margin of safety, expressed as a decreasing red vertical scale along the left border of space; in the event of death and in the presence of "attempts" the airplane revives instantly in the same place where it exploded. During the passage, you can collect a variety of bonuses (one of their types, which is interesting - national flags); apparently, all of them somehow strengthen our attack, which is manifested in the addition to its visualization of some additional effects. The contents of the “arsenal”, divided into categories, are available for study on the left side of the screen - and it is noticeable that when firing, the reserves of the corresponding gizmos decrease. In addition, there are special items to restore the "health" of the airplane. Opponents are represented by various futuristic aircraft and robotic entities of various shapes and sizes; some die almost instantly, while others need to get a fair number of times before they explode; it seems that in fact individual enemies move lower or higher than us, since contact with them is sometimes (but quite rarely) harmless. Some adversaries simply fly themselves up and down the screen and although they shoot, they do not intentionally attack us, so they can be avoided; while others, on the contrary, attack precisely with purpose and can even “back up”. In general, the concentration of enemies is quite high, so the gameplay cannot be called easy; however, its main difficulty lies in not very, to put it mildly, responsive management. From the point of view of graphics, everything looks simple, but pretty cute: our airplane and objects opposing it are like toys, and urban landscapes stretched below (and shown on the title screens) are drawn quite carefully and atmosphericly. If we recall that this thing is one of the very first South Korean PC-games, then the impression becomes completely positive. Yes, there are enough shoot 'em ups made much more professionally in all respects, but the historical significance and cultural value of Korean Soul is huge, plus it’s relatively entertaining in itself, attracting attention including patriotic pathos, albeit somewhat funny.

A clone of the original Robotron, Llamatron uses the same principle but ups the action level, graphics and sound. For those who haven't played Robotron, the aim is simply to control you character (in this case a llama), shoot all the various monsters and rescue all the innocents (sheep). Your weapon is always on automatic fire and you shoot in the direction you are facing but if you hold the fire button it locks the gun in that direction allowing you to move around. Various power-ups are presented to you during the game and two-player support is also in there.

Mega Phoenix Creepsoft / Prism Leisure Corporation Plc [top]

This brings the concept of the earlier arcade game Phoenix into the 90s, to the extent that a coin-op version was later made by Gaelco. The game is a single-screen shoot 'em up in which the player moves left to right while shooting several waves. There is a shield function available, which lasts for a short period of time (after which it must recharge to be used again) and it paralyses the craft while active. The first waves consist of several small alien beings in a set pattern, which move down from the fleet towards the player at random intervals- contacts with these kills the player. Deadly phoenixes firing at you come next, followed by the Mega Phoenix itself and then a final boss, before it all repeats with higher difficulty.

MH28 Soft-World International [top]

The simplest scrolling arcade game from Taiwanese manufacturers. But, despite the fact that it is the simplest, it will be quite difficult to complete it even at the very beginning of the game. The game is most likely ported from a console, and it is best to use a joystick to control it. In deep space, a ship of the Earth's fleet was attacked by certain forces. The red-haired girl commanded you: “MH28, prepare for battle. Your task is to reach the command post near the star Daken (達肯星).” This is where the intro with the plot explanation suddenly ends and the gameplay begins. There is nothing in the menu itself, no items - any click takes you directly to the game, which looks extremely simple. Your boat is made in the form of a small rounded ribbed “seed” of green color. The scroller moves from top to bottom. Enemy ships come in different types: simple ones, shooting down or shooting targeted missiles, and there are also those that move chaotically and try to “board” you at the first opportunity. The MH-28 has the ability to attack with various types of shots (use the "Caps Lock" key to fire). You can also pick up bonuses flying from above. Any contact with enemy ships results in the loss of MH28. However, you are given as many as 9 MH28 warships in reserve - this really speaks to the difficulty of the passage. If any of the “lives” is lost, the next one will start from the very beginning of the current stage. The graphics are bright, but do not particularly shine with the finest details. Although the game is considered to be made in Chinese, the gameplay does not have hieroglyphs, or even letters, so it will be quite easy for an unprepared (in terms of language) player to get used to the controls, but it will be very difficult to complete this game creation.

Night Raid Argo Games / Software Creations [top]

This a remake of the classic game Paratrooper on its tenth anniversary. The essence of the game is that we have an anti-aircraft gun and must repel attacks from the air. Above the cannon, transport planes are constantly circling, from which daring paratroopers jump out, capable of four of us climbing onto the roof of our firing point, gathering in a group and lining up on a live staircase, and undermining the weapon. And also there are bonuses - rockets, knocking down which we will get additional points. In shooting at enemies, there is an element of realism: you can shoot down an airplane, kill an enemy landing in the air, or even tear a parachute with a shot - then the pest will not survive, either. For all these brave deeds we get points. But each shot takes one point. This is all there is in the old Paratrooper. But in this game, the number of nice details increased significantly. To begin with, this time it's dressed in attractive graphics. Finally, instead of a black hole, the night sky with the "cheese" moon hangs above us, and in our lair the lights in the windows are lit up. Now airplanes are hovering over us, changing helicopters from the previous incarnation, and over time there are more high-speed models that are harder to hit. Bonuses have now changed from aircraft to rockets. Paratroopers falling from above land more realistically, without standing up on each other’s shoulders as before. The new version also has a humorous element associated with simplifying the gameplay. In Paratrooper, the player was given one continuous round, by eye divided by short breaks. And here the opponents come in waves (in fact, this is the game rounds), which are clearly marked with messages. Such an amusing picture takes place between them: if among the parachutists there are still happy ones landed, they are picked up by a UFO arriving from the moon, and if not, you can see a flying airplane from above with the phone of the game creators on the poster behind the tail. Such moments quite successfully enliven the gameplay.

Pang / Buster Bros. [Ch] Amwa (HK) Computer [top]

Pang is a platform game first in arcades in 1989 which consists of 50 levels in total. It can be played with one or two players on the same screen, and the other player can join anytime within the game. Your goal is to destroy the balloons which bounce around the playfield. To accomplish this, you can shoot hooks which travel upwards, and blow up any balloon they touch. Depending on their size, they either split on two smaller ones, or evaporate if they're at their minimum size. Apart from balloons, some levels also have barriers that have to be destroyed with your hooks, since they often block your access to balloons. There are also some barriers which cannot ever be destroyed. Your character has the ability to climb ladders, but cannot jump. You can also pick up power-ups such as: the ability to fire two shots at once, the hook that attaches to the ceiling and waits 'til something bumps into it, a gun which has a high rate of fire but cannot destroy barriers. Beside extra weapons, you can also pick certain things like clock (halting time for a small period), dynamite (reducing all balls to minimum size, thus making you able to reach more points), life, and such.

Rath-Tha Positive / Prism Leisure Corporation Plc [top]

This is a vertically-scrolling shoot-'em-up. In the far future the human race built a long tube that absorbed all of the rubbish generated by the planets in the system. T'ufo - a planet notorious for its dirtiness - has sent a rat-shaped ship called Rath-Tha to destroy the tube. The game commands a ship to destroy Rath-Tha. The game consists of four phases. Starting off inside the tube, the player fights off swarms of enemies. The ship can be moved to any part of the screen while shooting. Next, there is an area with megatronic generators. In the third phase the ship leaves the tube and reaches outer space. It needs to avoid torrents of waste that are immune to shots. The chemical substance alters the ship's controls. Finally, the ship reaches Rath-Tha and needs to fight inside to destroy the core. There are bonuses such as metal waste that restores shield, trash bags to regain energy, and radioactive canisters for temporary immunity. The player also carries three CODA codes to destroy barriers inside Rath-Tha.

Sandstorm Pod Bay Enterprises / MVP Software, Personal Companion Software [top]

This game, set during the Gulf War, features a series of twenty missions in various Middle East locations. There are three mission types: Scud Defense, Jet Defense and Tomahawk Offensive. The defense-type missions are reminiscent of Missile Command - jets and missiles appear on the screen, and the player must defend cities on the ground by directing defensive fire with the mouse. In the Tomahawk Offensive missions, the situation is reversed - the player is given a target and must hit it by maneuvering a missile around defensive fire, launching it towards the ground as soon as it is lined up with its intended target. The Championship Version is an alternate version of the original Sand Storm. People who registered the shareware version of the original game had a choice to buy an expanded version of the game for an extra fee. It not only includes the original Scuds, Jets and Tomahawk scenarios, it also includes six new levels: Tanks! You must use your tank (located on the left) to destroy the enemy's armed transports (which are on the right side of the screen). Your goal is to destroy at least 50% of the trucks while evading all enemy fire from the transports. The game also included printed instructions and hints, and a free bonus game.

Special Forces Sleepless Knights / MicroProse Ltd. [top]

This is a top-down arcade shooting game with a dash of strategy. It is the sequel to Airborne Ranger. When times are rough, the American people rely on their army. And when times are rough, the American army relies on their special forces. A small group of highly trained, superbly skilled, well-armed and clean-shaven elite soldiers boldly go where no man has gone before. At least no honest man. It lets you control a team of four in a top-down view and setting reminiscent of Jagged Alliance, only that the time ticks continuously. Consequently, strategy and stealth stand back behind Gauntlet-style arcade action. Moving alone or in squad formation, you shoot enemy soldiers and blow up bunkers, always quick to go in and quicker yet to go out. Goals vary from deploying laser targeting systems for air strikes to assassinations to rescue missions; some assignments take place under cover of darkness, with night vision systems coloring the landscape a gloomy green. 16 missions take you to four different parts of the world, from the terrorist's arctic ice to the drug cartel's native jungle. Before hopping into the helicopter, you may choose four soldiers out of eight, each with different special abilities, and equip each one. Reading the text briefings is crucial, as the game won't warn you if you go on a bombing raid without any explosives. Also, the higher the difficulty level you choose, the less accurate is the info that you get on your targets, so you'll have to search the area. Luckily, a detailed map provides an overview. As enemies respawn and ammo depletes, some men may not make it back. Those who do can be awarded medals and promotions, which will boost their morale and increase their stats.

Spellbound! Scetlander Ltd. / Lander Software [top]

One of a series of educational titles from Scetlander, 'Spellbound!' is quite unusual because it is an educational arcade shooter, and not a puzzle or an adventure game. We play as Hal, who is the American cousin of Henrietta (from 'Hooray for Henrietta' and 'Henrietta's Book of Spells' fame). Henrietta asked us to help her in her dealing with Morgana the Morbid. That witch has given her magical wand to a twisted genius Professor Grime - a typical mad scientist - who has concealed it in his safe locked with five locks. Correspondingly, we are to find five keys on five levels: Underground, Underwater, Downtown, Alaska and Space Base. The object of the game is to fly (or swim) a helicopter (or a submarine, or a space ship) through levels filled with obstacles and Professor Grime's henchmen: they shoot at us and we shoot at them, and after they die they leave us each a letter that we have to collect in specific order to spell a certain word (displayed as a task before the start of a level). The game features nice graphics and music, and even some voiceovers.

Star Control II / The Ur-Quan Masters Toys for Bob Inc / Accolade, Inc. [top]

This takes place in the mid-22nd century, 20 years after the conclusion of an interstellar war in which Earth and its allies were defeated and enslaved by the Ur-Quan Hierarchy. The final hope of mankind lies with the survivors of a secret mission stranded on a little-known planet during the last days of the war who avoided being locked beneath the Ur-Quan slave shields. After discovering technology of an ancient race known as the Precursors, they build a new starship and, under your leadership, leave the planet to investigate post-war conditions and, hopefully, free the races enslaved by the Ur-Quan. Combining elements of strategy, action and adventure, the game spans a universe of 500 star systems, more than 3,000 planets and 21 races. The main storyline revolves around a battle for supremacy between two factions of the Ur-Quan. The Kohr-Ah wish to exterminate all other sentient beings while the Kzer-Za believe enslavement or all other races will prevent any threats to the Ur-Quan. Success relies on a mix of skills including creation of alliances with a number of alien races (performing side quests for them), collecting mineral resources to build a combat fleet, trading captured alien life forms for advanced technology and information and winning battles. Interaction with aliens is based on selective response dialogue. Effective conversational skill results in new alliances, acquisition of useful devices and additional side quests while diplomatic errors, though rarely fatal, can impede progress significantly. Action is conducted via a sub-game known as Super-Melee, a direct descendant of the action game Spacewar, with only one ship from each side involved in the battle at any given time, regardless of the relative sizes of the fleets involved. Each race has its own ship design, equipped with a unique weapon and special power ranging from the Earthling Cruiser's point-defense laser and the Orz flying space marines to the Druuge Torch ability to restore its ship energy batteries by burning its own crewmembers. Combat takes place in a wrapping area of space, which may contain a planet and its gravitational field. When one of the combatants' ships is destroyed or flees, another replaces it until all ships on one side have been eliminated. If the flagship escapes, the entire fleet leaves the battlefield but the game ends if it is destroyed. Super-Melee can also be played as a stand-alone game where additional ships become available and teams can include any combination of ships without regard for the main game's political alignments. Two players can engage in battle by sharing the keyboard. The game was released free to the public in 2002 in a revised open source version by its original designers as The Ur-Quan Masters to work on modern o/s along with better graphics and other improvements and it added the option of online multiplayer Melee play. Also, in 2013 a Ur-Quan Masters HD Mod was released with was a HD remake with high resolution mode, new features, & new artwork. This was further enhanced as The Urquan Masters HD Remix in 2015 which fixes some outstanding bugs, improves some of the settings/backgrounds, makes the game easier to run for newbies, and enables the use of the higher-quality remix music from the Precursors remix project.

StarMines II: Planet of the Mines Jari Karjala [top]

This is a single player overhead space shooter. A huge cloud of dangerous objects was discovered in the 25th century. These objects were given the name StarMines. There appeared to be a planet inside the cloud and after many, many attempts the first explorer made it through to the planet and survived to tell the tale. The planets inhabitants were long gone but they left behind an artifact guarded by strange and dangerous things together with the fabulous Bonusoid crystals. The player commands a small space craft with unlimited fuel and ammunition. The objective is to fly around each level, avoiding or destroying the alien objects and collect the crystals while searching for the portal to the next level. There are twelve increasingly difficult levels in this game. They introduce new elements such as gun turrets, artifacts which release waves of bombs in response to being shot, invulnerable items, anti matter crates etc.

XAP Sean Wachob [top]

Another almost unknown horizontal side-scroller (fly-box with side view), apparently of shareware-origin (the only version available at the moment includes four levels). There is no plot at all; the whole point of the game is to fly from left to right across the screen, collecting bonuses and destroying hostile robotic aliens, trying to survive and - if possible - to increase the number of points we gain. The futuristic fighter that is under our control has a certain (rather decent) "safety margin" (represented by a very colorful strip), and from one enemy shot it will not perish - that is, the game is not too complicated. The diversity of our enemies in this kingdom of technocracy is not very encouraging: these are several types of flying ships, differing in color, size and sometimes form. Much more pleased with the stylistics of the levels themselves - so, the battles take place both in space and directly on the planets - as well as bosses, the fights with which the levels come to an end. Not only that these bosses, in contrast to ordinary opponents, are truly colorful (as for you, for example, a giant yellow skull with a protruding brain, shooting missiles from the jaw and eyes?), So still and truly dangerous and strong, having the ability to fire simultaneously in a multitude of directions, so that dodging is quite problematic. Graphics, and even more so for shareware games, surprisingly good - causes a satisfied smile as the aforementioned variety of backgrounds, and the clarity with which some details of the design are displayed.
