Update:
Whenever you access the control setup option in the menu, controls get screwed.
Just dont do that and the game should be playable to completion, so there is something wrong with the NOCD indeed.
Update2:
This may be something:
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Turok:_Evolution
Install Microsoft DirectInput Mapper to fix remapping issues on Windows Vista and later.
That will bring up the menu at the very least, it wouldnt at all without that fix.

I'm now able to access/exit that menu ingame without it screwing up the controls.
I have played the game up to this now https://youtu.be/b7UX9vLaqD4?t=2155 and havent experienced any corrupt savefiles yet.
It now works on my machine™
That default menu looks like something used even on games released on Windows 98 btw, that may explain some of the issues. Old even for Windows XP.

Re: Turok Evolution save corruption and controls
@sparklot, sorry for asking, but is there a chance for your hacker friend to be inquired into reversing non-KiDDiE content (like this SecuROM'd title for example, due to its flawed crk as discussed here)
in advance for the response

Re: Turok Evolution save corruption and controls
Hacker can handle Securom 4 (if working cd supplied) but many non-kiddie stuff is Securom 7.x and that I'm told is above her skill level.
She has read some documents about it though and there's two Disney Princess 7.x games that she'd like to unwrap first, not counting the Disney Epic Mickey 2 non-steam game.
oldgames.ru has a Securom and Starforce hacker though. I've heard that scene hackers used automated tools to neuter all the anti-* crap so maybe the Turok devs added their own custom triggers (like Gta IV or such).
