Brain teaser puzzle....

It's called Petals Around The Rose and the only clues are that the name has something to do with how to solve it and for every 5-dice roll the number of petals around the rose is either zero or an even number.

You have to figure out the pattern and what the answer is for each roll. Some people find the answer right away while others work on it for months without finding it.
Supposedly, more intelligent people can have more problems with it by overthinking it. That must mean why I haven't gotten it yet.
There's a story of Bill Gates in his college days having more problems with it than others in his group -

I've tried and tried... But I don't know. =( I think I'm missing something here.. Maybe I'm taking this from a wrong angle, but I have no clue what else to do.. Can someone point me in the right direction? I'm getting pretty cranky.
