German Metal

Post by Mister_Headcrab »

A couple of days a go I came across some old records of german metal bands, I started to listen to them and... wow!! those bands were freaking awesome, real rock baby!!
You know, I'm tired of that crap they've been giving us in the last years (metal mixed with hip-hop SUCKS).
Since most of the members of this forum are from Germany, I'd appreciate it if you guys posted info about german metal bands (and also bands from other countries in europe), I just want to expand my collection of "real" rock.
Just remember, don't post anything that resembles shitty bands like korn or limp-bizkit!! This is all about real rock.

Here's a good example of a great band (watch and learn kids):

LOL! I smoked pot with Kreator on their tour bus outside a shitty dive in Philadelphia called The Empire. :D Ah, the old days... I don't even listen to US metal anymore, it's almost %100 crap now. What we probably think of as 'Metal' or 'Thrash', like Nuclear Assault, Kreator, Helloween, Overkill, VoiVoid is dead. It's all either that 'Nu-metal' type crap or Death/Black Metal. I can't take very much of either of them. The really interesting things going on in metal have been the unusual sub-genres, like 'Folk-metal', 'Prog-metal' or 'Opera-metal'. The early Nightwish albums are amazing (before they had a falling out with Operatic singer), the band Therion hit their high point with an album called 'Deggial', Opeth does some really haunting 'Prog-metal' songs, but they switch back and forth between real singing for the Prog-type songs and Cookie-Monster type vocals for their 'Metal' songs. I wish they'd stick to the Prog stuff, it's amazing. If you're looking for oldfasioned-type metal try a band called DragonForce, they're really good.

Don't go getting all touchy. Of couse there's German metal, just like there's British Metal, Japanese Metal, Brazilian Metal, US metal was responsible for 'Nu-Metal'... Your welcome. It's not about the language, it's about the 'Style'. We just don't kill people over it like 'True Norwegen Black Metal' guys...

Hey Mister_Headcrab,

I am not familiar with much German metal, but have you heard eMKay? The song ‘Save me’ which is the menu track for the Russian shooter ÜberSoldier, is really awesome! When I was playing this game, I would just sit at the title & listen for a half hour. Now I listen to it on my Mp3 player all the time. Really cool song. It comes in ogg format with the uncut game crack if you want to check it out.

Cheers :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:G ... cal_groups

And now (drum roll) Trey's picks...

Atrocity is inconsistant, but often brilliant
Blind Guardian Power-metal, a little too showy for my tastes but real good
Crematory you wouldn't think it with a name like that, but they've got some beautiful songs
Demons & Wizards Power-metal again, sometimes catchy
Edguy very popular under ground, classic, slightly gothic
Helloween yep, still around after all these years
In Extremo German folk-metal, bagpipes, strings, crazy outfits, interesting
Leaves Eyes female singer fronted, not bad, I think their songs tend to be a little weak
Rammstein the last of the Industrial-metal bands, there last album was still good, they haven't lost it yet
Scorpions what can you say? classic metal now
Sodom maybe the first of the 'cookie-monster' singer bands
Vanden Plas prog-metal, well respected
Falkenbach viking/folk-metal, sometimes very good

Classic power/thrash metal bands:
Accept 'balls to the wall' :D
Destruction
Grave Digger
Mob Rules
Primal Fear
Rage
Sacred Steel

All I have to say is Dragonforce isn't oldfasioned-type metal for me, it totally sound 21st century. Also, Accept is more heavy.

About the youtube link, it sounds a bit like Metallica (at least on Kill 'em all album) and Slayer (maybe early albums too).
I'm sure dead-meat, that german guy, could say more about trash metal.

I didn't mean their 'sound' so much as their musicality, and their showmanship.

True, but since their high point was the 80s too I didn't want to leave them out.

not really metal i think. Neue Deutsche Härte to be completely correct. and in this area they are not the last ones, here we still have some, e.g. Eisbrecher.

Thanks for replying folks.
Honestly, I thought I was the only one who was going "nostalgic" and longing for this kind of music. Now, it's great to see that there's still plenty of oldskool-metal fans out there :)
Trey, thanks for the list. I searched for more info about DragonForce (never heard of them before) and it turned out to be a pretty cool band, quite classic sound.

Keep up guys!

Rammstein calls themselves 'Tanz-metall' (dance-metal), I think they're just trying to be cute, they're obviously more 'Industrial'.

I also left out a gothic band I like called 'Dreadful Shadows', they're heavier than most goth bands and probably qualify as 'metal'.

Just for fun let me show you the 'metal-est' song I've heard in the last 5 years. This song is 'metal' like Liberachi was 'gay', even Manowar would think this is too 'metal'.
http://www.last.fm/music/Dream+Evil/_/The+Book+of+Heavy+Metal+(March+of+the+Metallians)
btw - the player's in the top right corner. Metal-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l!

It's funny that you use that song as an example, because they're totally screwing around. That's their tongue-in-cheek tribute to metal. Great band though. I have all their albums.
