I saw documentary yesterday called Fog Of War which was interview with McNamara, the U.S. Defense Secretary during Vietnam War.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fog_of_War
He admits to meeting Vietnam leaders many years after war ended and he was told by them angrily that they were not pro-communist and that they were in fact fighting for independence from Chinese influence which they had been for centuries before.....and that no matter who came into Vietnam, they would fight with their last breath against them.
Also, the reason for the U.S. bombing them had been a second attack by Vietnam on their ships when in fact it was later found that the sonar report was false on that second incident (though first one was true).
Anyhow, the U.S. has supported many dictators only because they were fighting communists when in fact they were much worse and caused more misery for those country's people (see Chile, El Salvador, etc.)

The Vietnam war was wrong but the reasons for the US involvement were many and varied. The gulf of Tonkin treaty with the French was the basis of the Vietnam Police Action as it was called back then. We had agreed to backstop the French in Vietnam. They lost and we (foolishly) took over. America's leaders were arrogant and truly believed that a people that had been fighting for hundreds of years against various different opressors could be beaten. They were wrong. J.F.K. 's adimnistration began it. L.B. J.'s administration escalated it and Nixon only made matters worse after campaigning on a platform of ending the war. He was the first Republican to run for office while saying one thing and doing axactly the opposite. Rather like Bush in that respect. I can't detail every aspect of the Vietnam war. It would take days and I would have to write a book to do so but I hope this helps you a little.
