Johnny Mnemonic install on win7/xp

Post by oldman »

After a bit of difficulty,I've finished downloading Johnny Mnemonic
I get the feeling from what i've read so far ,that i might not be able to run this anyway :cry:
I have win7 and winxp (and linux) running at the mo.
Is it going be possible to get this going on a modern system?
I did a quick install on Win7 and it freaked and crashed at the quicktime part of the install.
Though the game install seems to be just the exe file, put into a folder in the c drive.,with the rest staying on cd.

I do have some old computers with win95 ,98 and win3.1.,but they're stored away.

P.S.. i've searched here ,but only found ref. to downloading the game.

Is vogons the best place for this particular game prob.?

You can try this dosbox configuration that Molitor made awhile back for Crusaders: Adventure Out of Time. Its got Windows3.1 installed on it. I did a bit of finagling with it to get a cdrom driver installed. Of course you might have to do more finagling to get Johnny Mnemonic to work but it's worth a shot. No password on the archive and it's only about 10 MB.

Code: Select all

Thanks guys.
I've heard about running old win 3.1 in dosbox before.
Though don't know much about it.
It's pretty incredible really,it shows how much computers have advanced since those days of Work for windows :)
The original windows had such small requirements.

Thanks for the link,Meddle.

P.S..I really like this forum,there's always someone willing to share any tips or info.

I managed to get it to work by changing one word in dosbox.conf from,
imgmount D nuovo.cue -t iso
to
imgmount D DRZ-JNM1.cue -t iso

I put the bin +cue in "discs" folder of win31.
Before hand i ran the quicktime install from inside dosbox .
The game loads and an options screen pops up where u can change your keyboard controls and choose bigger screen.
I am surprised it was so easy :D

So all thanks to Meddle AND Molitor ! ,for that brilliant little RAR file. :thanks:

EDIT UPDATE::::::
BAD NEWS!
I started the game as i said before ,and after adjusting my game settings in options box that pops up.
I clicked on "NEW" to start the game and a girl on the screen says "Please insert other disc"
So i went to dosbox.conf and changed it to the name of disc 2 and restarted the game.
The girl says again"please insert other disc",the same thing as with disc 1.
So is there a solution to this?
It did seem to work a bit too easy at the beginning!

=================================================================
good news update :
update::
Using Poweriso i copyed the large file file from cd2 ,"MNEMONIC.CIN" into cd1 ,and made sure dosbox.cong refers to cd1 and now the game seems to start and run ok!

The disc2 has two MNEMONIC.CIN files?!!
I don't know how that possible,but obviously i couldn't copy both,so i took the large one and out that into cd1.
Whether not having that second MNEMONIC.CIN file will affect things,time will tell,i suppose!

Things were so much easier back in those Win 3.1 days :D

This Win3.1 DOSBOX progie is universal, meaning you can place any disc image in the Discs folder as long as you edit the conf file. You can even put the game in the start folder so it automatically opens after launching the OS. Soon I will make a script to automatize everything incl. installation if possible.

I think you can play it in Windows XP if you install older quicktime, which comes with the game.

In case the .cin file(s) is causing problem, just mount the two discs on the same drive and swap between them:

Code: Select all

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
@echo off
mount C .
C:
cd Discs
imgmount D DRZ-JNM1.cue DRZ-JNM2.cue -t iso
cd ..
cd WINDOWS
win
exit
The first disk is mounted by default. When the game asks for the second CD, press Ctrl+F4 to swap to the next CD.
If it asks again for CD1, press Ctrl+F4, wait a few seconds, then accept. And so on...

I made the installation from floppies and only installed the bare Windows without the accessories and media, but if a game requires a runtime from Windows it probably has it included on the disc.
But... Isn't Fade to Black a DOS-only game ?

N.B Some people at Vogons succeeded to install a shrinked/ripped Win95 into Dosbox, and I'm trying the same thing but it's much more unstable than Win31.
