Duke Nukem Forever, your opinions

Post by Sikk »

Thought about asking for everyone's opinion on DNF since I joined but kept forgetting. What did you guys think of it? While I was disappointed by Duke's latest game (seriously, 14 years to make that??? ), I did still find it very entertaining; the single player portion was alright, and the MP was lots better but the controls and the inventory system were obviously ripped off from CoD. I am glad though that the game finally came out (took "forever", heh heh); if it would have came out in 2006 like the final plan was, it would have been rated "AO" and banned.

God, there are still levels that look unpolished and unfinished, it's like someone published a beta to just get this the fudge over with. Keep that thing away from me.

It's basically a tired, crass mockery of what Duke Nukem 3D was all about. It's like they took the idea of Duke's persona (a sort of combination of different 80s action heroes) and took it to an extreme. The womanizing aspect became full-blown misogyny. The original lighthearted joking became literal shit-humor. It's like the developers were so concerned about being 'edgy' and 'extreme' for the mere sake of it that they made a complete mockery of the original game. Not to mention they destroyed the gameplay aspects of what made the original so great: No more intricate level designs that can be approached from different angles, no interesting destruction aspects, completely linear gameplay, the inability to have more than two weapons at a time-- and the graphics are completely missing any charm, opting instead for the 'jizz-all-over-everything' look of an over-reliance on normal maps.

It's just bad. Maybe if it came out in 2003 it'd have been rated higher, but even then it'd have been uninspired. It's just a terrible 'generic' shooter that apes every popular aspect of modern FPS games, and doesn't succeed in any of them.

The only redeeming quality for me were the bosses. In terms of the weapons, a patch was released to up the total you could carry to 4. That, being said I did try to play it again yesterday for the first time since its release and found it god awful. I also realized why I enjoyed it any then, I was probably stoned...Kids, don't do drugs! Drugs lead to bad decisions such as playing Duke Nukem Forever or watching The Human Centipede....As to whether it makes baby Jesus cry, I'm pretty sure it would make any baby cry; also, I don't believe in God so why would I believe in his son?

I have the urge to replay Duke Nukem 3D; luckily I still have my Atomic Edition CD around here somewhere; hmmm to download HRP or not to download HRP....Thats a real conundrum, a riddle, or puzzle you might say.
