The Tainted

Post by LoatheMe »

the game installs and plays in XP when I set it to win98 compatibility, but I can't get setup.exe (the one to set the game's options, not the installation file) to work at all so I can't change the settings...which leaves me with no sound or music at all in the game. I can see it running in the background in processes in task manager, but no actual visible program ever appears.

is there any way to fix this or get around it outside of going through the hassle of setting up a virtual win 98 just to run the config?

The game should store it's settings somehow.

Do you have any files in the game directory of the type .ini ?
If you do, have a look at them in a text editor, maybe you can find the sound setting and enable it.

yeah there's a tainted.cfg but the only thing in it is one short line of random symbols.

I'm guessing there would normally be more in there if it had a chance to run the config program since I also found the patch and applied it hoping it would help, but it just makes things worse and stops the game from starting at all, giving an error saying it can't load the settings.

There would probably be not, it sounds like it is a binary file... There goes the chance to manually edit the settings. :(

I'm out of ideas, hopefully someone else knows how to fix this.

Use virtual machine or dual-boot with W98 to solve this by running the setup program on W98.
