It's an amazing viewing experience!
It's like you are inside the world with the characters. The camera is almost always moving so your field of view is always changing with items in background and popping up in front.
The story is predictable and dialogue is generic but the experience of seeing the world is amazing. This will be the future of movies...the viewer is part of the action.
I think the reason they used alien creatures is they can move much faster obviously when they are animated so the action moving in the forest and on flying creatures is really spectacular. Have fun!
Looks good - was it in stereoscopic 3D or anaglyphic ( red and green glasses)? According to $ony steroscopic 3D is the big push for 2010 ,with all PS3's getting a firmware update. Of course you need a 3D capable TV and shutter glasses which is quite expensive. I also read that they have now made a TV that produces full colour stereoscopic 3D images without the need of any glasses- current prices are around $30 000 - but this will come down in time. Sounds amazing with projected images coming up to 5M out of the screen.
I'm very naive. Something I don't get is, 3D has been here for a while.
Since the 1950's?? Why are people calling it new? 3D television iis rther new though.
It wasn't red/blue so i assume stereoscopic...guy in theater said not to steal the glasses as they are expensive. They were collected as people walked out.
The thing with 3d in the past was that it was a gimmick to throw items on screen at people to make them flinch. With Avatar, the depth of perception used in the 3D animated world makes you feel like you are there. The characters jump around among tree limbs and it's beautiful scenery and amazing action at the same time. Animals are crashing through trees, there's real actors in helicopters and walking mechs, explosions, fire, arrows and creatures flying.

The glasses weren't collected at the place I saw it so I took them home. Ticket prices were the equivalent of an extra US$3 over the regular ticket price because of the 3D. I guess that is what the glasses cost.
The main Na'vi characters were played by real actors like the attractive Zoe Saldaña who played the female lead Neytiri. I wish I knew more about how they put the film together.
Just seen in 3D - very nice looking movie. The 3D they use is a subtle polarised 3D. It is way better than the Red/Blue glasses type - the colour is true and the effect is good. I guess for the comfort of most people the 3D depth in cinema is set quite low , and although the effect is good there are few,if any, "out of the screen effects."
I have Nvidia stereoscopic 3D on the PC and have tried the Avatar game demo on it. With this you have some really fantastic effects and I even found myself ducking to avoid overhanging branches.
If you see the movie go for the 3D version. As Scaryfun says it is a real experience and the way of the future.
Damn. Unfortunately, to reach to closest iMax, I have to cross the valley of eternal flames, the forest of entanglement and the razor mountains (meaning it's 80 miles away, so not worth it ).
