Would implementing the account authentication system on the forums to fend off spammers/scammers be a good idea?

Concerns

Post by Nightweaver »

There seems to be an alarming amount of people signing up to the board with useless "internet casino/pharmacy/sex" advertisements as their signature and home page, and are posting replies to posts with things that do not pertain to the topic at hand. My guess is that it's either a advert-bot(s), or someone that REALLY doesn't want to make sense.

I elected to do some research, and I noticed something quite alarming in the members list.

I gather that you can see the pattern, of course. But what's even more disturbing, is that "office9139", unlike the other zero-post people, actually replied to topics and the like. Although the replies show little or no relevance to the topic that is replied to, it still is an intriguing turn of events. Are the bots getting smarter!?

One way to keep these zero-post spammers out, is to implement the account authentication system in the phpBB.

I just wanted to bring this to the attention of all members of the forum, and more importantly, the moderators. :D

Legends World, in my opinion, is one of the gems of the internet. I am willing to help in any way possible. And after I get a better connection, I may possibly be able to upload for 3DSL/AdvLegends.

Three cheers for Legends World!

Yeah seems you're right...we noticed this in past months as well.
A bunch were deleted when we remove accounts with zero posts.
If there are nonsense posts being automatically done then account verification will be the way to go definitely.

I stand corrected. x3

Another wonderful work of an advertisement spider has hit the board again.

Agree!

ideas:
I know other boards where the members have to introduce themselfs in a special area.If that not happens within one week (couple of days), the account gets deleted. Well thats of course some kind of "0posting deleting" filter. The advantage is that a board becomes much more personal.

I also like the idea of introducing. I mean: it doesn't hurt. Also it would surely help the community to become a bit more personal (like stated above) which I'd prefere. And it would save us of those %&"!!-bots.

Introducing and verification would work wonders, not only help our community even more. :D

Actually, we banned the IP range the bots were coming from, and implemented a user registration verification system which will hopefully deter some bot activity.
