DNF in good shape?
I’m sure most of you have watched the recent DNF footage shown in that Jace Hall video at 3D Realms. Not exactly showing itself off as ‘the most awesome game ever’ like it was in the classic 2001 trailer.
I know it is just a few minutes of stodgy video footage, but this thing looks like it is running on a modified id Tech 4 engine! That wouldn’t surprise me either, since they licensed that for Prey. While on Prey, that game P’oed me, big time. It was like the ultimate “screw you” to all patiently waiting Duke fans. 3D Realms couldn’t even bring Prey to fruition on their own, having to enlist the ex Raven guys at Human-Head to put it together. At least they got it done.
It seems like a lot of people working on DNF have still been (understandably) jumping ship, as 3D Realms as still looking for new map makers! If I knew there was no light at the end of the tunnel, I wouldn’t want to stick around either.
They (3D Realms) have made it no secret either that they will be pushing for a simultaneous release on the PC & Xbox 360, if they ever got it together. They have started from scratch so many times, it seems like they are just going backwards.
My final thoughts are in the beginning Broussard wanted Forever to be the ultimate FPS, and for it to do everything new, and completely different from every other FPS. But Half-Life, and other games came along, and did those things in the meantime while they were sitting on DNF, and the rest is, as they say, history.

On the forum, they have made it clear many times, that the game runs on a heavy-modified unreal egine.
The have completly rewritten the renderer, and added many new things, so you can almost speak of a new engine.....
Look on the forums of Duke Nukem Forever at the 3D Realms website.... you can find all information there, regarding the game.....

Anyone else disappointed by the few frames they saw? Yeah I know, it's too early to judge, and Broussard himself said that you can't really say anything about the game from what you saw.
It's just that it was soooo made to look like every other horror shooter out there. Total overkill of effects, so dark that you can't see how bad the levels look. It seems like it totally lacks any detail. And the details were what made the environments of Duke3D so interesting.
If anything is going to make DNF a failure after its release, its probably because the soul of its predecessors will have been taken away, in order to make another Doom 3 or Prey or whatever, so that the masses can digest it without having to adapt to something new.

Yeah. I would agree with that.If anything is going to make DNF a failure after its release, its probably because the soul of its predecessors will have been taken away, in order to make another Doom 3 or Prey or whatever, so that the masses can digest it without having to adapt to something new.
3D Realms got a lot of positive feedback for Prey, which is basically just a corridor shooter with some nice tricks added in. I certainly didn’t think it was anything revolutionarily. But this seems to be just enough for the average gamer, and most critics too it would seem.
I played Crysis earlier this year, and while the technical execution is very well done, it doesn’t stray far from what was set down by Half-Life almost a decade ago. It arguably takes the best elements from past shooters, and merges them into the one game. Innovation is more or less put out to pasture.
I think it was last year Broussard said they hired a consultant for the DNF project to put everything into ‘perspective’. What this basically says is making the game within certain constraints, whether technically or creatively. Putting a bottle neck on the ambitiousness of the project in a nutshell.
I think, hypothetically of course, if the game ever came out, it would sell ^&*# loads regardless of the quality of the final product. I still think it would be basically a fun game, but it just wouldn’t rock your world like it could have all those years ago.
I really want them to prove me wrong, but I have serious doubts.

I also must agree...
I have been following the DEV through all these years, and I am not sure what to expect. I think they will have a hard time to please the fans which still think about Duke 3D, and the impact it had , at that time.
I must say that I liked the small trailer, and video parts which were released the last months.... I do not look at the graphics as the main factor for success, I really want to now about the interactivity, and the main plot....
But as these facts are still unknown, it's a wild guess what to expect...
I am pretty sure, 3D Realms know what they are doing, so i don't think that it will dissapoint.....

There's something else I have noticed: Yes, I am less excited about DNF then I was 7 years ago when the E3 trailer came out. But unfortunately it's not just that the excitement has worn off over the years - it's actually that what I have seen in the 2001 trailer would, even today, be more exciting to me than how things seem to be now. I would not care if the game looked like it did in 2001 if only it was still as ambitious as it was back then.Doomed_Space_Marine wrote:I still think it would be basically a fun game, but it just wouldn’t rock your world like it could have all those years ago.

Idiots are just like the weather. You have to live with it.
I do think it will come out during the next 12 months or so.. what else would they keep the Duke fans warm for? They're a company and sooner or later they have to sell something. I don't think they could go on much longer like this... it's not the same as the last 10 years, because for the first time they're not just denying everything anymore. And they even let someone external play it, and record playing it.
But they probably blew that "pwns all other games" thing a long time ago. Expectations are now so high that it can only be a disappointment for most people, I guess.
And maybe by now they have also figured out that they cannot always stay on top of technology
It sure is a completely messed up management... a bit sad to see what has become of Apogee

I must admit, in regards to DNF, 3D Realms have been delivering what they have been promising in the last few months. When they put up that teaser video, they said they would show more of the game in coming months. And guess what? They did.I do think it will come out during the next 12 months or so.. what else would they keep the Duke fans warm for? They're a company and sooner or later they have to sell something.
After watching the latest video it did pass through my mind that there was at least a very outside chance they would produce a game within the next year. But, the game has been in development hell since 1997, and 3D Realms seem to be financially secure without releasing it. Maybe they make enough moolah from sales of ancient Apogee label games, and hocking old wares on digital distribution networks like Duke 3D on xbox live. I don’t know. Your guess is as good as mine.
It has been absolutely forever since 3D Realms brought a game out from the in-house team. I think the last game they even finished on their own was Shadow Warrior. Though the dev on that wasn’t nearly as tumultuous as DNF, the same thing that happened with SW which is seemingly happening with DNF. Shadow Warrior started its life as Ninja Master in 1993, and didn’t make it out until 1997. The final game is rather a more by-the-numbers shooter than it was originally, -, e.g., in an earlier dev there were cool ninja weapons like the blowpipe & crossbow, and the enemies weren’t all monsters like in the final product. The game seemed much more distinctive before, but in the end was very much more like every other shooter by the time it was released. The same goes for BLOOD - I read in an old 1995 Apogee catalogue that in BLOOD you were meant to collect the souls of enemies in order to metamorphosis into a raging beast-creature, among other more innovative things which never made the final cut.
I think there is perhaps some chance DNF will be released, as 3D Realms have conceded that it is not trying to be the greatest FPS of all time. But all anyone can do is speculate. The latest in-game video footage admittedly doesn't give you much cause to cheer for, I must say.
I also think the game shown in the 2001 trailer - completely just exactly as it is - would be the most incredibly fun game ever, and would leave everything else around for skids. Bar none. I guess Duke just may have missed the boat by more than ten years. Only time will tell . . .
