You guys played the FEAR 2 demo?

Post by level1900 »

I really liked the original FEAR and I was very anxious to try the new Project Origin, so I downloaded the PC demo. At first I played using the (low) settings the game recommended for my machine, which were completely wrong and I was shocked to discover I could achieve 60 fps at 1280x800 with nearly maximum detail - score +1 for the superlight graphics engine.
I was also surprised by the fact that the game bears little resemblance to the original FEAR. Yes, the enemies and weapons remind of those from the prequel, but AI and animations are way worse: enemies will often stand still or turn their backs on you, making it very easy to clear out a room full of them. I liked how they take cover behind anything, even knocking over furniture and opening car doors to use them as makeshift shields (which you can do as well), although they tend to repeat their movement patterns a bit too often and even use absurd items like small tables or piles of books for cover. Another thing that's gone is the spookyness factor: everything is more colorful and the occasional jump scares are not the least frightening (I know it's just half a level and it's too early to say, but it's just not spooky: I felt more like I was playing Half-Life 2 more than FEAR). Also, the constant motion blur is sickening, though it can be turmed off. You can now carry four weapons with no category limitation (whew) and they all pack quite a good punch, except the grenades, which sound and feel pretty weak.

All in all, it looks good, I'm looking forward to it, though it's not quite the game I was imagining. But enough with my rants: what did you think about this demo?

Perseus Mandate ran better on my lame machine that either FEAR or Extraction Point. The engine must have been optimized. Does FEAR 2 use the same engine as Perseus Mandate?

Fear is well over rated, I played a few levels to see what all the fuss was about and it was simply boring... theres a lot better out there..

I find myself replaying this series of games more than any of the others I have. I like it's difficulty, it's like a single player tactical shooter. You have to be very methodical, or you'll get killed very fast. No John Waynes here, you've got to be sneaky and a good shot, because the bad guys are sneaky and good shots (well, except for their chatter which gives them away). It's main weakness is a lack of variaty, there's a sameness to all the levels. Clearing rooms, clear factory floors, clearing wearhouses, etc.

I don't have Perseus Mandate, but I suppose it uses an improved version of the original engine. I can tell you the engine in FEAR 2 is 100% different from the original FEAR.

Playing now on high quality, the game is another console port victim. Menu is annoying and you cant change gfx settings ingame. Gameplay is ehm, hard to say yet... mapping is OK atlast.

From the screenshots I've seen I though it looked like a console game... The popularity of game consoles has been very bad for PC gaming, they look pretty good, but the gameplay is always simple and shallow. FarCry 2 was like that too. It's the 'Halo' effect all over again.

I agree. One thing I noticed about console ports: there's no leaning function. FarCry2, FEAR 2, Call of Duty 4... none has leaning, but Far Cry, FEAR and Call of duty 1&2 had it. Also, they don't have the slow walk button. Rather annoying.
