I second the Dark Eye. It features the voice of William Burroughs, the writer of Naked Lunch.
You'll probably need Microsoft Virtual PC to play it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Alas I've got / played most of them. I think I shall go and dig around on jayisgames and mobygames for those odd little indie numbers to play over Xmas

I like surreal adventures as well, hopefully we'll get genre index for adventures eventually so people can get an all-encompassing list of different types like surreal.

Re: Surreal/ arty / existential adventure games recommendati
There is a recent upload on Adventure Legends called Surrealidade. I have been playing it even though I don't know the Portugese language. It features a library in it that's filled with Artist pinturas (galleries) of many surreal artists in history, such as Salvador Dali and many many others (including the artwork and bibliographies of their careers!). You can lose yourself in these obscure pieces or play the adventure game which is quite difficult to figure out. It's exactly what you are asking for. Also, try playing Morpheus, there are many different surreal realms to explore and some great puzzles that aren't to hard to figure out.
Good luck!

Thanks for the tip about surrealidade - am just downloading it to check it out
Have played Morpheus - that's an old but great surreal adventure! Maybe we should start a surreal adventures list? A Google search for A list of surreal adventure games doesn't turn up much of any use on the first two pages...

Melissa (currently playing Papo and Yo)

Don't forget to check out VOID. It's in English with Japanese subtitles and it's exactly the kind of surrealism you are looking for. I completed it and made a walkthrough of it, if you get stuck. The game's not available anywhere but here on Adventure Legends. Check it out! I loved every minute of it.
BTW - I couldn't get Papo and Yo to work on my system. I'm running on Windows 8.1
P.S. VOID will only run with Japanese language enabled (east Asian pack) and I ran it under Windows XP.
(currently playing AGON Mysterious Codex - am stuck on the first chess-like board game)

And yet another one, weird as they can get.
Re: Surreal/ arty / existential adventure games recommendati
Hi there,
Thanks for the tips!
I have played VOID and I have to admit I abandoned it fairly early on. I remember I seemed to be running down a long walk way and I wasn't really sure what i was doing and it seemed a bit complex with all different colours to collect. Anyway I got bored of it but I probably should have persevered...
Eastern Mind I have in my collection but I'm not sure I have ever played it so will give it a go.
If you guy haven't checked out Kairo you should. Its by the same guy who did The White Chamber (available here on AL) . Kairo is very different from The White Chamber but i really enjoyed playing it and certainly shows that you don't need fancy graphics to make a really enjoyable weird adventure.

Another good one from last year which is fairly dark / weird was The Cat Lady - it has a clumsy interface but once you get used to it I found the story was really good.
As for Windows 8 .... well, dont get me started... I'm in IT and I can't stand it as an OS. I think Microsoft thought they were being clever by killing two birds with one stone but FAILED. The amount of people who ask me to downgrade their shiny new Windows 8 laptop to Windows 7 ! Windows 8 works well on tablets but I really don't think it's that good for non touch screen laptops. Failing that I tell people how to get the third party hacks that will install a decent start button and allow you to go straight to desktop and skip Metro.
