Re: Spec ops 2 (getting it to work)
Hello Crop,
If you have a black screen, and nothing happens when you launch Spec Ops 2, opbravo.exe, this is due a bug in the .exe! The original Spec Ops 2, has beret.exe, this works flawless! Even under Win7, but upgrade to v1.2 with the 5 platinum level packs, you have a new .exe, opbravo.exe, and it will always fail to launch.
I've created my own Spec Ops 2 Platinum version which is able to launch all missions from the expansion (Operation Bravo aka Platinum), just by modifying locations.txt, that was all I needed to do! Now I can play all the expansion missions through beret2.exe which runs just fine.
Maybe the admins here would like me to upload this version, the Spec Ops 2 Platinum MYTH release is NOT proper! However, nobody seemed to have spotted their mistake. In their NFO they state this is the STANDALONE PLATINUM, which is indeed correct, however, they also state the original missions are playable, this is incorrect. The "SO Menu.dll" file is missing from this release, and only the platinum levels are playable. My version has a larger mission screen, including both the original AND expansion missions.
It's not nice from them to rip on CLASS though I understand their point a little.

Spec Ops II Platinum is essentially just the update patch to v1.2 plus
new levels. Because the 'rip' of SOII (11/09/99 Spec_Ops_II-CLS) was
completely <i>fudge</i> up (they forget to even include the Voodoo textures)
and has never been fixed, we decided it would be better to release this
game in a completely playable, proper rip. It includes the original SOII
as well as all new elements from the Platinum edition.
BTW, Platinum-edition addon-files are also freely available for download
on the web, but not applicable on the CLS 'rip' - and the downloadable
addon-files are almost as big as this full standalone version.
Game Notes:
~~~~~~~~~~
Spec Ops 2 is the sequel to the genre-busting Spec Ops and the multiplayer
add-on pack Spec Ops: Ranger Team Bravo.
Rather than just the stereotypical killing aliens/monsters from another
dimension/planet/gate of hell, Spec Ops set itself apart from the rest of
the shooter genre by incorporating real world military combat, in actual
hot-spot, real world locations, with the actual weapons and tactics used
by the US armed services.
Features:
~~~~~~~~
- Created with the US Army's first Special Forces Group.
- LAN and Internet Multiplay.
- Higher res. poloygon models for extreme realism.
- More buddies and smarter buddy AI.
- 19 actual weapons including the prototype OICW shoulder rifle.
- Multi-storied interior and vast exterior spaces.
- Drop, pick-up, and trade inventory items.
- D3D and GLIDE support.
The Spec Ops 2 Platinum expansion (Operation Bravo) contains:
- 25 new levels (in Urban, Desert, Mountain, Alpine, Jungle environments)
- new multi-person game modes
- enhanced AI
- better graphics

1. Unzip.
2. Unace (either manually or with our Installer).
3. Run Setup.bat to decompress sfx + gfx.
4. If you have a Voodoo-GFX-card, run Voodoo.bat.
If you have NO Voodoo-card but a D3D-compatible card, run D3D.bat.
This copies the needed executable to Opbravo.exe.
5. Start single player game with Opbravo.exe.
Start multiplayer LAN games with Langame.bat
Start multiplayer online games through Lobby.exe.
Note: like for most new games (examples: Shogun and Vampire), it is
REQUIRED that you have the latest DXMedia installed. Find it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp
Install both - DXMedia6 and the latest patch for it.

A few notes about this version:
* run setup.bat, it's repacked with a ogg decoder
* NOT actually v1.2 but the entire game nevertheless! (includes 1.2 d3d base and textures though)
* LaserLok protection is now LoserLok

* Exe is original (SO Menu.dll had the LaserLok)
* Start a new game, all levelpacks are available
* Bugs: due using the original exe, the way the bravo missions are added results in less mission info and no screens in the menu, this might be fixed if anyone really cares.
* Modified locations.txt to merge the expansion with the original so beret.exe could load it:
Code: Select all
;This is the give text for the missions by location and is parsed into the menu

* Without 3DSL I would never be able to play Spec Ops 2, I have it a couple of times original but the broken MYTH version inspired me to make this one.
* Tested, works on Win7! (probably not 8, try WineD3D for d3d to GL)
Enjoy it! I am happy to play those good old levelpacks again after a few days of figuring out howto get it work all proper.
Cheers,
UberLamer

Re: Spec ops 2 (getting it to work)
Actually, yes! A mate told me about the greatness of Spec Ops: The Line and I remembered playing SpecOps2 back in the day. I've had a lot of fun with SpecOps2, the ability to pickup enemy weapons is so great and it just throws you into a level with not much help, you really have to read mission information. Though the controls are a little bit iffy, it plays like a tactical shooter so you don't run and gun, in that perspective the controls are fine.hfric wrote:let me guess Spec Ops : The line brought you here
