Is there anyone out there who can help me run the demo of Aone in the Dark 3?

It was uploaded onto archive.org.
https://archive.org/details/aitd3demo

I have mounted the CD folder and installed it, but still it wont run. :(
I am planning to do a lets play of this demo and upload it, but first have to get it to run.

Hey Mark,

So let me get this straight:

1. you managed to install the demo in Dosbox
2. the game doesn't run

Does the game return an error message'?

With kind regards,

Build aitd3.iso of cd files. I used imgburn.

Code: Select all

indark3
indark3\..
instaid3.exe
install.exe
winstall.exe
Then in dosbox:
imgmount d c:\dosbox\aitd3.iso -t iso

Run d:\instaid3
Run demo
Okay!

edit:
Game checks mscdex.exe ==> fake / real cd drive

Dosbox folder mount = fake cd drive = fail
Dosbox img mount = real cd drive = good

Hey thanks for your quick response!

I have managed to get it to run, but I do not hear any voices (or see any text) in the opening sequence. Perhaps they left it out in the demo or my soundcard isn't working properly. Can you please verify this please?

There are voices later on in the animation sequences, using the token in the piano.

there is also no music, in the install menu, under hardware opt., the FM card is greyed out.

Demo plays cd audio tracks. You can use retail cd and get audio that way. Unsure if original demo cd had audio tracks. Didn't get any text either.

note: gog aitd3 has 2 versions - older = bin/cue music, newer = compressed ogg

This I'm not sure about. CD versions of aitd1, aitd2 don't come with FM iirc. Maybe same with aitd3 - can't get any adlib to detect.

thanks. I did try the retail CD in CD drive option and funny enough, it does give music! And a different score during the opening sequence as starting from the retail folder, which can explain the absence of the voice over.

Will make the demo video tomorrow and upload it, but what we really need is the original Demo CD of Alone in the Dark 3 to be 100% sure.

interesting! The demo says "I-Motion" instead of "Infogrames" at the beginning, I've noticed this difference between the floppy disk version of AITD and the CDROM version of AITD, now here as well! I though I-Motion was part of Infogrames at this point in time, perhaps I was wrong!

I'm going to look the rest of the video now, thanks!
