Why, WHY DID THEY ever touch the franchise?

It wasn't terrible, I would recommend it for fans of the game series. It was probably made since it's a known franchise and which got cross-promotion from the last game released so for SyFy it's less risk to make than an unknown property. That's why games and movies have so many sequels and remakes.
Unfortunately, the franchise was canned after the movie and the last game didn't meet expectations I assume.
