Some thoughts on Combat sims - The hunt for the best!

Post by pincopallo73 »

Today I have started a discussion with Rastan Saga on good old Combat sims (flight and not)...

It all started from Mig Alley (a real simulation of korean War - not always "real" and "simulations" are a contradiction in terms). Then we went into Falcon Saga and Il-2 Sturmovik Saga

Now I propose to continue the discussion...

The idea is to remember, and why not ask for some uploads, these really good old simulations.

Rastan Saga spoke in his last post to me about Team Apache: Air Assault: I don't know anything about it... but instead I would like to suggest him, and nayone Enemy Engaged saga

Enemy engaged - Apache - Havoc
http://www.mobygames.com/game/enemy-engaged-apachehavoc

Enemy engaged - Comanche - Hokum
http://www.mobygames.com/game/enemy-eng ... a-52-hokum

I suggest in particular the last one because some modders have done a great job in modifying and updating the game engine...
The result can be seen here:

http://www.simhq.com/_air4/air_150a.html

The mod can be downloaded here:
http://www.eechcentral.com/

Owners of both games (apache - havoc & comanche - hokum can join them into one!!!! and fly all the 4 helicopters)

but my question is... any suggestion for best - real - combat simulations?

I am in an internet cafe and I have a little time. You ask which is the best. This is my first flight simulator while I have an Amiga

http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/fa-18-interceptor
F/A-18 Interceptor is Amiga only game but this is an interesting piece, you must really try this game with an Amiga emulator. The scenario is very addictive and not ordinary (for sims). I spend very long time with this game. It offering short, relatively easy but addictive gameplay. I want write a lot of things about this sim but my english is not enough for some technical terms. So when you have download and play, you will see that thing; simple is beatiful. Simple rooster ( not rooster, correct word is c.ckpit, HHAHAHAH ) design for F-16 and F-18, simple vector graphs, simple (almost silence) sounds but I dont know, this is my beloved sim. Definitely this is my first "real" virtual reality experience. Amiga 500 was an amazing comp.

And look;
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/panzer-commander
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/l ... -simulator
You must have a joystick for Luftwaffe Commander. Controls are problematic but when you will be familiar you like this.
Panzer Commander is a very simple but atmospherical tank sim. Good graphics and super sounds, very bad AI with mediocre mission design like all other SSI games. This a average sim but I dont know why I love it.
These two games was to be criticized a magazine (90's) by me.

If you like Jagged Alliance 2 or X Com (no I would not like X Com series,never, but the JA is different) style turn based tactical game, here is an another SSI treasure;
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/soldiers-at-war
This is a very problematic and hardest game. It need a patch but it was never released.

And dont forget to examine Panzer Elite, of course not that idiotic arcade version, you may try 2001 SE version. I havent got this version so I cant test it. I have got standart 1999 version.

You can look F-16 Aggressor, Combat Air Patrol (Amiga) etc. But you must stay away from "İ" series moronic simulations. Interactive Magic was a worst publisher by our world's seen. İPanzer 44, İM1A2, İF18 etc. They were bad, very very bad sims. Only Hind is a semi-original thing others are crap.

See you in next seance, flyboy.

I don't know Flanker but I have read many reviews (like the one in Gamespot about last version - Flanker 2.5 http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/flanker2 ... Btitle%3B1) and it seems good.

If anyone is interested I have discovered along the web some links in rapidshare to it.

As I said to Rastan Saga I propose Total Air War

Other suggestion?

EAW is highly atmospheric WW II sim, once I loved it.
Good for starters but not a detailed-realistic sim unlike Flanker.

One of the last Micro Prose action-sim until company closed. This is not a traditional heavy Micro Prose sim (M1 Tank Platoon, Gunship etc...) but if you like dogfight action you will like this.

Sound Fx and graphs are still good, very good.

Better than WW II: Fighters from Jane's but not graphics.

No need joystick, not bad with keyboard. it cant recognize my ancient joystick under XP like all other old sims.

What about LOMAC (Lock On - Modern Air combat)?

Someone considered it on par of Falcon 4.0 (for the precision of simulation of the aircraft modeled) while other considered it like an "action" game more than a true simulation...

Haven't played it, but this is from Flanker devs, so should be pretty close to reality.
