First impressions on Wolfenstein (2009)

Post by Trey »

I don't get the impression that I'm playing a ground breaking game, nothing really new here, but having said that it's presented well. Graphics look nice, but not exceptional. There are gameplay elements you'll recognize from earlier games, Prey comes to mind. Along with the normal WW2 combat there are supernatural artifacts that provide different power you can also use, slow-time, etc. You are also able to upgrade your weapons and artifacts at black market vendors. Allies give you your 'quests' that move the game along. You have a compass with a star (of whatever) that points the way to objectives (Call of Duty). As in Return To Castle Wolfenstein you can collect hidden secrets, items and gold. The gold can be used to buy the upgrades. There's a game map now that you can access that shows blackmarkets, safehouses, and the like, also you are able to scroll, and zoom in and out. Gameplay is not seamless. When you move from one area to the next you trigger cinamematics. I do have to say the cinematatics are top notch.

On the downside, mouse lag is really bad, and I can't find a config file anywhere. There must be a way to tweak it but I haven't found it yet. Also it's a little buggy, not in a way that effects the game just annoying things like characters giving speechs to you, but not looking at you. Characters talking about you among themselves at full volume when you're standing right next to them. I suppose they're things you are supposed to accidentally 'overhear', but it's not done well.

I expect a patch or two in the future.

and you know what LULZ, each gaming magazine and internet review site blames PC for how crap this game is calling it a "failed port for console" .... guess they have a kind of different definition of a game build from ground UP on the Doom3 engine for Xbox360 to be later ported to the PC

oh and you know that DAY BEFORE they released this game they allready had a patch ready 1.1

Unfortantely it looks as though the game is a train wreck on pc. And made especially for consoles with little regard to PC controls. The fact that Endurant (who made the MP portion) was disbanded just after release does not speak well of the expectations for this game. =(

Can't find it, that's the problem. Maybe I can force it though.

All in all, it's really not a bad game. It's not a disaster like 'Turning Point' and althought it feels a bit like a ported game, it's doesn't have that too linear feel.

I downloaded and played this game for half an hour. Oh boy what a shitty game that is. Man, they have been making it for a million years now, but it didnt help. I bet Rage and their other titles will turn out as crappy as this one.

I've actually planned to buy this, but now I'm in doubts. I had a quick look at the game official board and there are quite a lot of rant-threads, people complaining about multiplayer most of all.

In the view of this mouse lag issue, I was wondering if you can use a XBOX360 controller with this game (without having to use a third party game-profiler).

PS: Yeah, I know, nothing beats Mouse+Keyboard.... blah, blah, blah....

Wireless Xbox 360 conroller works great with native support. I find most new "games for windows" titles play really well with the controller. I used to use mouse and keyboard. But sitting back and using a controller is much easier now. ( ESP when hooking the PC up to the WS TV ). :)

Rage and Doom 4 are being made by id while Wolfenstein was made by Raven. Of course, you know still id's games are always going to be well produced with solid enough gameplay, but the emphasis is always on the tech with little or no innovations in the play.

I haven't bothered looking at Wolfenstein yet because I know they (Raven) would take no risks . . bullet-time {yawns}

Probably Stalker Call of Pripyat and Dead Island are the most anticipated games for me this year.

I'm playing Stalker SHoC Oblivion Lost Mod now and it's effing awesome :D

Dead Island, this year ? Where did you read that ? For now, I just know Techland is still working on it, and there are chances that Dead Island will be out before Warhound and Chrome 2, if one of the titles come out one day.

Yeah, but lets not forget Doom3 which was developed by ID and this game sucks major balls. Nothing comes out good from ID & friends anymore.

ok I just finished the game and here is my mini review.

negative:

*the introduction of rpg elements, it tried to be like Bioshock, but I dont think that is needed. All they had to do is to upgrade RTCW graphics and introduce a new storyline. Now we wont see a new Wolf untill 2020 or at all.
*fu c ked up FOV
*no console commands support
*crappy weapons
*messed up sprint headbob which makes me motion sick a little, my eyes get tired
*crappy console style levels
*the music which is worse than in RTCW
*crappy sound design
*cheesy dialogs
*flat boring gameplay
*encrypted game archives
*veil sucks
*I'm not a graphics whore, but this game has graphics of 2001 with 2 new shaders.

positive:

*compass - without it I would probably waste even more time on this shit
*nazi grunts animations
*not many bugs

6/10 And I havent even tried MP yet. Raven employes should be fired.
