Hexen 2 is unpatchable

Post by Soul Reaver »

Well, I guess this is the cost of downloading the game... but it seems that the Hexen 2 that I downloaded from nestlesux's page cannot be patched. It's version 1.03 (the oldest one), and the 1.11 patch doesn't work when I try to apply it - it says something like "The game is not properly installed" when I try to apply the patch.

Just in case... is there anything I can do about this? Reading the patch changes makes it look like not applying it will leave the game with quite a few very stupid bugs... : /

Mmmmm....it wouldn't be just that rip that is unpatchable - most rips are not because they have cracked exe's which are different from the original ones that the patch needs to modify.
Generally you would need the original exe for a pach to work on it.

I just upped an ISO version (without CD audio tracks) that will be posted on the site at the end of the week. You might have better luck with that.

Uh... well, I'm back, after trying that patch...

Hate to be the voice of doom here, but that didn't work at all.

I tried the patch - replaced the .exe files like it said in the readme, added the file to the registry, then ran glh2.exe. Although it certainly said it was the new version and everything seemed to be working fine, the moment I tried to start the game it hung up, stating that "progs.dat system vars have been modified, progdefs.h is out of date". After that I could only close it by control+alt+deleting to bring up the task manager and closing Hexen 2 that way. At least before I could get into the game, buggy though it may have been - now I couldn't even do that.

Well, no problem, I thought. The readme mentioned that maybe the game wouldn't start and that I should go into video options and change the video mode there. Well, that turned out to be futile as well - because, just as the game had always done, the video options screen seemed stuffed when running in gl mode - you couldn't select or change anything, and some of the text overlapped in an odd way - that's the same with another rip I had of this long ago (from somewhere else) and was like that pre-patch as well, so I suspect it's ALWAYS like that... I thought maybe the patch would fix it, but it still looks the same. So yeah, I couldn't get that suggested solution to work either.

But maybe I could run it in software mode?

Nope, no such luck. In fact, it worked worse in software mode than in GL mode. I couldn't even get into the menu this time - I immediately got a black screen that completely froze my computer and I couldn't even control+alt+delete out of.

So now I can't start the game properly at all anymore. Any idea what the errors mean and what I can do about them?

well, i copied just exe files from my rip of original CD version.
looks like some files needs to be updated.
it worked fine with other rip releases, you should have real outdated version ;P
oki, so there is no problem i think, i uploaded the missing files here:

http://independent-software.jareks.net/ ... update.exe

just copy there pak0.pak and pak1.pak (into /data1/ dir), then go play!

Great, that worked. Hexen 2 seems to be patched and working properly now. :)

Might be a good idea for someone to upload this patch onto the server. I downloaded Nestlesux's version of Hexen 2, so it might pay to make a note that that file is needed to patch that version up to current.

Thanks heaps Speed, I'm glad the game's working now. Now I'll get to work on downloading Portals of Praevus... :P
