Titanic Adventure Out of Time vista issue

Post by onawire »

Every time I try to play this game it crashes on Vista 32.

I did make sure I used the compatibility tab. I set the following files setup.exe, titanic.exe, ti.exe to Windows XP sp2 (b/c when I tried 98/ME and 95 it wouldn't open complaining about some kind of memory problem).

So I got the game going and I would be able to play it for a very short time but all of a sudden a message box would pop up, interrupting the game, and say ti.exe has stopped responding / or rather it's crashed - same thing. Is there any way I can possibly fix this? It mostly happens when I'm talking to the characters but it has happened when I'm walking the ship too.

I've also tried checking every box in the compatibility mode, not checked any boxes, and checked some but not others. Nothing seems to be fixing the crashing problem. When I had played this on my XP computer (which I don't have anymore) it never gave me any problems. So I'm thinking it's Vista being a pain.

I'm not sure what they're talking about in the 2nd link about
"5. Vista cannot read the icon file from 16bit applications, use the included icon in the ‘Updates’ folder for your shortcut if you want."
And from this one..
"8. Run in daemon tools for best results, use dual drives and load both cd’s to prevent switching issues."
I'm running the game from the actual CDs. Is that gonna be a problem with the setup and vista?

I originally installed the standard version because I always installed that version (I've never installed the directx even on XP). And I figured installing the directx version would reek more havoc on vista considering it's directx files are extremely outdated.

I guess I can give this a try, but unfortunately I have no idea what directx files to back up. Can't I just redownload directx from the microsoft website and re-install over the outdated version later? Also, where is the directx folder on Vista Home Premium. I can't seem to find it.

This might not be the answer you're looking for, but anyway: you can install Win98 in for instance VirtualPC2007 or VMWare. A lot of older games that are 'difficult' under XP/Vista will run troublefree there.
Initially a bit of work, but saves a lot of time and frustration in the long run

I don't think that will work with my computer. I don't see anything on that page that says Vista 32. Mine is:

Vista Home Premium
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20 GHz
Memory (RAM): 2.00GB
System: 32-bit

Yes it will, even on my old XP Home (512 MB 1,7 GHz) it works fine although that's officially not supported.

Well, I got Windows 98 installed with VirtualPC2007. Unfortunately, I have no sound. During installation it kept asking for the Windows 98 disc during the sound setup and obviously it was already in the drive. So now I have no idea what to do. And I seriously don't want to play a game without sound. :x

Have you installed the VPC Additions? I'm not sure if that will solve your sound issue, but it might and is very useful anyway for for instance a shared folder with the host OS
If no luck, try installing the sound drivers manually - check your Win98 Device Manager to see if you need this one:

http://download.cnet.com/3001-2120_4-10 ... 1911567f64
(Don't use the big green 'Download Here' square, but the small blue 'click here' link instead)

I gave up and made a new drive and installed XP. The game is working perfect and I have sound and everything!

My final (hopefully!) question is how do you uninstall a drive? I want to remove the Win98 drive correctly. I printed out that first site you sent me to, but there's nothing about how to remove a virtual drive and OS.

Glad it worked out OK in the end!

Remove it from the VPC console and then simply delete the Win98 .vmc and .vhd
Tip: keep a back up of your XP .vmc and .vhd - should things get messed up you can replace your virtual XP in about 5 seconds
