Magic: the Gathering from Microprose - resources?

Post by Smiling Spectre »

Anyone know how to extract graphic resources from MPS' MtG?

I see "pic", but no one graphic editor/viewer can handle it.

There is several MPS-specific viewers, but it can handle 16-256 colors only, because it's for older MPS games. It still works, but results is strange coloured and handled.

There is also big .cat packs, that can be unpacked, for example, with Game Explorer, but I suspect, GE make it wrong, and result files still can't be viewed from any known for me viewer. Can anyone help with this?

If you want the card art I believe you can access card art for everything on Wizards' website. Though I dont know how you would access that in an easy way.

Thank you, I_AM, I know it. :) There is also art packs for such products as Magic Suitcase here and there, and I have it. :) But actually I want to access original database for two reasons:

1. It is not a secret, that MPS have several "exclusive" cards (Astral set in particulary), that was made especially for this game. And art database have more, than was enabled in last edition - so it is possible to acquire true exclusive art from it. Or maybe not. :)
2. It is sort of personal. :) I want to crack this base already five years, and simply access to similar content not the same as gain access to original base. :)

There is a fan made patch called version 1.32

Code: Select all

MICROPROSE MAGIC THE GATHERING & MANALINK UNOFFICIAL UPDATE
				Version 1.3.2
		       by Mok <mok666>

This is 2nd release of an unofficial MPS Magic: The Gathering update.
It will allow direct TCP/IP connections over the internet, enable
all the expansion cards regardless of your version and add some
small modifications to the game. Questions/comments are welcome.
This makes the game run in XP too. You already know about this ?
I can upload if you want, not sure where to find it anymore otherwise.

Thank you, I_AM, I know about it. Game unplayable without it even on Win98 (too much of speed in Shandalar), and not work at all under XP. Patch is easest to obtain on the Underdogs.

I worked out also my own "Application Compatibility Toolkit patch", that fixed for me only remained error (two errors, to be honest :) - invisible font in several variated texts and force 1024x768, because game crashes in higher resolution.

The Application Compatibility Toolkit is a nice thing, I've used it for some other games. Shame it's not possible to just tweak those settings within Windows itself, rather than need to install a seperate app.
