Labirynth of Crete

Post by Smiling Spectre »

I have strange problem with Labirynth of Crete, taken from link of this site (CUE/BIN image). Two problems, actually.

1. Game marked as "XP-compatible" on most sites (taken from HotU, I presume), but it don't work at all for me under XP. It made several "protection error: XXXX" with several different addresses as XXXX (but I know how to fix it), then run at last... white screen, and that's all. ntvdm+wow.exe+labrynth.exe have 50% of my dual-core processor, but everything firmly hangs. Is this game truly compatible with XP? If yes, then how?

2. Under Virtual PC+Win98SE it seems running well... but have strange issue - mouse cursor is visible in addition to main, "star" cursor, and they don't synchronized! They are in one point on the top of the screen, but lower I go, more gap between it. So last line (string with "QUIT-CONTINUE-SAVE-LOAD") not accessible at all. :( Game therefore unplayable.

What I did wrong?

Have you tried the Compatibility mode for Win 95 or Win 98 in XP?

I tried everything, ACT included. One ACT fix (something WOW-related) removed protection error... but it is all.

I noticed on Vista, cursor problems on old games can occur if u have an app running like a desktop sidebar so turn off any apps when trying to run game.

1. Is it LoC works for you on XP? Just in case that it is my particular problem, not game's. :)

2. It is Virtual Win98SE. There is nothing, except Windows, there. But...

Doesn't work natively on my XP, but runs OK under VPC+Win98 or Win3.1
I've also got a 'rip' with integrated DOSBox+win3.1 - just unrar and play directly under XP and probably Vista/Win7 too. It's only about 90 MB packed; if you like I can up it to see if that works for you?

Thank you. But, if it is included emulated Win3.1, then I suppose, I don't need it. I already have DOSBox and full game. So I need only Win 3.1, it seems... :)

Another question: are you sure it worked as intended under VPC+Win98? I say again: in my case there is de-sync between "real" mouse cursor and "in-game" one, that renders game unplayable. Game itself work, but controls actually unavailable.

Sorry, my mistake! I get the exact same few cm gap in virtual Win98; it's in virtual Win95 where there is no problem
Runs smoothest in DosBox+Win3.11 though - on my pc anyway

Thank you. :) I'll found Win3.11 and check it. :)
