Grackon's Curse (no CD in CD drive error)

Post by Ggoran »

Persistently playing "ancient games" I experience one frustration after another,
and in this case I can't start the game because CD is not recognized by any system,or
any emulator, and any drive letter ?! Even with daemon tools inside Win98 still its not
recognized ?! (for the first time I experience that nothing i can do to "force" game to
recognize CD drive).(I tryied MAC emulator to run game, but simply i'm too dull to
figure out how it runs even with tutorials).

EMULATORS : Dosbox-x,PCEM,Vmware workstation
SYSTEMS : Win3.1 ...Win95...Win98
DRIVE LETTER d: e: and whatever :
SOURCE : "My abandoware -RIP" ,and Legends ISO

This is the error from "Director Player 4.0" :
"The CD is not in the CD ROM drive"

Please help!

Eighter with solution or perhaps some MAGICAL link with (already configured) Basilisk II or Sheepshaver.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Have you tried it in XP?

I tried it with otdvm, but couldnt get past a quicktime error.

Otdvm is a great utility that I didn't even know existed (thanks for this new and valuable discovery!)
With it i succeeded to install the game in Win7 and 10 (quicktime also),but with the same "No cd" error
after i tryied to start.

Otdvm don't work in XP,but i also managed to install the game, and quicktime using compatibility mode in both
cases, but yet....guess what error occured when i tried to start the game :x

Anyway I'm beginning to suspect that either the image is flawed or that the game requires some hacking\tweaking to run,
but this second option is more logical. In dos i remember "Fake CD" utility, but for Windows i never find similar.

Thanks for your effort, and for OTDVM !!!

K ... easy ,
You just have to double the data , since win3.11 logic was broken at times ... first decompress the CD into a folder called Data , and then place the CD.iso near dosbox-x.exe

Copy those lines into dosbox-x.conf at the end :

Code: Select all

imgmount e: "CD.iso" -t iso -fs iso -ide 2m
mount C C
mount D .\data\ -t cdrom -1024
C:
cls
CALL WINDOWS.BAT
Go into Windows Settings in the MAIN folder , to set GPu at 800x600 256 C LF ... ignore restart ,
In the Main Folder go into File Manager , from there go into D: drive and install the game ... TWICE , since QT is QT ... and then just Run the GRACKON for the game , DEMO to see all theirs 4 games and play them , Question to see how install the game ...
(game reads data from E: but needs some from D: ... WELCOME TO WINDOWS 3.11 fracking file system)

Works ...

:| or be frcking lazy an get this ... with a thing that will help you get Win3.11 games in the future to run ... the whole game made into a one exe , just press dosbox ... if you want window mode copy paste the config from the window mode ... decompresses into a 1 gig thing

Gee man :o !!! Am i lucky or what ?! :thanks:

This is what i call REAL manually tweaking, and probably permanent solution for
all future similar shts (and I am sure there will be a lot more of them).I'll save this excellent
config in dir "PERMANENT SOLUTIONS" (along with few more dos tweakings and infos i got
from you). Not even to mention how grateful I am to you for uploading "lazy mode" for all of us
"dos scientists"

Thanks a lot for all these truly awesome things!

And today i finished this "bull-hit" in 2-3 hours, but with step by step walkthrough (game really
don't deserve more time...yet it was interesting to watch how something can be sooo shamefully bad)...
or to say : one "dis-game" less to solve,so it was worth it!

Your emulation works perfectly from the start to the near end when it was "quick time-boss fight"
But when i re-install quicktime everything finished smooth, and Grackon was dead as a doo doo (even he
looks like one)

Thanks again for this great help to overpass this obstacle!

Appreciate if the poster above would be willing to test it, a bit pointless now but still..

 ... there is also that way ... to be honest i could do the same and debug the file , but did not knew if it was Director Player 4.0 thing that should not be touched since then you loose QT compatibility ... QT games are weird , the more early it is the more QT triggers it had ... yeah , triggers that broke the game ... this way you run the game in 1:1 form , and it behaves like it would have been working from a original medium ...

the hoops i had to go though to make "The Madness of Roland" boot , would Spoony go bald ...
